great place to stay . its the first time i have been to a backpackers and i was very surprised ,
Nomads Serpent in Cairns was a good base to explore Cairns and a safe place to stay .
it has lots of activities planned each day, and also has good food , good bar , extra large pool , vollyball , and it has a free shuttle bus with the best bus driver HI LANCE, the bus goes in and out of Cairns City every hour .The staff are good and helpful and nothing seemed to be a trouble to them . THANK YOU to the staff and a BIG THANK YOU TO LANCE i miss you . You made our holiday lots of fun.SEE YOU NEXT TIME.

After backpacking our way around Australia for the past 2 years, my friends and I have stayed in some pretty dodgy hostels, but this was the biggest disappointment. We arrived in Cairns on the Greyhound bus, and there was nobody to meet us (not that we EXPECTED it, but most hostels on the East Coast do this). We talked to a girl representing another hostel and she kindly showed us the way to the esplanade and pointed us in the direction of Nomads Cairns (where we thought we were staying, as it said this on our ticket!). The guy on reception said we weren't booked in, and that we were at Nomads Serpent. So he called them up and they said they would come down and pick us up in their courtesy bus. We waited 1 hour at the side of the road, to find out it was only a 5min drive away..!

When we got there the staff were too busy talking to their friends and drinking slush puppies to check us in. When we finally got the rude French girls attention, she was very brash, didn't explain where anything was, did not inform us that there was a free breakfast, cheap meal deals, wednesday parties etc (which we later found out from the other Nomads hostel). When we asked where our room was she talked to us like we were stupid, told us "up the stairs you cant miss it" and quickly got back to chatting to her friends. When we got to our room, the key card didnt work, again another battle to peel the staff's attention away from their friends.

We stayed here 2 nights (only because it was in our east coast package). Staff were continually rude and unhelpful. The announcements over the speakers in the rooms feel very invasive and pushy. The wednesday party night was a nightmare, we decided not to go on it, as our tour picked us up very early the next morning, drunken screaming crying singing French and German girls kept us up all night.

Free breakfast is ok if you dont eat too much. "Free dinner when you buy a drink"" is an absolute joke!! A tablespoon of rice with a tablespoon of revolting curry. Courtesy bus was very unreliable and AT LEAST 15mins late everytime.

If you're desperate for somewhere to stay, fine, it's a clean bed in a nice enough room and clean bathrooms. But you might as well stay somewhere better! You're spoiled for choice in Cairns, so many awesome hostels nearer the city, at a better price, and with LOVELY staff!!

Stayed there for more than a week and have nothing to complain about. The rooms were always clean, so were the bathrooms. The staff was nice, a bit confused sometimes tho, 'cause some of them are interns :) What I really loved was the Courtesy Bus that took you to the city every hour till 3am and picked you up as well. In the morning, you got some free breakfast as well. Highly recommend it!

This hostel, well our room in particular had a weird smell - like the bottom of a pond? Or something - it was horrible. The pillows were yellow when you took the sheets off - nice! But they did give you free meals every night which weren't too bad and the communal area was quite nice. They also turned the music off at around 11pm so you could sleep if you wanted to. You could walk into the centre of Cairns if you wanted to but they did offer a shuttle bus. Basically though the bus was a small van that could only fit around 10 people. It was also an old van and not a very comfortable ride. When it came to pick us up everyone pushed in to get on it and it wasn't a very nice experience. I actually preferred to walk as it was along by the sea and not have to argue with people who pushed in. The staff were nice and friendly though throughout our stay.

This is a poor excuse of a hostel-the rooms are filthy and there is an awful smell in them that can only be discribed as wet soil,
Our mattresses were stained-we were covered in bedbug bites and the rooms were boiling-you had to ask if you could have the air-con on as it was switched off in the morning.
There was the usual ex-backpackers working at the hostel -some were ok but others just made a nuisance of themselves-getting drunk and behaving like they owned the place.
The kitchen was a disgrace, the only redeeming thing being the free meals in the evening which were just passable but very small.
The minibus was not roadworthy and driven very badly by the staff-but they do provide airport pickup and lifts into Cairns.

I had a great time at Serpents. Staff are so helpful and actually help in getting a good deal on activity packages. Staff are helpful and never had a negative response for me.

Its nice to chill, lots of space to hang out, be alone or mingle. You are out of town, which I liked and a free shuttle runs every hour to town. Great facilities!!!

I would reccommend this hostel.
