This is a really great Hostel. It is family owned and run. The owners are very nice. The first night I was at Tropic Days there was a BBQ with Emu, Kangaroo, and Croc. The owner shared his story with us and made everyone feel at home. It is quiet and beautifully decorated. It is more like a home that a hostel. We stayed in the camp ground. It was a great value and had free Internet.

Room Tip: I stayed in the camp ground, it was really inexpensive.

Yes, the other reviewers are correct - ambience, staff, weekly barbecue
and shuttle, all great. The front office staff, especially Lara, really outdo themselves in trying to match and then book the best tour to suit. We had a charming tropic room and shared a bath & kitchen with just one other room - mind you the price was $75- but it was equipped with a personal fridge and 4-speed ceiling - no need for a/c. Would recommend and would stay again.

Me and my mate were camping up the coast and Cairns was our last destination before leaving Oz. We were just going to stay a couple nights, we stayed 2 weeks! The atmosphere, staff and organization of the hostel is off the charts awesome. Best hostel in Australia!

Was there for 1 night before going on a diving trip. Great hostel, nice backyard and efficient management. Rooms were clean, as well as the bathrooms. I had taken the towel with me on the diving trip , and they charged the credit card. When I came back I gave them the towel and they paid me back my deposit, honesty is good in the backpacking/hostel world. A bit far out of town, but would recommend staying there.

Overall we enjoyed our 2 week stay here, it was a great place to relax before the next leg of our trip. We camped and although the areas a little cramped its fine for that. The facilities were great - free Wifi, well equipped kitchens, great bathrooms. The staff for the most part were really good, very personal and fun (especially Tom and Helen). And its really not that far to walk to town (20mins), or they have the free shuttle. In general it had a nice atmosphere.

In fact the only thing which really let our stay here down was two encounters with the owners. Firstly we found that a mouse had been in our food and thought we better inform the owners, in case they were unaware rather than as a complaint. They were aware it seems, suggesting that "if I were a mouse, I'd come in here to eat". Secondly we made a suggestion to one of the staff to get a fly zapper for one of the kitchens which was constantly crawling with them (the bins are kept just outside). Apparently we weren't the only ones to make this suggestion. We heard the owner's reaction which was "No, I've never done that, tell them to live in nature"

We're not precious and thought we were contributing to an already excellent place but did find the lackluster customer service from the owners pretty off putting. Would still recommend a stay here, good place to relax and meet people.

Hi Guys,

Thank you so much for your review, and thank you for reccomending us to other readers, I would like to respond to the comments regarding the Fly trap and Mouse situation. Firstly I do welcome all suggestion that come to us to help improve our Hostel, I did notice the increase in Flies over the Days you were with us, but this is a common occurance at the start of the warmer weather, things are back to nomal and the flies are gone...and Kathy's response to the mouse was a light hearted comment about how some people like to leave out biscuits, chocolate. We do have a regular health inspector from the Cairns city council and always Pass their inspections. Please know that we are always trying to better our Hostels and look forward to seeing you again.

We opted for Tropic Days for our trip to Cairns after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor - and we weren't disappointed!
It may not be the cheapest option available but Gabe and Cathy, the owners, as well as the rest of the staff go out of their way to make sure your time in Cairns is perfect and personalised.
We especially appreciated the free pick ups and shuttle to town, excellent tour advice, the fact the dorms were only 3 or 4 beds and the general atmosphere of the hostel.
The bbq on Monday night is definitely not to be missed - great value and very good fun.
Thank you Tropic Days!
