Owner description: Kuranda Scenic Railway is the original scenic rail journey to Kuranda. This spectacular experience travels over bridges and through tunnels hand-made by North Queensland's pioneers over 100 years ago. Traversing the World Heritage listed rainforest of the Barron Gorge National Park, this is one of the world's great railway journeys.

“Even the teen liked it”

On telling our 16 yr old that we were taking an old train up a mountain to a market town then a gondola back down it didn't meet with a great deal of enthusiasm. Imagine our suprise on our return when she Facebook'd all her friends and said what a great day she'd had!

“Historic Train experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 September 2014

It was lovely to travel on the old train and learn about the history of the line being built from Cairns to Kuranda. Construction commenced in 1882. Freshwater station where we caught the train is done up very beautifully and has a café and gift shop and museum. Some very beautiful scenery along the way through the Macalister Range.
Once in Kuranda there are other experiences available. Wildlife, Dreamtime, Rainforest. and shopping in Kuranda itself.

“Relaxing with scenery”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 September 2014

We went up by Skyrail and returned on the train. The old ticket office and station set the scene for the journey which is a one and half hour ride. The two ladies in the refreshments area on the platform where so friendly. We opted for the gold class it's well worth the extra. The views are all from the left hand side. The seats are comfy and only two abreast so the views are fabulous and easy for taking photos. You get drinks & nibbles on the way down. There's also a commentary and one stop for photos along the way. There are two gold class carriages situated in the middle of the train which seemed to be the best place for the scenery. The other carriages had hard wooden long seats not sure what sort of view you would get from them. Great pictures on the way down plus at a couple of bends you get to see the front and rear of the train. Fabulous old train great way to end a day.

“Great Scenic Trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 September 2014

We booked this trip just 45 minutes before it began and were very pleased we did. We road the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway up to Kuranda and enjoy the views of the valley below and the waterfall near the end of the line. Kuranda itself is a tourist town filled with cafes, tourist shops, a few tourist things to do. After lunch and walking the small town, we took the gondola back down to Cairns. The gondola rides above the rainforest and has 2 stops on your way down. The best view is as you come over the ridge and see the sea. Well worth the day trip.

“Train up Skyrail down”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 September 2014

We were staying next to the railway station so we took the train up - a chug along diesel loco with quaint carriages - Tip - seats are numbered ask for a window when you book - . Karunda Village was disappointing shops, shops, shops - mostly clothing, curios and food - there is a pie shop towards the end - I cannot recall the name but my beef, bacon and cheese was the best in Australia and yes I have eaten a Yatla pie! - there were added pay for attractions but not that exciting - the Skyrail down if you have a forward facing seat was exceptional with pleasant stops to get off and wander through the rain forest - we took a diamond upgrade - fewer cabins with glass floors - and shorter queues, we were lucky to get ones to ourselves - an efficient transfer took us back to our apartment - a great day but time at the top can be limited.
