“Overpriced - poor value”
Reviewed 2 September 2013

Very disappointed with our night out at Iyara by Sakare, the menu was small and very pricey and there was no atmosphere. The staff were polite and friendly but over-attentive so that we felt constantly interrupted and a little uncomfortable. It's a pleasant restaurant to look at and has a great location with a view over the Esplanade but the meals were very disappointing. Massaman Curry was small, majority potato and poor quality, my partner couldn't finish it. Stir-fried duck was fine but nothing special. Starter prawns in sweet chilli sauce were very mediocre, sauce did not taste home made. We were advised to get rice at extra cost but neither dish needed it. We've had better Thai meals in Cairns for half the price and a much more relaxed dining experience. A shame, we'd hoped for much better given the look and the price. Won't be going back.

“Dining at Iyara - a word of caution”
Reviewed 18 August 2013

Iyara Contemporary Thai restaurant is located in a most beautiful place; and the view is excellent. These are about the only good things one can say about this restaurant. The food too salty. The staff unhelpful and unfriendly. There are no deserts on the menu.

“Misses the Mark”
Reviewed 3 August 2013

Went here after a friend raved about it for a week.

The table wasn’t set properly when we got there. I didn’t have a fork or napkin and didn’t get one until I asked twice (after I had eaten my entree).

Drink orders took a while to be taken. Cocktails were good- very old fashioned choices. Had to ask for a beer menu.

For entrée we ordered the oysters spiced up and the penag’s. For mains we ordered the whole barra and the pork hock with a side of rice.

The penags were good- lots of coconut and peanuts. A bit dry. Nothing you couldn’t replicate yourself at home. The oysters were good too.

Getting another drink was a bit of an issue- with the wait staff seeming to disappear.

The mains looked good. The barra was filleted and deep fried with a fillets chopped and placed around the plate with fried thai basil and a chilli jam. The pork hock was small. Way too small for what we paid (almost $30) and looked more rustic than modern. The flavours of the barra were bland. Having been fried- the thai basil had lost all taste. So it ended up being tasteless deep fried fish smothered in chilli jam (which wasn’t spicy in the least bit). The hock tasted more of pork belly. The flavours were a bit more enticing- lots of fresh herbs and a bit of a kick to it.

All up we ended up paying $160 for 2 people for entrees, mains and drinks. At this price you’d expect perfection- flavours hard to beat and great customer service. This was not the case. We ended up with easy to recreate dishes, only a hint of that spice you want in a Thai meal and poor customer service.

“Great food, great views.”
Reviewed 22 July 2013

Food was excellent (recommend the soft-shelled crab), service was good, and the atmosphere from the balcony overlooking the beach was perfect (and a relief to be away from the hustle below). Only minor gripe would be that the serving sizes could be a little larger given the price.

“Fawlty Towers?”
Reviewed 18 July 2013

As previously frequent visitors to Cairns, and now residents of this fantastic part of the world, we have tried most restaurants in the city, but not this one. The level of service in Cairns is usually of a friendly, efficient standard, so when the Thai girl standing at the foot of the restaurant stairs told us it was the best Thai in Cairns, how could we resist? Unfortunately, we never got to find out, as we waited for almost an hour for our order of two stir fried dishes and a bowl of rice to never arrive. The place was not busy that night with perhaps 20-30 at most diners. Another couple arrived about 30 minutes after we did, and had their meals delivered in about 15-20 minutes. Just prior to this I had enquired as to how much longer our meals might be, could we get another round of drinks. The English waitress went off to "find out" and never came back, either with an answer, or our drinks. When confronted about this, she denied ever speaking to us. I spoke to the barman and he had not received the order for our drinks. Another waitress mumbled something about our docket being “lost”, fairly impossible with a point of sale system? Needless to say, I doubt that we will ever bother to return.
