“Adequate rooms, nice surrounds, ridiculous amount of noise!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2014

Just returned from 7 nights in beautiful Cairns staying at the Southern Cross Atrium Apartments. Found the rooms (we stayed in a one bedroom superior) to be great- well equipped kitchen, loved the open out balcony, great air con and ceiling fans, nice big shower, clean and fresh feeling linen, swivel TV is a great idea so you can watch in bed rather than in the living area. It was a shame that our view from the balcony was a carpark, pictures are a little deceiving in making you think you will be looking out over one of the lovely pools. The 3 pools were really nice and each a little different to the other. Not a lot of sun gets to the pool areas, but I'm sure in the warmer months the shade would be welcome. We made use of the free bbqs which were clean and really good- easy to buy supplies from the Coles which is just on the next block. The palms and greenery around the property and pools gives the place a nice tropical feel too.
Unfortunately, the thing that ruined our stay was the ridiculous amount of noise made by the staff every morning before 7 am!!! I am not a light sleeper nor am I fussy about a bit of noise, but the cleaning staff whose storage area was below our room practically yelled rather than spoke to each other. There was lots of banging and loud wheeling of noisy trolleys every day of our stay before 7am. Even when I was awake before the cleaners started, it was still annoying and I thought fairly inconsiderate. I'm not sure whether you would get all that noise if you were in the blocks by the pool, but block 10 I would avoid at all costs. I have read other reviews about the noise of the trains, and that didn't bother us at all. We had a faulty smoke alarm in our room that went off twice (once at 6.30am) but that wasn't as frustrating as the cleaning staff and their daily racket! Management saw to the smoke alarm issue and had it fixed promptly.
In summary, I would stay again but definitely not in the blocks that overlook the car parks or especially in the same block as the cleaners office!!

Room Tip: Block 10 where the cleaners are based is very noisy at all hours!!! Ask for poolside view.

We stayed for 4 days here after having stayed 4 days in Port Douglas. No one was helpful or nice to deal with. We were paying $35 for internet, when I asked for help with it they said it was just our room, so why let us get it. There is no lift and the stairs were hard with suitcases etc.... There's no view. The cane furniture was very uncomfortable. Needless to say we won't be going back there.

I accidently booked this accommodation online. Big mistake. Apartment cost $165 per night, and was not as good as other apartments I have stayed in for about $135 per night. There was no separate bedroom and loung room, the airconditioner was very noisy, and the hot water system gurgled and banged all night. Tea and coffe is only provided for first night and room serviced only if staying for 7 nights.
Proximity to Cairns Central and restaurants is the only plus.
Better value elsewhere. This has taught me a lesson to be more careful when booking online.

The ladies at breakfast were very kind! Had to go up three flights of stairs with two large suitcases, but I guess that's my fault for packing so heavily! Ha! Great rooms and great tropical vibe. Also fantastic pools and BBQ areas!

The apartment we stayed at for 4 days was in itself excellent, but during our time the staff never checked our room for towels, bathroom needs etc and this was disappointing. Also the block we were staying in was the hub for all linen, towels and waste and the large vehicles entered the area in front of us and many other apartments at around 0600 making a great deal of noise and waking us all up. Must admit would not return here as there were better apartments in Cairns

We chose to stay in a 2 bedroom apartment wanting a little time out from our 12 year old. The rooms were beyond what I expected. Modern, clean, great location and though pools were quite cool we still had a swim in all 3.

The office staff seemed disinterested and when more than one was present almost felt tense. Basic information was asked about buses to get to esplanade/wharf which could be caught around the corner but no staff bothered to inform us and for first few days we walked but exhausted our child. I found out information myself and we booked all our own tours.

Exceptionally close to cinema, shopping and only a $6 taxi ride from lagoon/esplanade.

We would stay here again but were disappointed we were not told upon booking cafe/bar was closed

The apartments were clean, and there was a nice pool layout. The location was good being a shortish walk from the CBD, and right next door to a large shopping mall with a supermarket at the apartments end of it.

The apartment had only a microwave in it,and I was convinced I'd read that they were combi ovens so I was a little disappointed with that (no pizza on the menu whilst staying here!). However, the kettle toaster, hob and barbecues (outside) were adequate.

The front desk staff were at best variable. One lady (English) wasn't great the first time we spoke to her, but was very helpful the second time we spoke to her about booking a trip. Another lady (Australian) was downright unhelpful!

The apartments are opposite each other, so there's not a massive amount of privacy, but that didn't worry me too much. However, this is not a place for jumping out of bed and throwing the curtains open first thing...put a robe on beforehand! ;o)

We had a studio apartment overlooking the lap pool at the back off the complex, and that brings me to the biggest negative about these apartments. The noise from the trains! For some reason they toot every time the go past, no matter what time of the day. At 5am this can be really annoying, although sometimes they seem to thunder past so close, they feel like they're in the room with you!

All in all, the apartment was nice, and I'd very probably go back there because it is convenient for many day trips (daintree/ cape tribulation, kuranda scenic railway / skyrail, reef tour, atherton tablelands, waterfall circuit, etc) but the train noise was a problem at times.
