Apart from the various signs of aging, referred to by other reviewers, several things stood out for us to make this a 'not again' hotel. Mr Surly at reception was one; no coffee, tea, sugar and milk in the room, only available from reception was another; but the biggest turn-off was the breakfast. No skim milk and a poor selection of fruit was annoying but not a big issue, however the luke warm eggs, bacon, etc in the bain maries certainly was. Food kept below proper temperature is a real health concern. Cairns is a competitive accommodation market - check around and you will do better.

The Hotel Cairns is an old Queensland hotel that has an oldish charm about it. The room, though as you would expect a little dated, was comfortable though the air con put up a good racket.
We took a bed and breakfast rate and the breakfast was good, but come on, make your own instant coffee in a breakfast restaurant! Hardly of international standard really.

The hotel is ok but very dated! The bathroom in very old and not appealing tiles very old and worn with seal around bath worn and just overall tacky. Reception only has 1 staff member to book in everyone at a very stern 2pm check in and they have to give you a bag with tea and coffee at reception. Very weird set up!

Breakfast was so incredibly disappointing! All the adverts and brouchers display lush tropical fruit platters however a very small selection of fruits available with tinned fruits???? Yuk

I asked for soy milk after specifying dietary requirements on booking and was told no.

Overall a very dated hotel in a noisy location and not as advertised.

We booked a room at the Hotel Cairns on March 3, 2013 for one night on June 29, 2013 through Orbitz We arrived at 11:30am on the 29th. The room was not ready. We were told to return at 2:00. We left our luggage and returned at close to 2:00. We were given a key to the room. When we entered it, the room was very hot. The A/C was not working. The head housekeeper came to the room to fix the A/C. At first she said that for the A/C to work properly the "door to the bathroom" had to be closed. Even with that, the housekeeper could not fix the A/c. The housekeeper told the desk clerk to give us another room. The clerk said none was available, but she expected the manager some time after 3:00 and he "might" be able to fix it. We had been traveling for about 40 hours and were not interested in waiting in a lobby to see if the A/C could be fixed. We left and requested a cancellation and went to the Holiday Inn across the street. We immediately contacted Orbitz about the incident and are still waiting to work out a refund. Did I mention that no coffee is provided in the room. Finally security is very lax. Avoid at all costs.

Room Tip: Stay away from the ground floor.

We have just had a lovely 7 nights at Hotel Cairns. We don't travel much these days but this was a special reason and we felt we deserved a nice week away from the everyday routine....

We walked everywhere and so found that this hotel being close to the main drag was great. Also only a 15-20 minute walk to the Marina.
We were there to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary and had our free Hotrock meal on Sat night which was our anniversary.
The staff were lovely , took photo's for us and shouted us some free drinks for our Aniversary. The Hotrock meal is really nice too....

Dave the Barman is very friendly , manager Angus very friendly and nice, Warwick on reception was friendly but the two girls who were on the desk at various times were not friendly and don't do this hotel any justice. !!!!
They treated us like we were a nuisance rather than a paying guest.
So please don't judge the place by the lack of niceness at reception.
Those girls although efficient (BUT SO UNFRIENDLY) don't deserve their jobs .
We told Angus about the lack of hospitality on the desk.
He appreciated our feedback....
We were in a Tower room on level 4 and found our room quiet and clean and comfortable. The balcony was nice to sit out on in the sun or in the evening and we enjoyed the extra room it gave us.
We felt the tea and coffeee should have been replenished daily when our room was serviced but had to ask at reception if we wanted more than the original supply that was there on the day we arrived.
We went and bought some coffee and tea bags....!!!
Although in hindsight you could just take some from the breakfast area as there is plenty there.

The bathroom in our room was a bit of a worry with the shower OVER the bath, older folk find that a bit frightening as we try to avoid anything that could cause a fall, and getting in and out of bathtubs can be a hazard..
We thought a walk in shower would have made a lot more sense.
So if you are unable to get into a bathtub to have a shower this could be a big problem for you.... There were several hand rails but still a bit dangerous we though for older folk....

Breakfasts were always nice even though the hot food was only just warm (even though we had breakfast as early as 6-15am some mornings), we still enjoyed the breakfasts there and there is plenty of choices fruit, cerials, hot food juices, tea and coffee etc ....
The gardens and eating areas are all lovely and tropical and the pool looks nice
(even though we didn't try it) .
The little Smart Cars are a good idea and although we didn't use them we noticed they were well used....
All in all a lovely hotel to stay at and we recommend it totally for those who like the idea of an older style Hotel, it wont suit anyone looking for modern, flash or pretencious accommodation but we thought it was lovely and we enjoyed our stay .......
another word of construtive criticism....We had a very late flight out 7-30 pm and had to leave our luggage at reception ALL DAY, we checked out at 10-15am , the young lady at reception told us it would be locked up and safe but when we returned 5 hours later it was still sitting in reception, had been sitting all day for anyone to walk off with so if you check out and want to have your luggage looked after please make sure it is locked up before you leave
I have only given constuctive criticism where needed and let any prospective customers know what we found a bit lacking, otherwise our overall experience in this lovely hotel was great and we would not be afraid to return there. you will enjoy the ambience and the lovely surrounds....
Thank you to all at Hotel Cairns who made our stay so happy....

Room Tip: Room 401 is nice and quiet.... THE Shower is over the bath though, so be carefull if you are a sen...

The hotel looks and feels like a hotel in the tropics should. The room we stayed in, a Plantation Room, was clean, comfortable and well appointed. The small balcony at the front of the room looked out towards the harbour and seafront and was a great place for a quite afternoon drink.

The buffet breakfast, included in the tariff, whilst not extensive was more than adequate. The Plantation restaurant again was very troplcal with lots of palms and luxuriant growth/ The staff in all the hotel attended to all our needs without any drama or fuss and, in fact, made several tour bookings in a helpful manner.

The bathroom/toilet area, much to cramped and dysfunctional, detracted from the otherwise good impressions the hotel left. Also during the three days we were there coffee/tea making ingredients were never available in the room despite the room having the required equipment to make coffee/tea.

Other hotels maybe slightly more central but we would stay here again because the hotel has a nice comfortable feel.

Room Tip: Stay in Plantation room rather than City room

An old hotel, badly run.

When you check in do you need to go up a flight of stairs, along a corridor, down a flight of stairs, with all your luggage and no assistance?

In Cairns, do you want a room with no view, and no opening windows?

Why, in a $150 dollar per night hotel would you have jugs in the rooms but no tea, coffee, sugar?

Having collected a few sachets from the front desk do you need to find that there aren't any teaspoons?

Reverse the process, and that was me checking out first thing in the morning.
