“very good apartment, and very enthusiastic host”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 March 2010

I spent five days and four night in this apartment hotel with my wife and mother. The apartment room is very clean, and full facilities with well organized . Especially, the host Andrew is very hospitable, and gave us a lot valuable advice, even help us to get discount when booking a dinner cruise. I'll choose this apartment again next time travel to Cairns!

I stayed at the Waterfront Terraces for three weeks with my husband and teenage daughter in a 2 bedroom apartment. The accommodation was very comfortable from the ducted air conditioning to the relaxing heated pool. The apartment was fully self contained with a full kitchen, laundry, bath and lovely shower with excellent pressure. It was a pleasure to be in and to have friends visit or to watch free movies on the 32" LCD TV . Every apartment has views over to the Esplanade and the location is quiet (very sound proofed), perfect for walks on the Esplanade and yet very close to the city. Andrew was the perfect host very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed every day there and would happily return when next in Cairns. I recommend this accommodation to anyone wanting a very comfortable, relaxing, peaceful and rejuvenating stay in a beautiful location.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 January 2010

Arrived midday and on entering the appartment we were pleasantly suprised - the one bedroom appt was spacious and very well equipped, including a washer and drier. The first thing I did was go out onto the balcony that overlooks the mudflats that stertch for miles in Cairns. On the balcony I was dismayed to find two cigarette ends and an old ATM statement, clearly left by the last occupants and not cleaned away by the staff. There were also ants on part of the balcony but that didn't bother me much as we were in the tropics and that can be expected. I cleaned up one of the ciggy butts and the statement.

On going back into the living area I found that the floor had been partially swept but where the rug met the tiled floor there was a lot of debris, sand, dirt and fluff - not what I would expect in a 2* let alone a place that calls itself 'luxury appartments' with a seemingly 5* rating. In tha bathroom there was dirt, hair and fluff behind the toilet and the top of the tiles were filthy in places (where they fell in shaddow - as if the cleaner thought we wouldn't notice as the area was in shaddow!!!).

On our way out to walk into Cairns I mentioned the ants, the balcony and the state of the floor to the owner/manager who said he would deal with all three things. When we got back the ants had been sprayed but the remaining cigarette butt was still insitu!!!! The floor had been swept but only round the rug area and there was no change in the bathroom.

That evening my wife and I cooked in the appartment and the first plate I took out of the cupboard had dried food stuck to it! I took two more out and they were OK - I then took the cullender out and it too was filthy with dried food. I took the plate and the cullender straight down to the manager and advised him to sack what passed for a cleaner at the place.

The two articles reappeared (clean) three days later when we were due a linen change - and that's exactly what we got - no more no less.

One thing I never got was any form of verbal or written apology - very disappointing.

The appartment as a whole was also shabby and needed a lick of paint - the furniture was cheap and one of the chairs was held together with electricians tape - goodness knows who looks at these places and gives them a rating.

And the piece de resistance was that at the end of the stay we were obliged to take our own rubbish down to the bins! I have never seen that before in the rules and regs of any hotel or appartments - let alone a 5*!!!!!

The only other thing of note was that it was a good 25 minute walk to town and a full 45 minutes if you wanted to walk to the station. That means you will only want to do it once a day - so it's a taxi if you want to go back into town later for an evening meal ($12 each way - approx 15 GPD there and back). And when the temperature is 32 degrees and 98% humidity it means any walk into town leaves you soggy and sweaty, regardless of how slow you try and walk. So my view is that it's too far out of town.

Tip: We went in January, which is the height of their season and it wasn't busy - all along the Esplanade there were hotels and appartments displaying vacancy signs (didn't see one that said No vacancy) and all were advertising standby rates (even Waterfront Terraces) which means you would get somewhere to stay very reasonably. When I spoke to the manager he intimated that he would drop as low as $100 per night for a stay of 5 or 6 nights - unfortunately we had pre paid but others may aswel benefit from the resession!!

Waterfront_Terraces, Manager at Waterfront Terraces, responded to this review, 27 January 2010
The points mentioned in the review are accurate except that the reviewer conveniently forgets to mention that he arrived mid morning, unannounced and was told that the room was being cleaned but he could go up and leave baggage or if he was OK with the room he could check in - we did not charge him for this even though we could have. The cleaners saw that the guest had checked in and each assumed that the room had been finished by the other - the floors had not been cleaned at this stage. As he didn't come down until about 4pm (after the cleaning staff had left), I assumed there was no problem. So in this case the room was not at our usual standards. I did pop up very quickly and go over it but I also have to attend the front desk and couldn't spend that much time up there, nor could I tell after 6 hours of occupation what exactly he was talking about - I did miss the plate and the colander. The colander is plastic and was stained not dirty but the plate was a bit greasy and would most likely have been picked up in the final inspection- had we been given the chance to do one.
Through all this he could have rung down to reception or left his bags and come down as instructed, gone for a walk and let the cleaners finish.
Other errors in his review are: He did get a verbal apology: We are not and have not claimed to be 5* : The comment regarding garbage in our compendium reads "It would be appreciated if you could remove rubbish from your apartment prior to departure" this is a health and safety issue as syringes are sometimes left in the bin. No guests are "obliged" to do so but about 80% of guest help with this and no guests have ever been charged for not helping: Our location is posted on Google maps in Expedia where he booked as well as on our web site and the climate, about which information can be easily obtained prior to coming, is unfortunately out of our control. The guest chose not to use the bus system (the bus stop is about 200 meters away) or hire a car and walking in high humidity, while not pleasant, is hardly our fault.

The second we walked through the reception door we were greeted by the manager who was friendly and went out of his way to make us feel welcome unlike the plenty of other poor service we received in other large more expensive hotels.
We had a look at the tours and he was giving us tips and information like he owned the tours he seemed to know that much about them. You can even book the tours at reception without even having to leave the hotel, more than enough information was provided to make an educated choice of what ones to go on. Tours were only a walk away from the hotel or tour operators came and picked us up.
The manager knew just about every business in town suggesting good restaurants, close shops and some other not soo good places to go during our stay.
When we went to our room, we were surprised at the size of it, much larger than other hotels, self contained kitchen, good sized bedroom with built ins, good sized balcony, washing machine to do all our washing, drier to dry it which we found very useful, excellent sea views, comfortable lounge suite, LARGE fridge to put all our stuff in, not like one of those tiny bar fridges you find at alot of hotels you can barely fit 2 small bottles of water in. Almost a home away from home it was that large.
Very quiet location, hardly any traffic noise as it is away from the main roads and far enough from the CBD not to attract drunks and other nuisences but not too far to have a nice stroll into the city centre which took us about 20 minutes. On that nice stroll you get the nice scenery of the beach and other places as you stroll along the esplanade and other streets of cairns.
The airport being quite close was not an issue, not directly in the flight line like other hotels so plane noise on landing was pretty much non-existent, you used ot hear a plane or two taking off and turning before reaching the hotel but after the first couple i forgot they were even there.
I definately made the right decision of staying at this hotel for a week with its lovely sea views, quiet atmosphere, excellent ducted airconditioning and that lucious heated pool i spent quite some time in.
Plenty of undercover parking places if you drive, but the week we spent there we never needed to drive as everything was within walking distance.
If there was anything bad i would say about the place is that from the back of the hotel it looks a bit untidy, but who cares, its whats inside that counts.
Highly recommended, im my opinion the rooms are underpriced for my expectations, it should cost more to come to this great location. We will be returning next christmas/new years for another weeks stay.

Loved staying there and would highly recommend this to any traveller who prefers to self cater than stay in usual hotel type place - impersonal and breakfast only, the manager is very helpful and it is only a short walk into town.

After a long flight (delays and lost luggage) the reception made us feel very welcome and our 2 bedroom apartment on the top floor was beautiful, containing everything one could possible want for our 5 night stay. And why cook when you have some of the best restaurants only a short stroll away!
Situated on the quieter end of the Esplanade, we opted to leave the car and walk along the boardwalk into town (approx 20 mins. and NO parking problems) where the choice of eating catered for every possible taste. One night we used the facility's BBQ to great effect.
My favourite: the beautiful pool (also heated) where we spent many hours relaxing! And no children in sight!!!
