We arrived on a very late flight and the management made efficient arrangements for our key pickup.
The staff were friendly and efficient. The room was clean and very well laid out.
We had a nice outdoor balcony sheltered by palms. The pool and seperate sheltered barbecque area were really nice.
Its location is close to the boardway walk by the sea. The walk into Cairns is flat and pleasant but takes at least 20 minutes. The airport is about 10 minutes drive away. For those without a car the motel had excellent booking facilities for trips etc with pickup and drop off.
We would certainly return there. We considered it very good value.

A family owned nice, quiet and confortable motel for families in the north of Cairns. The rooms are clean and confortable with a kitchenette. The staff and owners are very friendly and helpful. Wireless internet is fast but you have to pay for it.
Located 2km from the Cairns center, you can reach the bars, shop and restaurants with a 30 minutes walk on the esplanade or a very short taxi ride.

Price and location are decent for Cairns but is it worth it? Dishes were dirty on arrival. Carpet was old, worn and dirty and was not vacuumed during our stay. Though management offered some help, ants were an ongoing problem. Housekeeping was poor at keeping bathroom supplies stocked.
Carla the manager (or owner?) backed out on a verbal financial agreement on a booked tour costing us an unexpected extra $66.
The bed was comfortable and the room was quiet.
Overall, I wish I had spent more and stayed in a nicer place.

As the new owners of Reef Palms, it was with regret that we read your review. Your stay at Reef Palms was less than satisfactory. Since taking over in September 2011, we have upgraded Reef Palms considerably and hope that, if you are in Cairns sometime in the future, you would consider staying with us and perhaps providing feedback to us on our newely refurbished rooms.

We are currently staying at the Reef Palms in Cairns and just can't make ourselves leave. After booking for only 2 nights we are still here 5 days later. The staff are great with the best recommendations for tours. Rooms large and very clean, with the best beds and the pool is perfect after a day out in the heat. It will be hard to leave tomorrow but we will definitely be back, loved every minute of it.

We booked 2 weeks at the Reef Palms over the phone and actually ended up paying a $200 "cancellation fee" so we could cut our stay short after an unpleasant 5 day stay.

The hotel / area:
The Reef Palms is about a 20-30 min walk from Cairns central shopping / restaurant districts and the tour departures are at least 45 mins away. Add on 10-15 minutes travel time if it's hot outside. You will need to rent a car to fully enjoy Cairns and at that point you might as well stay in Palm Cove (I recommend the Melaleuca Resort) or Port Douglas. Cairns proper also has no accessible beach, whereas the majority of resorts in Palm Cove have a beach just steps from the resort front door. If you do visit Cairns, make sure to try the Villa Romano restaurant.

The room / facilities:
Overall our room was dirty and run down and each time we came home to our room we were greeted by a strange smell -- which we arguably got used to. The kitchen consisted of a very simple hotplate with a simple selection of cookware, blackened and dented from use. As mentioned in another review, the ground floor patios should be avoided. My girlfriend also ended up with bites all over her legs that we hope weren't bed bugs. Finally, our $3/hr wireless internet cut out for 2 of the 5 days we were there. The only bright spot was the Reef Palms pool which we enjoyed.

The staff:
The night staff girl who helped us plan our tour to the Great Barrier Reef was quite friendly and helpful. However, after giving our cancellation notice, Carla the day manager became very rude / hostile and threatened to charge us for our full booking (9 extra days - nearly $900). After requesting more toilet paper (we used the one roll we had) and trying to amicably resolve things, Carla dismissed my girlfriend telling her to "just get out, leave my office - I'm sick of you". Another choice customer service quote was that she would "charge us for as much as she could" because we had made up our mind to leave and the "damage had already been done". Nice..

Not wanting to get into a huge confrontational argument on our vacation, we grudgingly paid the 72 hrs cancellation fee and went on to actually enjoy our vacation in Palm Cove.

Below are a number of pictures we took in our room.

  • Liked — The pool wasn't bad.
  • Disliked — Room was dirty, day manager was rude

Had a great stay here. The room was bright and airy and the pool was pleasant. It's about a 30 minute walk from the city though, which isn't pleasant in 30+ degrees and paying for taxis can mount up. Would highly recommend it for those who aren't planning on partying a lot.

I only stayed here for one night as it was so close to the airport. Once you shut the doors there was no noise from the planes! Very easy to find, quick to check in. I got a cheap rate on the internet and was upgraded when I got there! Their internet connection was not great - the wireless in the room only connected 5 mins at a time. But reception was v helpful in refunding me. Lots of restaurants near the water, but you need a car if you stay here! Room smallish but furniture ok. It was good value for money!!

  • Liked — I had an early flight the next morning - only 20 mins to the airport!
