We took the sunset cruise yesterday. The crew were very friendly and hospitable from start to finish. Despite the dull weather plus showers we did see crocodiles, we also saw a sea eagle and hawk, plus loads of bats. Jenny really knew her stuff and even let two young boys take the wheel of the boat under her guidance. With a complimentary drink on boarding and nibbles and dips on the return journey this cruise is value for money.

Spent 8 days at Port Douglas, in perfect climatic conditions, amongst rich tropical foliage, punctuated by deep burst of bougainvillea colour and well manicured lawns. The town itself is a collection of very well presented accommodation, and retail outlets to walk around where food, beverage and trendy clothing is readily available everywhere. Living with a family member , and with transport provided, we found that about $200 adequately covered meals and other incidentals for each day at " Port" .

Had planned previously to go snorkeling, or take a trip out to the reef. The craft available to provide these services are in the realms of floating " Gin Palaces " ; well appointed , invariably white and beautiful to look at , but with charges that would exceed our daily budget up to threefold, when taking into account, the cost per person ].

The Lady Douglas was quite different. Here is a wide bodied stable craft , with paddle wheels, arranged with a deck house, and a stout canopy frame and a fitted awning which provides adequate protection from either tropical rain or shade from the strong sunlight . The deck house comprises a steering position for the skipper, a toilet, and a cabin from which friendly catering services are delivered once the trip is underway. The deck is absolutely flat with no steps and coated with non slip safety paint. Boarding is very easy as the way across from the floating pontoon is at the same level, allowing push chairs with children to be very easily placed aboard.

Continuous Seating is arranged around the bulwarks [ side of boat ] and centre seating allows an outward view for those thus inclined, who don't want to sit sideways to look out. The brass smoke stack is reminiscent of Humprey Bogarde's African Queen. The vessel is propelled by a quiet mumbling diesel situated somewhere below, and the propulsion was evidently by propeller, with the paddle wheels probably being for show. She is made of aluminum.

Before setting out, we were offered complimentary drinks, and later snacks by the hostess. You pay for any drinks after that which is fair enough.

We ventured out of the Marina, past the yacht club, and up a waterway where several yachts were moored, then onto dense mangrove creeks. The whole experience was well worth the money. It was a family atmosphere. The skipper pointed out items of interest on the intercom, whilst you sipped on your wine and drank in the ambiance. The primary interest was crocodile spotting which kept everybody interested. In actual fact we only saw one that day, but it didn't really matter.

The skipper and crew member were well turned out, competent and friendly, and it was good to be afloat and see Port Douglas from the water. Our trip was the last of the day, and lasted just over 1 1/2 hours, at $ 30 each .

We had a fabulous afternoon aboard the Lady Douglas. From the moment we stepped on board, the experience exceeded expectations. We were greeted with friendly smiles, served a drink and off we went on the cruise. The commentary was interesting and informative. It was really peaceful and relaxing to cruise down the inlet, seeing wrecks from recent cyclones, birds, crabs and of course the highlight - 4 crocs! There was plenty of room on board, and lots of photo opportunities. Jenny was a delight and very kindly let our girls (6 and 3.5 yrs) each have a turn at steering the boat - this was their best moment of the trip and what they remember most of our holiday. Highly recommended!

Booked this trip for the sunset trip, went on not excepting to see a croc, as we had been advised that they were rare. When the cruise commenced we were informed that the on thing that the crocs did not like were, speed boats. Went up the river and that was worth the trip. On our return, right in the middle of the river, there was a nice big croc and it look as if we were to get a good look and some nice photos, then around the corner came a speed boat and the croc left. Overall a great trip to go on, very relaxing and the staff were really friendly, would go again.
