Niramaya Villas and Spa

My sister in law booked a two bed villa so we didn't know what to expect. When the staff member showed us around we felt truly blessed. The villa was beautiful in a Thai style giving privacy from neighbouring villas but also we had privacy from the in laws divided by a lovely outdoor water feature with water Lilly's and a resident frog and tadpoles! The plunge pool, lounge area and the way the main living area can be opened up with its large sliding doors was beautifully planned out. Not sure how much she paid but my sister in law did well! - the comunual pool is set in a lovely area to by the main reception. It was off season so was very peaceful. Can imagine the price shoots up in season but a truly stunning retreat

Niramaya resort was perfect for my wife & three girls (9yo twins & 6yo). But easily accommodates 3 couples in queen size beds & 2 singles.
We stayed for 10 nights, had the most relaxing time, the apartment was sensational with all amenities double fridge, TV's in every room, both indoor & outdoor spa bath (kids loved this), its own private glass fenced pool (bigger than a lap pool), outdoor BBQ area, & a Balinese inspired feel to the apartment that was just brilliant after a busy year. Air Con in each room worked a treat, and made sleeping easy. Every morning was a delight to wake up to, fall into the pool & then enjoy breakfast in the outdoor area.
Room is not cleaned every day, but towels are changed, & rubbish collected every 2-3 days which was ample.
Port Douglas is approx 6min drive (so you'll probably need a hire car), restaurants were many & varied with Salsa & On the Inlet our best picks...and the toad racing at the Pub was a classic evening for the kids.
Habitat Zoo (Koala photo), Mosman Gorge (amazing to swim in the current downstream), Cape Tribulation all great day trips, but the highlight was the day on the Great Barrier reef with Quicksilver. Scuba diving (with all the girls) seeing 2 turtles & the amazing array of fish (plus the coral) was simply an awesome trip & lived up to its name in every respect.

These villas certainly have the wow factor. They are large and spacious and finished to a high standard. Each villa is secluded from its neighbour by lots of plants and they are situated around a large lake surrounded by beautiful well maintained gardens. Each villa is privately owned and there is a management team who show the clients to their villas. I would certainly recommend a stay here if you are only going for a couple of nights however if you intend to say longer (we stayed 6 nights) I would suggest you try another villa complex/hotel. After 3 nights two girls arrived, they put 4 clean towels on the bed and pushed a broom across the middle of the floor. We did not receive a change of bed linen nor did they remove the used towels. By now the floors in all areas needed sweeping and mopping, the bins needed emptying, the bathroom needed a clean and the leaves/flowers that looked so beautiful on arrival were now dying and the water beginning to smell. Remember it is very hot and humid here. There was plenty of equipment at the villa, and yes I could have done my own housework but at $440 dollars a night I expected some level of housekeeping. (Even in a Mediterranean villa you have a linen change and bathrooms/floors cleaned at least once!). When we approached the front desk they said they would send the girls back the next day, but apparently they happened to call whilst we were out. When we went back to the front desk we were told it wasn't worth it now as we were leaving in a couple of days. We complained on checking out and was told that the Manager would contact us either by phone or e-mail, we have not heard from him. On speaking with a local shopkeeper we were informed that the on site restaurant managers were pulling out of the resort as they too were unimpressed with the lack of management care.

We booked this resort after our first choice was unavailable and it turned out we were lucky. The accomodation is first class, spacious (approx 350 m2) well appointed and clean. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and it's really quiet and peaceful.
Ideally when staying here it's best to have a car. The resort is quite a way out of town and the alternative to a car is the shuttle service. However we found the shuttle (which is chargeable) to be infrequent and quite unreliable. Normally a situation like this would be enough to prevent me from booking again, however the overall experience was good enough for me to return if I visit Port Douglas in the future.

Stayed 3 nights in Port Douglas Niramaya 4 bedroom villa and although a fantastic place to stay was greatly disappointed in room quality and customer service. Air cons in both main bedrooms did not work at all, as well as one of the rooms had a fantastic looking spa bath that was not working either. For $1600 (locals rate) for the three nights i would of expecting everything in the villa to be functional as would anyone. Upon notifying staff of these issues we were told that Niramaya do not advertise spas on their website anymore due to costs involved in fixing them., as well as that someone will check our air cons during the day. I checked their website and it does mention spas in selected villas and obviously our villa had one so this was a lie. Someone did come check our air cons whilst we were out for the day but no notes or feedback was given on what was going on. Air cons were not fixed and was basically swept under the carpet so to speak. Overall was a good place to stay, the private pool was great but expected everything functional especially with the price we paid this dampened our experience. Would most likely go somewhere else now if we returned to Port Douglas.

Stayed at Niramaya for 6 nights with my husband for a babymoon - booked privately with owner.

Absolutely beautiful villas, great for a large family. Not great for small children due to the unfenced ponds and rooms in separate wings.

We locked ourselves away for the whole 6 nights after stopping by Macrossan St for groceries and didn't reappear until we checked out. It was fantastic to escape the World.

However, if you wanted to dine out every night I think this would become annoying at this resort as you need to get the shuttle into Macrossan or go to the restaurant located at the resort (not open every night nor for breakfast). We didn't see any restaurants that got our attention at Macrossan St and dined for lunch at the resort restaurant once and and weren't impressed. The resort restaurant is a separate business so you don't get the streamlined service between reception and the restaurant ie. reception didn't know that the restaurant was going to be closed for lunch while we were there.

I got the feeling that this wasn't really a resort but holiday houses in a letting pool with an estate agent with a reception desk. The service at reception just lacked that 5 star quality that you expect at large well known hotels and resorts.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stayed, loved having our own private pool, but just book this resort knowing what is on offer and available and make sure it suits your needs.

Having travelled alot through out the world, I personally I wouldn't return to Port Douglas. It just didn't have a great vibe, a bit hippy, a bit cheap, a big bogan..... Wasn't quite what I expected. We'd come from Hayman Island and much preferred that 5 star resort holiday island experience.

First, the villa was nicely designed and the resort area well landscaped, and pretty good value for six people.

However...this isn't a hotel but a managed selection of holiday villas, rented out by the owners but managed by the company that also manages the main area. This is not made clear on booking, and does affect how the place is run, as the reception desk don't know the villas well, can't answer a lot of questions (eg how kitchen appliances work), but don't know the owners and can't put you in touch with them.

Another side effect is they don't seem very considerate of temporary short-term guests letting villas. The main pool and dining area were closed for a private wedding the first 24 hours of our stay, with no notice at time of booking or arrival, or apology or compensation. With kids this was actually an issue as we wanted to spend time there, the plunge pool in the villa is nice but not big enough for swimming.

That evening the music went on late, and extremely loud, despite multiple complaints (the reception said) and again no warning or apology.

On our last day the pool was also taken up in the morning by a fashion shoot, and while not closed, made swimming there uncomfortable.

The room isn't serviced during your stay (at least not in our villa) or towels or toiletries replaced. The kitchen is missing a lot of quite basic things and there is no little hotel shop to replace them (eg it comes with about enough coffee for 5 cups -- which didn't even last a day in a 6 person villa).

Its about 15 minutes drive from port douglas proper but near the wildlife habitat, the start of 4 mile beach, and the bruce highway.
