“Brilliant place”
Reviewed 10 July 2014 via mobile

Couldn't recommend this place more highly. We arrived in peak time with no booking thankfully we got the last room which while small was immaculately clean and fresh. Over four nights we moved rooms 3 times, each time the staff moved all our things to the next room. The next room was roomy fresh and had a huge soft bed. Each room we had, had its own balcony with BBQ which was great. The hotel supplied all manner of things to make our stay more memorable these included DVD s, books magazines, tennis racquets balls, bikes, beach chairs, towels, push chairs even shopping trolleys ALL at no xtra charge. The staff were always smiling and helpful and the whole place had a wonderful atmosphere not to mention it was only 100mtrs to the beach. What more could you want?

Really great location and excellent place to stay. We had a balcony room overlooking the sea. The room has everything you could need even spare batteries for the remotes.
Downstairs in the lobby you can help yourself to the push bikes, games, pool and beach towels, eskies, ice, beach chairs, prams and DVD's. Staff are really friendly and very helpful.
Would definitely recommend to others.

This was our first visit to Port Douglas and we did lots of research beforehand on Tripadvisor and the internet in general to find the accommodation that would suit us best. We chose ByThe Sea because of the easy to navigate comprehensive website, the types of rooms available, location on the main street - Macrossan St., closeness to Four Mile Beach, free extras, and lastly cost.

When we arrived, By The Sea didn't disappoint. A wide walk-up entry ramp leads directly to the Reception area where the friendly staff arranged fast check-in and gave us assistance with getting our luggage to our room. There were 9 steps up to the first floor where our room was located (there is no lift).

The room type we stayed in was a "King Bed Balcony" which didn't have a sea view but we only had to walk out the front of By The Sea and there it was! The studio apartment had a kitchenette (i.e. small kitchen) and balcony. The bathroom was a reasonable size with a large single shower, toilet and one basin, plenty of bench space and several cupboards. The living/sleeping area had sufficient space for (in order from wall to wall exactly) a bedside cabinet, king size bed, another bedside cabinet and a 2-seater couch. There was plenty of storage for clothes etc. and the bed was very comfortable.

There was lots of natural light in the apartment but no actual sun shining directly through the floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors or on the balcony itself. This didn't bother us because of the lovely warm weather in Port Douglas. The view from the balcony was of lush green foliage lining the other side of the driveway. We didn't need to use the air conditioner and just used the ceiling fan.

The only thing that we would love to be added to the apartment is a remote controlled cover for the kitchenette skylight. We're sure that this is on By The Sea's To Do List. There were block out curtains on the windows but at sunrise the apartment was flooded with light via the skylight because it is studio-style apartment with no wall or partition between the kitchen and the sleeping area. I could see the skylight from the bed and unfortunately woke early each morning.

The location of By The Sea is ideal for a relaxing holiday. It is only 30 seconds walk from the start of Four Mile Beach and 3 minutes walk along the beach to the lifeguard station and the "swim between the flags" area where we swam each day.

We borrowed freebies from By The Sea including beach chairs ( choice of standard beach chairs, light weight directors chairs, sun lounges, deck chairs), shopping trolley, Esky's (cooler bags - various sizes), ice, beach towels, DVDs and books - fantastic.

Within 2 minutes walk of By The Sea along are several restaurants including HiTide, Zinc and Two Fish. Next to Zinc is Brumby's bakery, Foodworks convenience store, Portico Pizza and a gelateria. This is all at the quiet end of Macrossan Street.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay at By The Sea. It is one of the most comfortable, relaxing and practical accommodation properties we've ever stayed at. We're already planning a return visit.

Thank you so much Aus56.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated and we look forward to seeing you on your return visit (please remember to book directly with us to get the best deal).

With regard to the skylights, we are on the case. You are only the second guest to stay in these rooms to make reference to this point, but two concerned guests is enough for us, and we are in the process of organising optional block outs for these skylights (which are only in the room type in you stayed in).

Best wishes

By The Sea is a fabulously relaxing place to holiday. Everyone was very friendly, helpful, generous and genuinely cared about making our stay perfect. Located in the main Street one up from the beach and close to excellent restaurants. Rooms are very clean and comfortable. We will definitely stay here again on our next trip to Port Douglas.

By the Sea has everything one needs. So many options available to make it feel like home eg. games, DVD's, WIFI. The rooms was clean and had anything we required. Room 20 was fantastic! Some people may not like waking to a little natural light in the mornings but I love it so it was perfect.
They say it's all about location and By the Sea got that right too!
The girls are so friendly and helpful. Made our stay very relaxing.

Room Tip: Room 20 for couples

Hi Shannon

Thank you so much for staying with us and for writing such a lovely review. Both are so appreciated.

For the sake of those reading this, we provide the following information:

Room 20 is one our Sea View Superiors (called superior simply because for Port Douglas they have a superior sea view) and is a different configuration to the others. If you go to our website, click the ‘rooms’ link, and the click the details link for our Sea View Superiors, you will see photographs and layout for room 20 at the bottom. We are making further improvements to this room by introducing an interior table and replacing a few other items of furniture this week, so the photographs may be a little out of date, but they still give the idea.
We are looking into why this guest woke to natural light, as we have block out curtains & blinds in all of our rooms. If we discover there is a problem with the effectiveness of the block-out, then we will fix it immediately.

We hope this additional information is helpful to those reading this review.

Kind regards to all

OMG! By the Sea...perfect accommodation in a perfect location! Loved the website...very descriptive and inviting. Communication prior to our visit very supportive and helpful. From the moment we arrived, we felt very welcome, staff were ever so friendly and ready to help with whatever we needed. Our 'Cosy' room was just gorgeous, totally suited our needs. We couldn't believe the 'freebies', so refreshing to see people so generous. (Thank you, the ipad was very handy.) Nice to see ongoing maintenance/updating (love that BBQ area) and the ongoing addition of interesting nic nacs (the two bikes) around the grounds and building. Everything exceeded our expectations. We will definitely be back to By the Sea.

Room Tip: Our 'Cosy' room was just perfect for us. We just wanted a comfy (and clean)room as we wante...

Dear Mary B

Thank you for much for both staying with us and your lovely review. We so appreciate both, and we look forward to seeing you in the future (please remember that you get the cheapest price by booking with us direct)

Those reading this review might like to note that Mary was staying in one of our ground floor studios which we call Cosy, but which booking.com calls ‘Studio with Garden View’, and on other web sites is called a ‘Queen bed studio’ (as it is our only room with queen beds rather than king beds)

Kind regards to everyone reading this, and we hope to see you soon at By the Sea
