“LOVED IT”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

Stayed here back in February and the staff were so helpful and friendly from the minute we arrived to when we left. We stayed 3 nights in a 4 share dorm that had plenty of space and character. The shared facilities are close enough in my opinion to all the rooms. The bar was fun and always full of people willing to have a chat. One of the staff members was so helpful with booking our reef trip and cape tribulation day tour and my shuttle back to the Cairns airport. Highly recommend!!

I spent a week at Dougies with my daughter, visiting my son and his girlfriend during their travels down under.
I stayed in one of the double rooms, which was basic but clean and great value for money, the kitchen, showers and toilets are more than adequate and the whole atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, with lots of things going on should you wish to join in. But by far the best things about Dougies are the staff, I was made to feel welcome from the minute I got there and nothing was to much trouble! and to top it all the bar serves some of the cheapest beer in Australia!

We were in Port Douglas through Cyclone Ita. Before the storm, we were in a twin room. It was smallish but very comfy with the AC and our own small fridge. The showers and bathrooms were clean, and the property is lovely (lots of hammocks under trees, tons of birdsong) and close to the beach and the rest of Port Douglas. When the storm approached the staff were very helpful keeping everyone posted and helping people in the tents plan for the next few days. When it became clear that it was going to be quite a severe cyclone, they were very helpful with making arrangements so that everyone could make their flights. In our case, that involved moving down to Cairns too days early. We were sad to leave Dougies, but the staff very kindly gave us a full refund and helped us book into a hostel in Cairns. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

My friend and I stayed at Dougies in April. Originally we booked 5 nights but we were unimpressed with port douglas so we left after 2. We opted for the double room, which had two twin beds, a dresser, nightstand with lamp, ceiling fan, and window air conditioning unit. The walls were painted dark, which is odd for a small room. Lighter walls would make it so much brighter. The AC worked great, the beds were comfy, and they provided towels for the shower. The bathrooms were not the cleanest and the showers went from hot to cold every 5 seconds, with very little water pressure. This is the only hostel I've stayed at that makes you pay for internet, a huge negative for me, but at least it was fast when I used it. Another huge negative was the location. It is atleast a 20 minute walk from Dougies into town, which is pretty rough in the Australian heat, especially if you want to go into town multiple times per day. The staff was very friendly and helpful in picking out things to do, and when we decided to leave a few days early to go to Cairns they were helpful in recommending hostels in Cairns. This hostel had a very strange vibe to me. It almost seemed as if my friend and I were the only 2 real guests there and everyone else was a long term resident who worked there, and it was very hard to meet people. Overall it wasn't terrible, but next time I would opt for one of the hostels in town. I don't think I'll return to Port Douglas though. It was a ghost town.

We stayed at Dougies for 2 weeks in April 2014. My husband and I were in a "Stylie Tent" for 15 nights. The tent was spacious, with standing room. It had a fan, and a power outlet so that we were able to charge our laptop/phones, etc. The tent overall was great for the first few nights. We arrived in Port Douglas at the end of the rainy season so we experienced heavy rain for the first week of our stay. The tent was brand new, but after only 4 days it began to leak. It leaked from the 4 corners on the roof, and also from the front zipper as the front of the tent began to bow in a bit. One difficult night included a few trips outside in rain with our shoe laces to try and rig up a way to pull the front door outward so we wouldn't have a puddle on the floor, while using duct tape to try and prevent our foamy mattresses from getting soaked from the leaky roof. We told the staff the next morning who were good about sending out maintenance people to put a tarp over the tent, and housekeeping to change our sheets. After drying out our mattresses for the day, most of the issue was sorted except for the leaking front zipper. We ended up taking the front awning down ourselves to try and sort out the issue, still with little success. The tent was still bowing in, and we mentioned this to staff on 3 separate occasions. The tent just needed to be pulled out further but this was never done. Luckily, the rain finally stopped about 5 days before we left. At the time of check out this was brought up again, without much resolution. We understand that this is a hostel, but it's hard to justify the $260 dollar weekly price tag for a leaking tent.

The remainder of the facilities were nicely set up, but could definitely use some upgrading. 2 of the 3 washing machines were out of order. Getting laundry done included stalking the 1 working machine, sometimes for a couple hours, to ensure that you got a turn. Also, many of the elements on the gas stove tops would go out, and the fridge space was severely lacking. The bathrooms were cleaned well once daily in the mornings and were very satisfactory. The staff did their best to keep the shared kitchen clean, which is not an easy task.

This backpackers resort was very neat though in how it was laid out. There were frequent events put on and live music a couple times a week which was great. The bar is definitely the cheapest in town as advertised and the common area is nicely set up. There are hammocks and chairs throughout the yard which were enjoyable to use. There were bikes for hire and a pool amongst the conveniences. We met a lot of great staff and residents at the resort and, overall, enjoyed our time there.

It's beautiful place although have to walk about 10mins to the beach. Seems true when u going to the north and u'll find more friendly people.
Was stayed in 4dorms, quite small but it's alright. However have to queue when wanna get shower since the hostel was favourite for some people.
They have internet cafe with 4computers and the price isn't that expensive rather than in airlie beach that I had tried before.
Will back there for sure!

Stayed for three days (paid for a block week at a discount price but found an apartment, they refunded the days we hadn't stayed!) We used one of the parking spots but were able to use all facilities, decent kitchen facilities, on site bar and restaurant, large, clean toilets, staff were dead friendly and helped with any questions. Even pointed us to a notice board with daily job opportunities (if you're in Port Douglas to work). Many guests are working in PD but also many travellers too. Recommended!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Dougies is run by a bunch of us who had lots of fun backpacking around places of the world before, so we decided to start a hostel ourselves. We have the pretty relaxed atmosphere, without all of the formal procedures that some hostels have. Our philosophy is 'kick back and relax at Dougies'. We have all of the facilities that a fun loving backpacker could ever need, including a bar, refreshing swimming pool, free bbq facilities, shop (coke, ice-creams, chockies, etc), a huge self-cook kitchen, laundry, internet, satellite TV (really big one), hire bikes, fishing rods, tour desk and of course accommodation (doubles, twins, share rooms, camping, van sites and our own stylish canvas tents). But once you see our tropical gardens and cruisy front lawn you might just want to lay back and relax under a palm tree, kick back in a hammock, by the pool or you may even like to unwind on the grass and soak up some of the Far North's warm tropical sunlight. ... more   less
