I had been planning a return to Port Douglas for some time. A friend visiting from the US gave me a great excuse. Anyway, while searching for places to stay I was surfing out on ebay.com.au and found a few properties for rent. I found the Tropic Sands and it's owners John and Shirley Carney. I emailed John and got a great rate (less than $100 per night) staying right next to the Port Douglas township, located at the intersection of Davidson and Mowbray. From this intersection you go east directly to the beach - west to go to the marina - and to the north is Macrossan Street. On Macrossan Street you'll find all of the restaurants, pubs, cafes, shops, galleries, spas, etc.... In the morning's walk a block north and stop in at Brumby's Bakery. The chili sausage rolls were great.
As for the property itself... We stayed in room 8 - which is located on level one (2nd floor for US guests) at the front of the building and overlooking the pool. The traffic noise was minimal, but the sounds of nature were very loud. There is a flying fox (bat) colony that lives in the Port Douglas area and they all congregated in the tree's outside my bedroom window on the second night of our stay. They all went bezerk at about 4:10am and must have woken up half of Port Douglas. Anyway, the apartment is a one bedroom with kitchen. The kitchen had all the utensils to prepare meals. Also - John and Shirley are very thoughtful as there was a full pitcher of water in the refrigerator waiting for us. The place was very clean - and furnishings undamaged/well maintained. John left us a note with his mobile phone number to call if we had any problems during our stay. I rated this property excellent because of the excellent rates, the excellant location and the excellent level of personal customer service.
There are property managers on site and they provide all of the normal tour information / booking services. If you are considering renting a car you will even get a discount at the Lattitude 16 Car Rental (next to Thrifty on Macrossan Street) - since the Tropic Sands is a Lattitude 16 property. Rent a car and drive to Kuranda and check out the Butteryfly Sanctuary - or drive up to Cape Tribulation.
When travelling to Port Douglas consider the location of your accommodation - the weather conditions in the tropics (hot sun, high humidity, sudden rain showers, etc...) will have an impact on your walk into the township. Sunscreen and hats are essential! Dress in a natural fabrics (cotton/hemp).
