“Great value and perfect location”
Reviewed 2 July 2009

We recently stayed at the Tropical Reef Apartments with our 4 year old & 6 month old baby for 10 nights. The apartments were in an awesome location (couple mins walk to beach & main street), & they were clean & had all that we needed. If you are looking for a luxurious resort with all the mod cons, then this may not be for you. But if you are an average middle class family, looking for a family-friendly place that's comfortable & affordable, then I'd recommend Tropical Reef. We stay at Port Douglas every year for our annual holiday, & we would definately stay at Tropical Reef again. The staff were friendly & even took the time to chat with our daughter. Great value. We could have stayed another 10 days!!

We did not stay even the one night as we found a cockroach running about in one of the beds and a couple more under the beds. when we tried to talk to the manager, his attitude on the phone was rude and insulting.

Yes, this place is older & could use a facelift, but it is still clean.

Not to mention, we found it incredibly spacious! Our balcony was right off our main lounge, the kitchen was large, we had a washer and dryer in our apartment, and we couldn't have been happier. (and we had been to a LOT of places in Australia before we came here, so we had seen a lot).

Is it a luxury hotel? Absolutely not. But it is in a good location (easy walks to bars, bottle shops, internet cafes, restaurants), easy access to the beach (just cross the street), has a pool (which we actually never used because of the beach), and a fabulous front desk staff. Sarah helped us arrange all of our adventures-- she had been on most of the excursions herself and was incredibly knowledgeable and honest.

We were very pleased with our decision and would recommend this place. Don't expect a luxury resort, but do expect a great value and a fun time!

Upon our arrival we were quite dissapointed, we were expectng something a lot nicer and a bit bigger. Lounge area struggled to fit four adults comfortably, couches were very uncomfotable. Airconditioner in upstairs room was very, very noisy - struggled to sleep at night and the shower only had half a door, so water would go everywhere. Most of the lamps had no globes in them - or just didn't work at all.

On one morning they had maintenance men using high pressure hoses at 8am - which made my sister (who had 4 month old) very angry.

Pool at the rear of building was okay, the pool at the front was tiny!!!

There was a bit of rubbish around the outside and the whole place just looked like it just needed a really good tidy up.

I would recommend staying somewhere else for sure!!!

  • Liked — they had a cute cat???
  • Disliked — where do I begin??? just wasn't tidy/clean enough - not 4 stars!!

Very nice apartment hotel. Somewhat old, but kept in good condition. Staff is very helpful. Good location in central Port Douglas, close to the beach. Walking distance.

Minus for the small pool (actually 2) and the noisy ACs.

4 girlfriends and I stayed at Tropical Reef for a week last week and it was fantastic!
Booked through the hotels website we got a rate of $1260 for 7 nights which really couldn't be beaten for a two bedroom, 2 bathroom, full kitchen, balcony and huge roof top terrace on the upper level. All of this overlooked one of the pools- perfect. The apartment even had laundry facilities our own clothesline and best of all a dishwasher.
Location in Port Douglas is what it's all about and Tropical Reef is less than 100m to Macrossan St the main drag. We wouldn't have needed a car at all but it was the same price to hire one for 7 days as it was for 5 return transfers from Cairns! The car came in handy for all our sightseeing trips and saved us a stack on organised tours. Tropical Reef even supplies a free undercover car park for each unit.
I did a lot of shopping around before booking here and we honestly couldn't have been happier with the accommodation. It pays to look on the website as you can view each individual apartment- this is why we chose unit 17- it had been recently updated and was very modern. Some of the other units looked outdated.
Aristocat took us out to the GBR and while I have snorkelled all over the world I thought I might be nervous not being able to see land while I was in the water, this was not the case at all. I felt so safe, the crew were fantastic and highly entertaining. The food was great and the ride super smooth. Guided snorkel tour was great and the day seemed to go way too fast.
Zinc and Salsa's are the only two restaurants I would recommend, fantastic value, service. The girls were on a backpacking type budget and you could eat at both these places for EXACTLY the same price as the so called cheaper restaurants (but it was much much much better service). Mango Jam had very average food and wouldn'd serve lunch at 11:45am, the Courthouse hotel wouldn't serve us dinner at 5:52- we had to wait till 6pm. Most restaurants don't have english speaking staff which can be very amusing, frustrating and sometimes confusing!
Don't miss the icecream shop near Zinc, the closest one to four mile beach, we went there everyday and it was amazing.
I can't understand why Tropical Reef isn't one of the top hotels on this site but I'm kinda glad cause it really does make it a hidden gem.

our family of 6 stayed here for a week. a travel agent booked it for us and assured us it was nice. first, the positive - sarah, the manager was lovely. the location was excellent - close to cafes and beach. coffee plunger plus free local coffee was a nice touch. it was very clean. the negatives - this is only a 3 star as it is very old and tired and badly in need of a facelift. loungeroom not spacious enough, uncomfortable lounge plus only seating for 5 at best. carpets stained and old. kitchen and facilities old. bathrooms small and old fashioned. the pools are small and basic. the outdoors balcony was up a flight of stairs and had to be accessed thru a bedroom - not very practical for eating outdoors!! i would recommend booking all holiday components yourself instead of using travel agents.
