“loved it !!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2013

I booked a holiday at this resort then read some really concerning reviews. Rang the resort, a lovely lady spent time reassuring me which was appreciated., exceptional service !

I think the reviews that are not so positive have been written by people who should try the QT next door, which will cost them $5000 more. One must remember the price and when you are getting such a great deal, you have to compromise. The breakfast was absolutely fine, especially as it was included in our $1200 week long stay. If you are looking for absolute perfection and if you can afford to pay for it, go elsewhere. If you are looking for a comfortable base to explore the area, Rendezvous is perfect, especially if you have children.

It took about 2 hours of being at this resort for me to realize that I had absolutely nothing to worry about. Our spacious two bedroom villa opened out onto a beautiful lagoon pool. The 13 year old took one look at it and declared that this was 'the best holiday ever' the 2 year old eyes nearly popped out of her head. Our downtime at this resort was going to be spent in a shaded, beautifully landscaped oasis. Thank you rendezvous. Mind you there was kids jumping around and the 'brandy brothers' (not liquor, the ball game) but that just added to the entertainment. We couldn't of wanted a better place to relax.

And then Port Douglas .... The low Isles, amazing ! Great staff, awesome lunch on the boat, the tropical island and a beautiful snorkel over the reef. Mossman's Gorge the most incredible place to experience, especially if you get in the water. Kuranda sky rail, scary undertaking, turned into something I will never forget. Outdoor theatre, Ballyhooley Railway (Irish for Party Town ?) and the Sunday Market with the very inspirational local businesses. Port Douglas is just beautiful.

But back to the resort. I read reviews about critters all over the wall well they were just innocent little sugar ant (insect spray provided) but they really weren't a problem. No flyscreen, sure, but ceiling fans and air conditioners everywhere you needed them. Yes, the townhouses were older, some are renovated which has been done to a reasonable standard, they are simple and not displeasing. The musky smell was there, I could of burnt incense but after a little while, it just didn't bother me, with cooking smells taking over soon enough. The carpet is older, but not disgusting. The couch is like an outdoor setting, being cane, but the cushions are comfortable and it was fine for the amount of time we sat on it and watched TV. We took our own computer and internet, the kids would watch a DVD in bed, for some peace and quiet.

The shower downstairs had a high base and with the plug in made an awesome after pool bath for the toddler. The 13 year old took the main bedroom because once the twin beds in the second bedroom had been put together it made a massive king bed, perfect for us with the little one and her night time visits, The beds were comfortable with fresh linen, the bathroom was modern with a big walk in shower. I felt we were able to relax because it was comfortable enough to do so and it provided everything we needed.

We had only one set of towels but we had a washing machine and dryer if needed. Mostly clothes and towels dried easily overnight on the clothes horse or over the indoor balcony. The room not being serviced didn't bother me. Obviously that would increase the tariff, The breakfast is great, serve yourself, good choice, you are dining with lots of others, but as it is being served for a few hours so there is no wait really. If something does run out it is replenished quickly, you may have to wait a few minutes, it only happened to me once. It was a relaxing environment, definitely clean with polite and helpful staff.

I would definitely go back to Rendezvous. I think if you did encounter a problem there, they would be quite happy to sort it out anyway. Remember some are renovated and some aren't, that will be reflected in the price difference. The gardens as far as I can say, were beautiful, not pristine, but gorgeous regardless and of course all wrapped up in Port Douglas's beautiful weather.

My family stayed 4 nights. In fairness, it was good value for money for a family with young children. The bathrooms in our "deluxe" unit were newly done and location was okay (if you had a car). The aircon units in all rooms worked well.
But.....do not plan on spending much time in your unit. The pools were old and unattractive (only the kids were keen for a dip), the master bedroom was too small for even 1 bag but the worst part was the terribly uncomfortable furniture. There was no where at all to sit comfortably in the evenings. The cane furniture inside was abysmal. The outdoor areas were messy, dirty and unpleasant. I think the word "resort" is a massive stretch. These are very cheap, family friendly units. I only ate 1 of our included buffet breakfasts (say no more).

We arrived late at night , check-in was completed quickly and efficiently and the hotel restaurant was able to take us at short notice.
The pathways to the individual unit are not well lit. This was an inconvenience on the first night but we soon got used to this.
Food in the restaurant was good value and of a good standard. Menu did not change from day to day though.
Accommodation was spacious and comfortable. Showing some signs of its age. It reminded me of using a hired caravan in a caravan park. There was a musty smell throughout the property as if it hadn't been lived in for a while. The insect spray under the sink was useful to kill the small colony of ants living on the kitchen wall.
The seating in the lounge - cane furniture was not comfortable to lounge in.
There was no safe in the property, despite the information file declaring that ALL villa had a safe. However, reception staff took our valuables from us and put them in the main safe.
On the whole, the resort staff were excellent , especially when recommending activities and trips.

Port Douglas is a quieter alternative to Cairns and is closer to Daintree and the Reef.
There is a cheap, regular shuttle bus to Port Douglas -- it's not within walking distance by road.
If I were to visit Port Douglas again I would prefer somewhere a bit more modern.

Note: This is not a hotel. Rooms are not serviced daily. Additional charges will be incurred if extra towels, etc are required.

Room Tip: ensure there is a safe in your room.

We just spent 5 nights at RR. It's an older property and by no means as flash as some of the gin palaces further down the road to town but it is great value for money and a very adequate place to base yourself for a family holiday. The hidden gems are the smaller pool by the children's play centre and the gym/lap pool complex. You get what you pay for. I'd say we did far better than that!

Very disappointed! No fly screens on any window or door!!! Mucky, unkept! Outdated and badly in need of up-grading! The drain holes in the bathroom floors badly in need of cleaning out of old soap and scum! Dusty and spidery! Nice towels and bed linen! The bedrooms are very small and no room to put cases etc! The second bedroom you have trouble getting in the wardrobe because the bed is in the way! The outside area badly needs sweeping up of dead leaves! The pool is nice for children but a small seating area! The breakfast is adequate!

The pools were excellent, location great. The bbq's were very dirty , the gas jets were all blocked with fat and grime. We went to have dinner in their restaurant at about 7.30 pm one night without booking, there were 7 tables being used out of about 30, we were told they are to busy to feed 2 adults and a child, we complained to manager on the night only to be told that we only have a small kitchen and 2 chefs on and the wait staff were new...... We asked for in room takeaway, but was told that would be a 1.5 hr wait . I walked through again at 8.30pm to have a look and there were only 2 tables of people. We ended up driving too local chinese to get takeaway.
The next morning we spoke to the manager only to be told it was more or less up to the chef if he could feed us due to how busy he was. I said the restaurant was nearly empty , But we were told he usually works on the bookings and it was up to him if he could fit us in or not. So 7.30pm, quiet restaurant with only 7 tables occupied and 2 chefs, couldn't accommodate 2 adults and a child. The manager thanked us for our feedback ?? What the.....

A lot of the floor tiles in the breakfast buffet area are mostly cracked and in need of repair, the glass fence dividing the eating area and the pool area was dirty, coffee cups were dirty during breakfast, and the legs on the tables were all wobbly and looked like they were going to fall off.
The poofs you sit on which are tucked under the breakfast buffet table, are dirty from food spillage. We put the blanket that was on our bed, over the couch in our lounge room because it had food stains all over it , and this was a refurbished apartment. Overall ,the manager and the poor excuses of why we couldn't get a meal , and the worn and tired decor was what has got me to tell you all not to go to this place. We even had a wait staff member tell us that she was not happy with the running of the place.I recommend spending a bit more money to go to somewhere else a bit more updated and professional .

Room Tip: buy a tent, as this would be more modern

Stayed 5 nights and would happily return for a low-cost family holiday.

Pros:
- restuarant meals and pricing - we ate every meal in the restuarant during our stay and couldn't fault a single experience. Enormous serves, excellent value, great variety. A free child's meal with every main is great value and the kid's meals were terrific (steam chicken breast and fresh veg / spag bog/ fish and chips)

- happy hour in the bar is good value, $10 cocktails, $5 beer/wine/bubbles

- pools are fantastic, better than their website depict in fact. Four pools to choose from, waterfalls, tunnels, spas, lots of little paddling places for babies to splash, lap pool, really the highlight of the resort to be honest.

- rooms are fairly spacious. We stayed in a 2 bedroom deluxe - lounge/dining/kitchen/laundry/shower/WC downstairs, 2 bedrooms each with balcony plus bathroom upstairs.

- Beds are super comfy with good quality, proper hotel linen

- breakfast is a good variety and hot selection changes daily (although no sweet offerings such as pancakes - only savoury in the hot selection)

- being from Melbourne I was surprised the lattes were really good too ($4 extra)

- On check in I upgraded our 'included' continential breakfast for a hot breakfast at no cost (as we had less people staying than originally booked for)

- 5-6 min walk to the beach down a defined beach walk track (although dont listen to the instructions from the reception staff who all tell you to go to QT Hotel next door and THEN cross the road) - you'll be left wandering the highway looking for the track. Easy beach access is DIRECTLY out the front of Rendevous's entrance, look for the blue signs. Beach is absolutely stunning and surrounded with trees so lots of shady areas

- the grass ovals next to the lap pool are stunning - I think they might be shared with the QT Hotel next door? Far better maintained than the gardens around the resort and a great place for kids to stretch their legs. Althought lots of bites after an afternoon running around - suggest you use aeroguard as there's something bity in the grass?!

- lots of feedback in the reviews about the limited amenities but we found there to be plenty for our (5 day) stay. If you run out of anything you can purchase all items from reception for a resonable cost. I didn't find this an issue at all. Their website clearly explains what's included so good to review that before you get there if you think you need to. ALso, they're pretty clear that the rooms aren't serviced so we weren't expecting otherwise, You can hire additional linen (towels $2, etc) which are all really resonably priced as well.

- the play ground for the kids is great (best suited to 3+ year old) slides, swings, a climbing wall. If travelling with children it would be good to request a room near the kids playground/kid's pool as it's a good place for them to burn off energy. Although we spent more time at the grassed area near the gym!

- lots of shaded areas in every pool which is great for the little kids. The walkways around the pools all cemented pebbles which were painful on little feet after a while. Id recommend those water-shoes just to give little toes a break every day or so.

- within the restuarant there's one side of the verandah (usually in the shade) which has a couple of tables and a corner full of toys (lego, kid's chairs/table, play BBQ, etc). Its a great addition to the resort and a good place for kids to play while parent eat/drink/relax. Its not tucked out the back as many can be but has a lovely view of the pools too.

Cons:

- gardens and surrounds could do with a clean up, mostly dirt hills and lots of fallen leaves. Heaps of palm trees so does have a garden feel, but looks and feels quite tired. Grotty slimy puddles around the 'kids' pool which would be easily fixed with a quick spritz with a hose but are left as

- the floors in the room are really dirty - we had spider webs in the dust bunnies in our second bedroom, yuk. It looks like they get a quick once-over in the main walkways and that's all. The amount of dirt on the windowsills is truly awful.

- $4.40 per day to pay for the use of the in-room safe at a resort where guests are encouraged to be out all day, outragoues

- no wifi in rooms, only available in main reception/bar

- Reception staff are generally really unhelpful. Lots of shrugging of shoulders and one word answers. It got so depressing trying to get information we started to ask the gardeners/maintenance staff instead - they were much cheerier and much more helpful. Im on holidays, I know you're not, but a "good morning!" or a comment on the lovely weather every so often wouldn't go astray. It has the general feeling like the manager has gone away for the day so the staff all give up and noone wants to work or talk to their customers.

- staff in restuarant are helpful and chatty but so slow it's unbearable at times. Drinks arrive when you're already half way through your meal despite ordering them as soon as you arrive. To place orders you have to go wandering around and stand at the waiter's station to try and catch their attention - despite often being the only table in the place.

- only about 6 high chairs for the whole restuarant so at breakfast time they are fiercly sought after. For a family resort this was definitely an issue - and much talked about with parents. For the sake of $300 go buy an extra 10 from Ikea please!

- I'm not sure if its the case with all rooms, but we were in an upgraded 2 bedroom deluxe and EVERY SINGLE light switch, fan control, aircondition control and DOOR HANDLE was located ~1 metre from the ground - perfect for toddler's to constantly play with, open, turn on. The locks on the doors that go outside are useles and a quick turn unlocks the lock and opens the door. Where are the chain locks??? The buttons for every fan falls off in your hand when you operate them - a choking hazard if ever there was one (we ended up removing them all storing them in a bowl in the kitchen away from little fingers which got annoying when you wanted to change the speed of the fans).

Summary

All in all it's a great family resort, low cost and with great pools, play ground, grassed oval and waterplay. The restaurant is truly excellent both in terms of value and quality. If the staff perked up and the gardens were better kept it would be even better. I'd happily return. My last tip - given to us by our airport transfer driver when we arrived, there's a large stair case leading to reception - leave your suitcases down the bottom and go check in, someone will help take them to your room for you (avoid lugging them up the stairs as we saw many people do).

Room Tip: Talk to reception staff about what your needs and request a specific location based on their advice...
