“All round perfect stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 December 2008

We booked this 5 night stay on Wotif only 5 hours before we were due to fly out from Melbourne, we had trouble working out where we wanted to stay. We wanted to keep costs down by not having to buy cooked food all the time, and I wanted a reasonably close swimming area as I was heavily pregnant and feeling a bit shy.

The appartment was well equipt with cooling, full kitchen, tv with cable, and a lovely king (if a little hard) bed.

As others have stated, this is an apartment, self-contained. If you want fresh towels every day, and cleaning, don't come here. But the apartment was very neat and clean and modern on arriving. My tip to the Oaks would be, in addtion to the bath towels, provide a set of pool towels - these can be hired however.

I found the staff not over attentive, but willing to help - perfect for me, as I don't like having people clean under me, or usher me out so they can get their job done.

Overall it provided a perfect base to travel to all of the best destinations in Port Doug and beyond. My personal tip would be to travel between Oct-and December when it is reasonably quiet.

  • Liked — Swimout pool and location
  • Disliked — Needed more tea, coffee etc in the apartment and pool towels

Stayed at the resort for 6 nights and found it very good in almost all respects. I assume from some of the reviews here that people assume it is a hotel, it is actually a apartment resort.

We asked for (and got) a free room upgrade so we had a swim-out room and we were very happy with it. The staff were absolutely lovely for the whole stay.

If you book it knowing that the 'deal price' means that there isn't daily room servicing than I think you have nothing to complain about. The only down side is that there is no restaurant (which is typical of resorts like this) however the upside is that the apartment has everything you could need in it.

I would definitely stay here again.

I stayed at the Oaks Lagoons in a two bedroom swimout with 2 friends.
The swimout is the room you'll want to book. I don't think we would have enjoyed it as much with a regular room.
The room we had was more like a fully equipped apartment, with direct access into the pool. We had two bedrooms with spacious bathrooms with a shower, a living room and kitchen (with dishwasher and everything else), washer in a built-in closet, and another "study" room. We had two adjacent balconies with tables and chairs and lounge chairs. There is a fence to keep small children from falling into the pool.
The whole place was very clean. Do note that they do not clean the place every day. The pool was also clean and has a jacuzzi feature.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The only issue we had was that the shower heads in both bathrooms kept sliding down, but it was fixed as soon as we asked.

Oaks Lagoons is about 4km from the town, but the shuttle bus stops at the Mantra next door and takes you straight to Macrossan street for AUD7 for a return ticket or AUD4 for a single.
If you walk in the opposite direction of the town and take the first street to the left, there is an excellent restaurant called the Beach Shack.
For a great tour to Mosman Gorge, Daintree and Cape Tribulation, book Tony's Tours. Great guide, small groups (only 6 people including us), and the only tour that goes to the private world heritage site the Noah Valley.

  • Liked — The spacious, clean rooms and pool access
  • Disliked — The slippery floor (too clean?)

We stayed for a week with fablous weather. The Oaks is only a short walk to the quiet end of the beach.

While the Oaks Lagoon is fairly new it is starting to show signs of wear and tear.

Cleaning of the apartments is not great. For example, we found fingernails under the lounge! Lounge is not for sitting on.

The hotel suffers from not having a restaurant, particulalrly given the distance from any good places to eat. There is however a BBQ area near the pool, which is a good facility when you have kids. Our kids liked the pools which are kept clean.

One bad experience is that the fire alarm went off in very early morning and the management did not tell residents what to do or whether of not it was a false alarm.

Note that if you have bikes rented from some other place there are few convenient places to lock them up. Consider renting a bike from the Oaks and then you can store it in their shed.

I was up in Port Douglas for a conference and I didnt do the booking - I would much preferred to have paid the little bit extra and been at Le Mirage but we were stuck here and I was not happy with it at all, The place is fairly new and thats the only good thing about it. There is no porterage service, no dining room/restaurant, no mini bar AND not all the rooms are nicely placed with "private swimouts" or "plunge pools" - consider yourselves lucky those people who had such rooms. My room overlooked the entrance at the front and was just "TERRIBLE". The bed was not particularly nice and the pillows were pathetic. Housekeeping was a joke. We were here a week and I had to go down and demand that my room get cleaned and when it was finally attended to they left no soap, shampoo etc and only did minimal duties. I was extremely unhappy with this place conisidering what we paid for it and now just seeing how cheap the place actually is I am really mad that we stayed here!!!! The Oaks is not that good and I would never stay here again and would not recommend it. There are most assuredly nicer places in Port Douglas either better priced/better value or same price/better standard.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Oaks Lagoons. It was a little more luxurious and expensive that we had intended but on reflection a great place to stay.

LOCATION:
The location is a fair walk from the centre of Port Douglas and the Marina and at night the walk is very dark. (Lights are sensor operated so don't come on until you're underneath them - good energy efficiency but a little disconcerting!) The beach is only 5 mins walk from the resort and is a more pleasant walk to the town during daylight hours. There is a good restaurant and a few shops also about 10 mins walk away.

STAFF:
The staff were friendly and helpful. We needed a twin room but could only book a double on the internet, however, when we called the resort directly the manager was happy to make the room a twin and charge us the same discounted internet price. Staff could answer most queries about the resort and Port Douglas. However, there seemed a reluctance to contact the manager or head of housekeeping when we needed extra info or room cleaning. I'm not sure why as the manager was always extremely pleasant and helpful and readily available out of hours and on his night off. This gave the impression of being a bit disorganised (but this was staff - NOT management). As mentioned in another review, no staff were at the desk after 6pm at weekends or 10pm week nights. The solution for late check in is to access keys from the safe, the code for which is pinned beside it! I'm not sure that is totally secure!

CLEANLINESS:
Our apartment was hurriedly made available to us and we felt cleanliness was compromised as our room seemed un-hoovered. What was not made clear to us until the end of our first day and too late to be rectified, was that part of getting our twin room at a low price meant we would get no cleaning for our 4 night stay! We had to complain as we had sugar ants (very common) in our room, of which we had informed them on arrival, and so cleaning was a must. The following day, only our towels were changed and our beds made. We had to ask / complain another twice before anything happened to remedy this. For some reason, communication didn't quite work between reception and housekeeping so in the end we called the manager who got it fixed ASAP. This delay seemed unnecessary and gave the impression that it was badly run, which it wasn't.

  • Liked — The manager, Johnny, (and his amazing biker boots!)
  • Disliked — Unecessary cutting corners / cumbersome communication

We had a comfortable 2 bed + study apartment that easily contained our family of 5 (2 adults + 3 teens). The beds were good. We were on the 3rd (top) floor and it was very quiet. Well enough equipped to cook simple meals and the pools were good. However the reason I booked this place over the many others of a similar style was because on wotif it said it had a heated pool. As we were there mid winter I thought that might be a bonus. However that's not the case - not that it's the resorts fault though... the water was warm enough to swim in on a sunny day anyway.
Like many of the resorts in Port Douglas, Lagoons is a bit of a drive to town so if you want to have a drink with dinner in town then you'll need to catch the bus which runs regularly from some resorts.
