“Absolutely loved it!!!”
Reviewed 16 August 2007

We've just returned from five nights at this wonderful B&B located in a beautiful and quiet setting in Port Douglas. I can't say enough about the hosts, Frieda and Colin. They were so friendly and helpful, and genuinely care about pleasing their guests. It was so nice to come in after a long day of sightseeing and have a glass of wine with Frieda and Colin in their beautiful garden setting. We really left feeling as though we'd just made some great new friends!

Frieda's breakfasts were always so thoughtfully prepared and presented. She goes out of her way to provide a variety of local fruits and makes sure to explain what they are. I know we must have eaten delicious fruits that most people in the world have never even heard of. Our schedule was irregular each day, but that was never a problem and our breakfast was always ready at the time we requested.

We had our 14-yr-old son with us, and so we had two rooms for a very reasonable rate. He loved having his own space and was really excited about seeing the huge green tree frogs who live there. The gardens are exquisite and the loving care they receive really shows.

Staying at Four Mile Beach B&B was a great experience, and we would definitely recommend it to anyone. Can't wait to visit again!

I booked at the Port Douglas B&B Four Mile Beach after reading a previous TripAdvisor review, and I'm really glad that I did. We had a wonderful stay here.

Our room was $130/night for two people, exceptionally spacious (like a studio), and nicely appointed. It had a private entry, a refrigerator, facilities for making tea and coffee, and a big bookcase with assorted paperback books. The vases with tropical flowers were another nice touch. Reef snorkellers/divers take note: you don't need to pack your own beach towels because two beach towels are provided in your room to borrow for reef trips (in addition to the standard complement of bath towels).

The rooms open out onto a courtyard with a small pool surrounded by a beautifully-maintained tropical garden. The pictures on the B&B website don't do it justice--the grounds are really quite lovely. There is a poolside cabana with a candlelit dining table where you can relax and enjoy the complimentary glass of wine served by your hosts when you check in. The cabana is well-sheltered, so you'll be dry and comfortable there, even on the warm, rainy nights that you sometimes encounter in the tropics. You're even welcome to bring a takeaway meal back to the B&B and dine poolside.

Breakfast is also served by the pool. It consists of generous amounts of juice, tea, coffee, toast, crumpets, bagels, jam, yoghurt, muesli, and honey. Best of all, it also includes a huge and bewildering assortment of locally-grown tropical fruits, several of which I'd never eaten before. Everything was delicious!

Don't be surprised to see some little critters and bugs around the grounds. We saw a tree frog and a couple of geckos. There were a few ants and mosquitoes, too, so dab on a bit of insect repellent before dining by the pool so they won't be a bother.

The B&B is in a quiet residential neighborhood bordered by coastal forest. The courtyard wall and garden plants screen the guest wing from the neighboring houses, providing privacy. The B&B is a one-minute stroll from Four Mile Beach. (Don't check out without seeing this gorgeous beach!) The Beach Shack, a laid-back restaurant with beach sand in the dining patio, is just a few minutes' walk away. More restaurants and shops can be found in the main Port Douglas tourist strip, a few minutes' drive from the B&B.

The hosts, Frieda and Colin, are friendly and knowledgeable. You can engage them in friendly chat (ask about their interesting life stories), or you can have your space and privacy--either way, they are sensitive to your wishes. They are helpful and will suggest restaurants, tours, and things to do that suit your interests, without being pushy. When we mentioned that we were having dinner at a certain restaurant or going on a certain tour, they would offer to book us at the restaurant or phone to confirm our booking with the tour operator--I really appreciated getting this level of service from them. They also have a collection of books in the courtyard about local attractions, travel guidebooks, and field guides of local animals and plants, which you can peruse at any time to help plan your travels.

Overall, I had a great experience at this B&B and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others.

When we arrived in the dark with the bus from Cairns, Frieda greeted us at the street and took our little boys hand, guiding him in. She showed us our beautiful room with ensuite bathroom and then we sat with her outside in the wonderful garden next to the pool. She offered us drinks and nibbles which were never put on any bill and we just sat and chatted as if we had arrived at a friends place. After a good nights sleep in the comfortable bed we got up to a fantastic breakfast with lots of tropical fruit, homemade joghurt, various cereals, bread... everything we liked was there. Frieda was very helpful with hints on what to do and how to get around but also gave us room to be on our own. We went away to Low Isles for some days and came back to stay with Frieda and Collin who surprised us by picking our luggage up from the boat so that we could travel light
by bus. During our stay we enjoyed the pool, the comfortable room with attention to detail, the wonderful breakfast but most of all the warm friendliness of our hosts. We would always go back!
