My husband and I and our two teenage kids had five glorious nights in Port Douglas Beach Villa and we knew we'd made the right choice the minute we walked in the door after a long and arduous day of travel. Rather than being a sterile 'could-be-anywhere' apartment, this quirky villa feels like someone's home. Its design is very clever, allowing everyone space to get away yet not be shut away - an airy and sunny house that is a pleasure to be in during the day. Sofia, the site manager, was so lovely and helpful from start to finish, and the extras she provided - from toiletries to basic cooking and washing supplies - made life very easy (why don't more accommodation providers do this to save holidaymakers having to buy what later has to be thrown away only partially used?). Extra beach hats, beach towels and beach chairs were put to good use, as were the board games, bbq and spa bath. Away from the hubbub of downtown Macrossen Street, the villa is across the road from 4 Mile Beach via the Port sailing club - you can hear the sea from bed at night, the sun streams into the mezzanine main bedroom in the morning, the sunbirds feed at blossoms on the balcony, and with the roof rolled back the pool gets the sun in the afternoon when the sheoaks start shading the beach. Bliss. The walk into town along the beach - about 30 minutes - meant lunch at the Surf Club was well deserved - definitely worth a visit for the fish tacos! And we were sad to miss out on The Beach Shack around the corner from the villa recommended by Sofia - full when we tried to book. This is Port Douglas as we remember it from a decade-plus ago - peaceful, private and part of a local community.
