“great layout for a hostel!!”
Reviewed 26 March 2013 via mobile

Ok so in terms of layout, this hostel ranks pretty high compared to all the others I have stayed at. It says you share an 8 bed dorm but it doesn't really give it justice because you actually have a kinda apartment area with your own kitchen and bathroom shared with only 8 people and then two bedrooms, so you are actually only sharing a room with 4 other people! Really great if you are exhausted from driving up the east coast in a few days! The rooms do get extremely hot though, just a warning! And the fans are pretty pathetic, but at least it makes you get up early to enjoy Surfers Paradise (which isn't paradise by the way) if that's the type of thing you're into. We were just happy to get up early so we could get out of the place to be honest. Not the hostel, SP.

They have a lovely pool here, a pool table and some great common areas. They are quite focused on the party aspect, playing fun drinking games etc but it is situated in Surfers Paradise so I don't know how any of the hostels can't be focused on the arty aspect as it seems like the way of life out there.

Most of the staff are really friendly and lovely. And they also have meet and greets most evenings where they have a Barbie or get pizza in etc which is nice to be a part of.

Anyway, the main thing is the great layout and nice pool (both table and swimming varieties).

Before anyone thinks this review is unfair, let me start by saying that the hostel's facilities were actually pretty nice, and that the rooms were perfectly clean. That's not the problem with this place. The problem with Sleeping Inn is that it is absolutely NOT safe!!! Please don't stay here, and if you do, do not leave your valuables unatended.

My boyfriend and I were put in an apartment (completely away from the actual hostel) by ourselves, and didn't know that the back door to the garden wasn't locked. Because it could be opened, a man was able to break in at night and came right into our bedroom while we were in it! Luckily he ran away when he saw us, but it could have been so much worse. If the hostel had simple security measures put in place (eg. checking that the doors work, cctv or actually just having staff on at night) our situation could have been easily avoided. As it was, we were completely on our own when it happened. It was about midnight, and unfortunately for us, they have NO night staff on. There was one guy working til 3am, but he was completely useless and had only been working there for a few days and had been untrained in what to do. He simply laughed when we told him and said there was nothing he could do to help. We had to tell the police ourselves.

As it turns out, we are not the only people this has happened to - robberys here are common, as several backpackers and staff told us of similar instances where people came in through windows etc that could not be locked. When I spoke to the police about it, they were actually on the hunt for someone in that very street, and told me that it was a very dodgy area where a lot of criminals lived and operated. Backpackers are robbed here ALL THE TIME.

I can't believe that in such an unsafe area, the hostel do NOTHING to protect their guests. The main hostel has cctv, but if you are put in any of the other apartments you are left to fend for yourselves and it is NOT a nice feeling!

In addition to this, the staff are just awful. Really, really rude and unwelcoming. They were hungover all the time and couldn't be bothered to talk to you unless you were there to drink with them (which we would have done if they were nice!!). The worst thing is that TWICE during our 4 day stay, they left our bedroom door open, and considering what happened to us, this is obviously completely unsafe and just plain stupid.

I have to give some credit to the manager - she was very nice and kind to us after our break in (although she only came the next day). If I was her, I would concentrate on improving security and hiring a staff that actually give a damn about their guests, not just 18 year olds looking to party and work a couple of hours for free accommodation.....

Also, we saw a lot of fighting between the staff which was really unprofessional.

We've travelled all over the world and this was by far the WORST stay of our lives.

One of the most important factors in staying at a hostel is the level of service provided. Sleeping Inn excelled and and I really salute the backpackers working there for accommodation as they definitely went above and beyond.
First of all when I arrived at the transit station in Surfers the info desk called the hostel to book a pick up, literally 3 minutes later two English girls were there for me in the shuttle car. Without even asking, they grabbed my luggage and stuck it in the limo style shuttle. They were friendly and even after I checked in they took my luggage again and took me to my room. Small things like that really do make the difference.

The hostel itself is divided into mini apartments with two bedrooms to a bathroom, an extra toilet and a lounge kitchen. It was fairly clean, did need a bit of updating and was stuffy at night in the bedrooms as they were small with no aircon.

The receptionists were informational, the pool was small, and there's a seperate TV/pool room.

I would definitely return to Sleeping Inn if I go back to Surfers.

Nice hostel. Clean and tidy. Room area little warm though with out any air con, only a standing fan. But shower etc is clean and you get like a small apartment to share. They do good food deals. Location is t right in town but it's about a 5-10 min walk which i liked.

We weren't expecting or wanting a quiet time in Surfers but some people take it too far. There was a rugby team on tour from NZ staying in the room next door and they didn't sleep the entire time we were there. Noisy, smelly, and annoying!!
However, it was OK here, nice friendly and helpful staff, free internet, good location, close to the centre.
The rooms were OK, small and cramped, but it had a decent bathroom, and its own kitchen so we could keep our wine chilled :)
Not too bad, just a tad noisy thanks to our neighbours.

There are 2 hostels very near, in these you can find more party and noise, but no so good rooms, installations, broken sofas. Something good is that you can take you drinks to de room, you have your own refrigerator and kitchen, but we stay one night there and then we move to an other one thats it's very near, i recomended more, see my other review

Room Tip: anyone all very similar
