“A pleasant hostel with friendly staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2013 via mobile

I arrived at this hostel having had my luggage put on the wrong flight, so I was quite upset as everything that I was travelling with could be lost. However the reception staff were very comforting and friendly, taking me to my room and telling me that everything would be alright and that it would get sorted. The room was small but being a backpacker I wasn't too bothered as the beds were alright. There was a kitchen and a bathroom in the room, but there could have been more utensils and pans to cook with as well as a larger fridge as it didn't hold all the food for 8 people. There was free wifi in the main reception area, and a common room with a pool table and a large tv with a hard drive full of movies. There was also a travel desk for you to book trips and the held weekly pub crawls and all you can eat BBQ's.
I nice backpackers hostel that loved to party but wasn't too noisy in the process.

Hi there
Thank you very much for your lovely review. I need to say with great appreciation that reviews like yours help making our hostel better. We have checked the kitchen in the room you were in after you left us your review and we have restocked the room with more kitchen utensils. There is always a large number of crockery and cutlery around the place. It just sometimes gets moved by our guests to cook together in the different kitchens we have.
We wish you all the best for the rest of your travels and hope to see you again one day :)

We stayed a few nights last March in a 4-bed dormitory.
Great location (only 5 min to Surfers Paradise centre). Backpacker located in a quiet area with 3-4 car park spaces.
Staff is very friendly and always willing to help. They also have a travel desk so you can book cheaper park tickets or other activities.

Dorms are organized in units. Each unit has bedrooms from 2 to 10 beds. Each unit has its own kitchen, living room and bathroom/toilet. Comfortable common areas and fully furnished kitchen. TV is very old and bad.
Not very safe as there is no locker available in the room. You can store valuable items at the reception for 3 AUD$.
Bathroom is small but ok. Ceiling fan was extremely dusty and needed a clean. There is no hook to hang clothes or towels. No soap available.
Only two electric plugs per room (one already taken by the standing fan).

They organized 5 AUD$ all-you-can eat BBQ around the pool which is worth it and daily pool movie nights with video projector at 6.30pm which is quite unique.
TV room is great with games, snooker and computers for hire.
WIFI is free of charge but has low coverage.
Towels are not included (compared to what is advertised).

To sum up, good location, good atmosphere and friendly staff.
I wouldn’t recommend this place for couples looking for quiet nights as it’s more of a party place (as well as Surfers Paradise).

Hi there

thank you very much for your good review.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and it is always great to hear our guests thoughts

Unfortunately I need to correct two things you said which are just NOT true. We do have towels for rent completely free of charge of course. I dont know where you got the information from but our locker hire at reception is 100% for free too and not $3 as mentioned above.

I wish you all the best for the rest of your travels through Australia. Sleeping In Management

Brilliant hostel, rooms are great. Its like you have your own apartment with kitchen and bathroom in the room, and the place is spotless. Staff were so friendly and accommodating. I would definitely recommend this hostel, it is by far the best we have stayed in and we have been travelling now throughout Australia the last 5 months, we are going to go back there:) Brilliant people, staff, atmosphere and Surfers is great.

Found this place on recommendation from a friend and he wasn't wrong.
Staff went out of there way to be helpful, from advising on tours and activities, to arranging party nights.....and they really were party nights! Do us travellers really rate hostels on the amount and quality of sleep?
Will def go back there after our trip up north.

Room Tip: Dorms are actually apartments....really good.

Ok so in terms of layout, this hostel ranks pretty high compared to all the others I have stayed at. It says you share an 8 bed dorm but it doesn't really give it justice because you actually have a kinda apartment area with your own kitchen and bathroom shared with only 8 people and then two bedrooms, so you are actually only sharing a room with 4 other people! Really great if you are exhausted from driving up the east coast in a few days! The rooms do get extremely hot though, just a warning! And the fans are pretty pathetic, but at least it makes you get up early to enjoy Surfers Paradise (which isn't paradise by the way) if that's the type of thing you're into. We were just happy to get up early so we could get out of the place to be honest. Not the hostel, SP.

They have a lovely pool here, a pool table and some great common areas. They are quite focused on the party aspect, playing fun drinking games etc but it is situated in Surfers Paradise so I don't know how any of the hostels can't be focused on the arty aspect as it seems like the way of life out there.

Most of the staff are really friendly and lovely. And they also have meet and greets most evenings where they have a Barbie or get pizza in etc which is nice to be a part of.

Anyway, the main thing is the great layout and nice pool (both table and swimming varieties).

Before anyone thinks this review is unfair, let me start by saying that the hostel's facilities were actually pretty nice, and that the rooms were perfectly clean. That's not the problem with this place. The problem with Sleeping Inn is that it is absolutely NOT safe!!! Please don't stay here, and if you do, do not leave your valuables unatended.

My boyfriend and I were put in an apartment (completely away from the actual hostel) by ourselves, and didn't know that the back door to the garden wasn't locked. Because it could be opened, a man was able to break in at night and came right into our bedroom while we were in it! Luckily he ran away when he saw us, but it could have been so much worse. If the hostel had simple security measures put in place (eg. checking that the doors work, cctv or actually just having staff on at night) our situation could have been easily avoided. As it was, we were completely on our own when it happened. It was about midnight, and unfortunately for us, they have NO night staff on. There was one guy working til 3am, but he was completely useless and had only been working there for a few days and had been untrained in what to do. He simply laughed when we told him and said there was nothing he could do to help. We had to tell the police ourselves.

As it turns out, we are not the only people this has happened to - robberys here are common, as several backpackers and staff told us of similar instances where people came in through windows etc that could not be locked. When I spoke to the police about it, they were actually on the hunt for someone in that very street, and told me that it was a very dodgy area where a lot of criminals lived and operated. Backpackers are robbed here ALL THE TIME.

I can't believe that in such an unsafe area, the hostel do NOTHING to protect their guests. The main hostel has cctv, but if you are put in any of the other apartments you are left to fend for yourselves and it is NOT a nice feeling!

In addition to this, the staff are just awful. Really, really rude and unwelcoming. They were hungover all the time and couldn't be bothered to talk to you unless you were there to drink with them (which we would have done if they were nice!!). The worst thing is that TWICE during our 4 day stay, they left our bedroom door open, and considering what happened to us, this is obviously completely unsafe and just plain stupid.

I have to give some credit to the manager - she was very nice and kind to us after our break in (although she only came the next day). If I was her, I would concentrate on improving security and hiring a staff that actually give a damn about their guests, not just 18 year olds looking to party and work a couple of hours for free accommodation.....

Also, we saw a lot of fighting between the staff which was really unprofessional.

We've travelled all over the world and this was by far the WORST stay of our lives.

Room Tip: check your windows and doors

One of the most important factors in staying at a hostel is the level of service provided. Sleeping Inn excelled and and I really salute the backpackers working there for accommodation as they definitely went above and beyond.
First of all when I arrived at the transit station in Surfers the info desk called the hostel to book a pick up, literally 3 minutes later two English girls were there for me in the shuttle car. Without even asking, they grabbed my luggage and stuck it in the limo style shuttle. They were friendly and even after I checked in they took my luggage again and took me to my room. Small things like that really do make the difference.

The hostel itself is divided into mini apartments with two bedrooms to a bathroom, an extra toilet and a lounge kitchen. It was fairly clean, did need a bit of updating and was stuffy at night in the bedrooms as they were small with no aircon.

The receptionists were informational, the pool was small, and there's a seperate TV/pool room.

I would definitely return to Sleeping Inn if I go back to Surfers.
