Surfers Riverside Apartments
Reviewed 12 January 2014

We arrived at approximately 2.10pm on the Sunday (5/1/2014). Reception was not open!!! The phone just before the gate was very hard to get working and when it did we had to leave a message for management to find out how do we get in. Guess what: there was no answer: 3 times we tried. We were fortunate that the old manager was driving out of the garage and saw we were standing there like idiots. The key was in the little locked box. We would have still been standing there if she didn't come along.
We walked up the stairs excited of course only to be greeted by a disgusting smell when we opened the door. My heart sank! We paid for a deluxe apartment which we got but it was a disgrace. Vertical blinds were missing, the floors/carpets were filthy, kitchen cupboards smelt when you opened them. The balcony was dirty and on the little table was an astray; which was home to 10 cigarette butts. The shower in the main bedroom had mould growing so I decided to wear thongs in the shower. The tracks for the windows were caked in dirt & grime, there were holes in the walls which were also severely marked by dirty grubby hands. To top it of the couch smelt and looked yukky and when you lifted the cushions up, there was food underneath mixed with lots of dirt.
The family decided to go for a swim. The pool looked inviting but as you walked toward the area it was a filthy mess. The garbage bin was over flowing with rubbish, a pair of shoes were left behind, cigarette butts on the ground, alcohol bottles and the smell of stale alcohol was putrid. We decided to cook breakfast before we went to Wet 'n' Wild, on the Monday morning only to find the frypan was still dirty and there was no egg lifter. Also one of the hotplates was not working when we tried to hurry things along.
The advertisement of this holiday apartment for me was misleading. I wasn't expecting the world and to have champagne waiting however I was expecting to start our small holiday with a good, clean well maintained apartment.

Didn't get off to a good start when we arrived late and realised the extra bed we ordered hadn't been provided. One guest had to sleep on the couch for the first night & the extra we paid for the bed was not refunded.

There were marks all over the walls & the air-conditioning did not work. There was also a bad smell in the apartment.

The furniture was cheap and uncomfortable. One of the beds gave way while one (60kg) girl was laying on it. We rang management straight away and told them what happened. We requested a new bed or to be moved. They didn't arrive until 7.30pm that night to move us but we had to leave to go to a concert. So we had to come back and sleep on the broken bed.

The next day when we checked out they told us we were going to be charged $200 for the bed! We argued the point for about half an hour but they wouldn't budge.

Positives were that it was cheap, had two bathrooms and a nice kitchen. Close to Surfers. But it was probably the worst customer service experience I've had with the bed situation. Would definitely warn against staying at these apartments.

The staff was very friendly and helpful.Rate was very reasonable compared to many other apartments. We had a beautiful view. The location was great!

The good: Price per night (about $100), location 5 min to Cavill, 10 min to beach.

The bad: We had tons of luggage, and had to drag it all up one long flight of stairs to reception, then across the length of the complex, down a short flight, then up 3 flights to the room on 2nd floor. No offer of assistance from reception, and no trolley.

Happy for view of canal, but can be noisy if pool is in use.

Pool was supposed to be warm, but was cold (22-23C) for first 3 days. Told that happens on occasion. Later warmed up to 27-28C for rest of stay.

We got the same room as FarmerChick28 (March 22nd, 2013 posting here). We too had a bucketfull of broken glass in the bathroom. Makes me think it was there for 5 months!

Big stain in middle of living room carpet. Painted not too long ago, but whoever did it must have been the lowest bidder or an amateur and did a pretty poor job. Main bedroom is small and there is no dresser, just a couple nightstands. One drawer of the nightstand fell apart when we tried to open it. A couple small drawers in the closet. There is no door to the en suite toilet, so privacy is limited and you better be used to "openess" with your partner or otherwise ask them to leave bedroom when in the toilet. No dresser, just a couple tiny drawers in the closet. Faucet was leaking when we arrived. Second bedroom is just big enough for the bunkbed, that's it. The bed itself scared my kids as it was not stable (loose bolts) so they slept on the couches for the first couple nights until it was repaired. Kitchen fridge was old and had a grinding sound coming from it (compressor perhaps). TV was small, much smaller than some on the ground floor.

Second shower is nice to have, but is really tiny.

Reception is usually locked, even during the day. The guy may be around but you need to call.

We booked a long stay and paid almost $2000, but when we shortened it by a day they refused a refund, even though I requested it 3 weeks in advance and was told "no worries". Later I was told I should have gone through Expedia.au, although Expedia.au said it was totally up to the hotel as to whether to give a refund or not.

Budget family apartments good walking distance to beach and all shops. The apartments have all the basic essentials, however kitchen utensils need to be restocked very hard to cook with limited utensils.
Down side is the stairs, we rang 7 days prior to arriving to request ground floor apartment due to partners health. I was told this would be okay, however it was not so. We were offered the opportunity to move 2 days later however it was just to hard to pack and move. This caused inconvenience as the stairs were a huge obstacle.
We have been told to ask for apartment 2 or 6 when we come again. Overall very happy with stay.

Room Tip: Riverview on the lower floors, stay away from apartments15 and 16.

Thank you for the review of your recent stay.
We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and love that you will come and stay with us again.
You do have a valid point about the stairs. Whilst Surfers Riverside is a lovely holiday complex, it is a 3 story 'walk up' without any elevators so it is not particularly 'disabled friendly'.
We hope that wasn't too much of a hindrance to the enjoyment of your stay.
Kindest Regards,
Brendon

I was really happy with my choice to stay here whilst I was visiting the Gold Coast for my son's sporting events. The apartment was better than I expected, modern, clean and very comfortable. The pool was fantastic and warm which is always great in winter. It is super relaxing to lay by the pool by the river and we even threw a line in off the jetty which was novel. It is less than a 5 min walk to cavill ave which was great for us, and would not have felt safe walking any further. The RSL club is really close as well which is nice for dinner. I found driving in and out of there super easy, I had commitments at both ends of the Gold Coast (burleigh and runaway bay) and I found the commute easy from this location, it's and easy street to get in and out of, especially with all the roadworks elsewhere. It's a 5 min drive to pacific fair as well which was handy. The parking is easy and secure which was also great if you have a car. The staff were helpful and attentive. The housekeeping could probably be more thorough, which is probably nit picking at best. It's not super quiet because it is a high density area (expected). I had a top floor unit which was quite a few flights of stairs from the carpark with your bags, so if you have mobility issues this might bother you as well. Otherwise, for the price I paid, there is no way I could have done better than this little gem, I'd recommend it, but you need to know it's a serviced apartment, not a hotel, so you need to provide a few things for yourself (like dish tabs) as you only get a starter pack which I thought was perfectly appropriate for the price. I'll stay again for sure.

What a little gem if a place,
We absolutely lived it and will definately be back the next time we come to the Gold Coast.
Surfers riverside offers great value for money when we compare it to other complexes around surfers- and as regular visitors to surfers we know the place pretty well!
The apartment we stayed in was perfectly clean and very well maintained- these are the two most important things to me and so many apartment complexes in surfers are greatly lacking in these departments!
The location is just right- really close to town but still pretty quiet as well.
The price is also really good- we booked on their website and got 2 nights for free.
Definately will be back again

Room Tip: You can get 2 nights for free if you book on their website
