“Beautiful and friendly!!”
Reviewed 19 July 2009

My 6-year old son and I loved our 5 day stay at the Marriott in Surfers. I am a pretty picky traveller and I enjoyed almost everything about this hotel. The Benihana on the 3rd floor was excellent and the activities desk was very helpful. The only problem I had with the hotel was that there was often a lengthy wait for the elevators. Will definitely stay here again if we come back to surfers.

We stayed at this hotel for 6 nights end of April. We had pre-booked a transport from Coolangata airport but really didn’t expect an expansive limo pick-up. The check-in was fairly smooth. However, we had to change rooms as the first non-smoking room badly stung of cigarette smoke. The reception staff were polite and very helpful. Our new room was lovely and had a better view. In addition, there were 2 scented pouches on our bed. The décor was pretty basic and looked a touch out of date. The room was on the 26th floor and had a view over the beach, over the city and over the waterways. You could still hear the traffic noise even up high but we didn’t mind it and slept with a balcony door open.

We had breakfast at the hotel and liked the choice of both cold and hot food. On a Saturday night we went for dinner to Benihana Japanese restaurant on the 3rd floor. The teppanyaki chicken and seafood were delicious but quite pricey. There are lots of restaurants nearby in the centre of Surfers Paradise. I can recommend Hard Rock Café, Sushi Train and Kamikaze.

I have to comment on the very friendly staff. Everybody was great and always happy to chat about just anything. The guys at the Concierge desk got a great deal for us for a car rental with Avis and provided some good tips on what to do and where to go by car, e.g. Gold Coast Hinterland.

The gym was small and basic but functional. The outdoor lagoon/pool were lovely but there always seemed to be a problem finding a free lounger.

Overall, we had great time and would stay here again.

Lets start with the positive: the staff and food were faultless ! We also loved the gardens and pools. The rooms with tiny balconies are ok (no flatscreen TV) and offered great views. The hotel is located very close to the beach. The overall design and style of the hotel is nice but the lobby feels like a transit hall and does not invite to sit down and relax. The furniture is arranged in a weird way and the condition of it, particularly in the lounge bar, is "past the useby date". Lets not talk about the dirty windows and the window seals hanging off. Either there are no funds to upgrade or the maintenance management is bad. The other thing that irritated us was, that patrons were allowed to enter lobby and lounge bar "barfeet" and even in their swimgear. We observed this not only during the day but also in the late evening. Car access to the basement garage is not controlled and I suspect that many non resident guests just walk in and use the facilities.

Overall: beautiful hotel with excellent staff who go out of their way to make sure their patrons are happy. Good location

Location: the hotel is located about 5 minutes walk from the beach (beautiful) and shopping complexes:

Service: the service was exquisite. The staff treated us like royalty. Our daughter was sick on the trip and the staff organised a doctor to come through and followed up to see how our daughter felt.

Rooms: the rooms were clean and modern. They were above average in terms of luxury, but not the most luxurious rooms we have stayed in.

Amenities: excellent facilities - mand-made beach, beautiful pool, great gym. The hotel also has an exquisite restaurant which serves a to-die-for seafood/general buffet.

I booked a weekend at the Marriott to celebrate my birthday. I had stayed there before and seemed to remember that it was a good hotel, perhaps the best place to stay in Surfers Paradise. Unfortunately, the poor quality of the bed ruined what was otherwise a great weekend.

The hotel does have a lot of good points but if the bed is not comfortable then it is not really doing its job as a hotel ie a place to sleep.

The pool area is beautifully designed and you could be forgiven for not going to the beach. Some of the pools are heated so you can still swim in Autumn.

The gym has a decent number of treadmills and weight machines. People actually use it. I've been to other hotels where the gym is of such poor quality that you look at it but never use it.

The spa, attached to the hotel, is also worth a visit. Apparently you have to pay $15 pp to use the spa and sauna if you're not getting a treatment. We agreed to pay this but they never charged us. I didn't object to the charge as they provide good quality facilities, have robes, towels, toiletries etc. One might argue that they shouldn't be imposing a charge but if it keeps the spa exclusive and relatively quiet i don't mind.

The restaurants are both quite good. The teppanyaki restaurant is definitely worth a visit as the seafood used is top quality. The new sake bar in the restaurant is a nice touch and worth stopping at before dinner. The buffet restaurant offers a good buffet with plenty of variety. The a la carte menu is less than inspiring but the food is good quality.

If you're staying on a busy weekend I would suggest an upgrade to the Elandra Retreat. I didn't do this but regretted it on Sunday morning when there was a 20 minute wait for a table at breakfast. The staff at this restaurant are very obliging and go out of their way to keep you happy. I felt sorry for one staff member who was working flat out at the omelette station. There were a few people waiting and she had 3 omelettes on the go. One customer asked for the omelette to be only lightly cooked. When it wasn't she made the chef cook it again. The chef's restraint in this situation was admirable.

The standard room is spacious. The chair and ottoman are not particularly comfortable and too upright for lounging. The TV is CRT and the picture is quite fuzzy when you're used to flatscreen and LCD. The bathroom is large with separate bath and shower.

The bed, however, was just not comfortable. We couldn't sleep properly both nights we stayed. Only two months ago I toured Australia staying at all different sorts of places none of which were 5 star or as expensive as the Marriott. They all had better beds and I had no problems sleeping. Unlike the Marriotts in Sydney and Melbourne this one does not have Revive Bedding.

In summary a good hotel but not great. This is my opinion as a person from Brisbane who doesn't have kids. The hotel is really targetted at tourists and/or families so I'm not really the kind of customer they are trying to serve. Despite this, the poor quality bed is unforgivable. I would only stay here for one night, to enjoy the restaurants, and then go home to sleep in a proper bed.
