“Great stay in Surfers Paradise”
Reviewed 5 July 2014 via mobile

Not only is the Outrigger a good location in Surfers Paradise, but the hotel itself made for a nice stay. The large lobby is welcoming and situated just off of the Esplanade. The staff (concierge and front desk) were knowledgable, polite, and helpful. The rooms were modern and clean, and the balconies provided amazing views of the city and the sea. One of the hotel highlights is the breakfast which is large enough to cater to any taste. We enjoyed our four day stay very much and I would certainly come back.

After reading a few unfavorable reviews on TA about this hotel leading up to our stay which made me a bit nervous, however we had a really good stay at the Outrigger.

We were on the Gold Coast for the a GC Marathon event and stayed there the Friday night. While you can tell it's an older building, the lobby and our room were very well fit out. The mirrored wall and window through to the bathroom were nice design additions. We were on the floor with a view over the city and ocean and if it weren't winter we would have spent more time on the balcony. The beds were comfortable and there was plenty of room in the bathroom.

The staff kindly called us the day prior to advise that there would be a traffic in the area because of the marathon and that their carpark lift was out of action. There was a little bit of confusion with the staff in the carpark but this was worked through quickly.

The shower takes a bit of tinkering to get the right pressure and temperature (it was an all or nothing kinda shower head) but not a major concern.

The staff were lovely and we were provided with details on how to check out 'express' as well as a 2-4-1 breakfast voucher, we didn't use it but it was appreciated.

Overall a good location with a very comfortable room.

Some issues first:
The television was disappointing - small in size, the reception on the channels was not the best and - important to the tech-inclined - you are not allowed to plug a secondary device in (gaming console, etc), lest you pay a $35 "reset" fee to get the in-room entertainment working again.

Bring a laptop with a decent-size screen, or a mini-projector if you want your own selection of entertainment.

We also no end of issues with the wifi.

The wifi is provided by a third-party provider (Movielink), and delivers wifi to the rooms via a redirect page...which would be fine if it worked. We tried on three different devices to connect, and all would return an error (despite showing a full signal from the Outrigger hotspot).

Two different hotel staff came to check on the room equipment, with no result. One staff member called Movielink on our behalf - who then contacted us and tried to do some basic troubleshooting, with no luck.

Eventually, we were told to come down to the lobby (where we could get the redirect page without issue) - once connected in the lobby (via a free pass), we were able to access the internet in the room (though it took a long time to connect each time - and did stop working at a couple of random points).

I felt the pool area looked tired, but I understand there is going to be a refurbishment.

To the good points:
Check-in was easy, and the desk staff were polite.

The ocean view (17th floor) was amazing - and there was no disruptive noise from the tram (though some screams from the Slingshot/Vomatron attraction across the road).

There were adequate room supplies (towels, tea/coffee etc), along with a small sheet of vouchers for hotel services.

The walk up to Cavill Ave is short enough - and the convenience of the closer stores should not be discounted, among those is a 6am-midnight chemist, and a Coles in the Chevron just across the street.

The beach is only one block away.

All in all, it's likely we would stay again.

Don't be fooled by the signs when you leave the car park late at night. Take the lift to access the entrance to the lobby after 10pm and even though the sign on the door says that between 9:30pm and 5am the doors can be opened by using your swipe card, that is not the case. After trying and trying and nothing happening, I managed to find my way out onto the street and then walked around the corner to the front door to enquire at the reception counter only to be told that you cannot enter that way after 10pm as the door is locked. So I had to go and tell my family that they too would have to walk outside in the cold and wet to access the front of the hotel. You apparently can also walk down the steep ramp from the car park out into the open air to access the front of the hotel. Only disappointment on an otherwise good stay. Coat of paint on the exterior door jambs would make it look more classy. Dust and cobwebs in some corners near the lifts could do with a clean to make it look more inviting. Bed comfortable, view spectacular, room quite pleasant.

This location was booked through a 'specials deal' and although the property itself is good the restaurant lacked excitement. Cafeteria style tables and chairs, a good selection of buffet offered but too expensive.
Staff were helpfull and friendly.
The bed was very comfortable and serviced nicely, we stayed five nights.
Easy walk to Cavill Mall and food outlets for good food and very reasonable prices..

Dear Wisky4,
Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay at the Outrigger Surfers Paradise. I am sorry the Hotel did not meet your expectations in terms of food pricing, however I also wanted to let you know that from July, we have lowered the price of most of our menu items as well as introduced a few new dishes, in order to meet our customer needs.
I am pleased to hear regarding the friendliness of the staff, and your other positive comments on the comfort of the bed and the location of the Hotel.
Wisky4, I hope we have the pleasure of welcoming you back on your next visit to Surfers Paradise.
Kind Regards

The location of the hotel and even the entrance suggest this will be a premier stay but sadly after that it was mostly a let down. The rooms are tired and need of an upgrade, the facilities old and uninviting. The most disappointing part of my stay however was the attitude of the staff, except the person who checked me in, she was helpful. I am used to staying in hotels where there is leniency with the check-out (especially if I have only checked in the evening before) and I did not expect to be called in the morning to ask if I was checking out. This was quickly followed by somebody at the door also asking me if I was checking-out! This would not make anybody feel welcome. The other thing to observe is the age demographic of the guests, who clearly are intent on enjoying themselves well into the night, often in the corridor of the hotel. Perhaps it would be worth advising who you are aiming at?

Dear Robyn,
Thank you for your comments on your recent stay at the Outrigger Surfers Paradise, and I am sorry we did not meet your expectations in regards to the condition of the Hotel but more particularly in relation to your interaction with our staff. Regarding the condition of the Hotel, we are in the process of a property renovation with the majority of the rooms, corridors and hallways complete. On your stay, the room you occupied and the hallway had not been retouched. I hope that should you choose to revisit the property, you will notice the difference. However it is your comment on feeling rushed that I will address with the staff concerned.Unfortunately the day you were checking out, we were fully booked with arriving Guests, but I accept your point of staff not rushing our Guests, and again I thank you for the comment. As with all Hotels in Surfers Paradise, the Hotel attracts a mixture of Guests, and on some particular nights there may be more younger or older Guests, and even on a particular night there may be one room that is noisy. When this is reported to our Front Office, our procedure is to send security to the floor or room to ask those Guests to have consideration for our other Guests. This usually resolves the issue.
Kind Regards

Needs and update. Great location, but all accessories need updating. TV old and unpleasant. Bedding, no duvet, just an old blanket with sheets on either side. King mattress rock hard. Stains on carpet.
This is not 4.5 star hotel qualities.
Bed needs to be more comfortable!!!!
