“Loved it”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2011

I had the great fortune of staying at the Orchid Guest House twice, once for a week in a single room the other for three days single room en-suite. The rooms were very clean large and very well sealed off for mosquitos etc when the tropical wet season is prevalent. The gardens are a tropical paradise a place of peace and beauty. Very friendly owner and staff, nothing is too much trouble. Even though it was a full house both times it was quite and happy place, I can see anybody enjoying young and old. It is a place to come home to and relax Also private parking if required.

Room Tip: all rooms are good

I liked this Guesthouse a lot. It was such a nice break from all the dumpy party-backpacker hostels I'd been staying at while making the Sydney to Cairns trek. It was a great price for a very clean room with 4 beds. She even picked us up down at the Ferry building for free and dropped us off again when we departed 2 days later. There's even free use of the Washing Machine and then drying on a clothesline.
It's just a short walk down the hill to the downtown area and the grocery store. There's no wireless internet, but there are several internet cafe's right down the road.
I highly recommend staying at this Hostel if you're stuck in Townsville!

I stayed there for only one night, but had time enough to rmark how nice the owner and her son are to their guests : I really mean guest - just beware, it is a backpacker with a plus, but certainly not a B & B!!

The plus :
nice welcome
central location (just 3 blocks from the main street)
on a small street, not noisy.
single beds
clean bathrooms, better than average in the backpackers
if they can they will surely pick you up at the greyhound / ferry station
The owner is really in touch with the rugby play, so just ask her if there is any match when you're there (she'll even pick you up when she goes there)

The minus :
In one night didn't find any, and the majority of the backpackers there were workers, staying longer than me, so it seems to be a cool place to hang over

My personal opinion is, better doublecheck the location than relying only on LP. Learned from my mistake. This place is probably great for young backpackers, but if you are older you should check in somewhere else. The bed without breakfast should be refurbished and some money should be spend for new plates, cups, cutlery, gardening, kitchen etc.. If you have normal expectations, you probably will be disappointed. If you dont care, and you only need a place to sleep, than this might be the right spot for you. The double bedroom has a really tiny ensuite bathroom and a fridge next to your head. Sleep well!

We stayed here two nights as we wanted to visit Magnetic Island but following the cyclone it was not possible to stay in the island itself. We hadn't booked somewhere and the tourist info place recommended this. It is as the last reviewer said a bit of a hotch-potch place - it definitely feels lived in! Our room was with a shared bathroom and so our room literally had twin beds a fridge and a small chest of drawers in was quite small. However it was clean and comfortable and had what we needed including good aircon.

There was access to a shared kitchen which was well stocked and clean and the shared bathroom was also kept clean with shampoo and shower gel supplied.

I would say this is more a place to do a stopover as we did rather than somewhere you would use as a holiday stay as it is more like a hostel than a guesthouse.

We had booked in this accommodation for 4 nights but after arriving and having a look around...we decided it didn't meet our expectations.....it is very much a closed in environment and overgrown with trees and plants...I was getting bitten by the mozziies and felt I would have to hybernate in our room if we stayed...the freezer door in the fridge of our room was hanging off because of ice build up...it needed defrosting badly....the room overall was clean and tidy...but there was laundry in the guests l;ounge waiting to be washed.....not very becoming of a property.....It was very much a ''hotch potch place'' would probably suite the younger backpacker, but more mature people be aware..........

I am sorry this customer was not happy with Orchid Guest House. As there was a storm brewing on the day of arrival the mozzies were out in force all over town. Most guests like our tropical gardens. The ensuites are compact, but older couples on a budget tell me they are comfortable and good value at half the price of city motels.
