We go away a fair bit and don't write reviews except when we think it may help others. So lets start with the positives. We wanted a long weekend escape and considered Fiji, Vanuatu, but then thought why not go local?
Fitzroy Island provided us with that perfect quick escape and we really felt away from it all, so if that's what you're after then definitely consider Fitzroy.
Nice room (once we sorted things out) great pool and pool bar with knowledgeable bartender , great snorkeling and we thought pretty good value despite some earlier reviews. $5.50 for a james Boags Premium at the pool bar is pretty good we thought.

Now for a few negatives or things to improve. We booked an ocean view suite months ago and when we arrived were given room 101. This room looks straight at the back of the lap pool, is dark and musty and there is no view. In my opinion should only be assigned as a last resort. I went back to the reception and was told this was the room assigned to me and the hotel was full. I asked management (if you check reviews on tripadvisor) if we booked months ago why assign us probably the worst room in the place as a first option? And i don't believe the resort was full either. Management had a change of heart (and attitude) and we ended up in room 322 with a great view and lovely doors you open right up to wake up to the lapping sounds of the ocean, beautiful.

Another small thing was the fact the foxys bar closed at 5pm on Sunday. There are not a lot of choices so why close the bar? The views of the sunset from Foxys are stunning and a must do. Luckily Saskia is an excellent bartender and handled the situation very well. She contacted her manager and explained that there were several people wanting to enjoy a drink and watch the sunset at Foxy's and she convinced management to open up a bit longer. So we did get to enjoy a cocktail watching the sunset.

We would definitely go back but would make sure we were assigned a decent room before we got there.

We stayed at Fitzroy Island April 16 to 20. It was my husband and myself (early 30's) and my parents (mid 50's).,
We were up in Carins for a function and wanted an island resort a short ride away so Fitzroy Island was selected as the boat leaves from the main Carins pier and is only an hour boat ride.

We had booked a two bedroom apartment, but when we arrived were put in two single rooms. When we asked at the desk we were told what we had were considered "apartments" and if we wanted interconnecting rooms we would have to pay for an upgrade. Our room had a queen size bed (comprised of two single beds joined up), one lounge chair, one desk chair and a mini writing desk and an ensuite bathroom. In my opinion a fine "standard room" but definitely not a studio apartment. Our rooms looked onto the undercover walk way. No view of the water, the bush or the pool. This made the room very dark as you had to either keep your curtains closed or have everyone who walked past be able to see into the room. The shower was lovely - great water pressure and decent towels and ammenties. Room had a kettle and tea and coffee provisions and wine glasses and a mini fridge. Our TV stopped working on the 2nd day and they sent a repair man down within a couple of hours to replace it which was good. The rooms smelt mouldy, but this may just be a "tropics" thing where nothing is ever fully dry.
Black out curtains in the rooms worked well and allowed a decent sleep in.

The Pool has recently been completely resurfaced and is clean and looks great. There are enough sunloungers around the pool to keep everyone happy, however you have to walk from your room, past the pool and pool bar to the front desk to get pool towels, then traipse back to the pool. Pool bar only seemed to open for 1-2 hours per day. No snacks were available from the pool bar and there was no waiter service. You had to either swim up to the bar - which some people loved or leave the fenced off pool area and go to the pool bar from the outside.

Restaurant
Breakfast was fine. Cooked breakfast was cooked to order and brought out, continental was serve yourself. Waitress couldn't be bothered to restock anything - had to ask for teaspoons 3 days in a row as there was none set out with tea and coffee. Tea and coffee was get up and serve yourself from an urn or pay extra in addition to the $23.50 if you wanted "real" coffee brought to you. Dinner menu was limited to only 4-5 choices for main and 2 entrees plus bread and 3 desserts. Menu had one of the mains change each day we were there and the other dishes remained the same. The food we ordered was hit and miss. Some of the fish was lovely, pasta and risotto meals were small for a main. None of the mains had many vegies with them... we all were hungry after tea and are not big eaters.
Again biggest issue was the waitress who couldn't be bothered to make sure she brought the right drinks, know who ordered what, answer questions etc. Two of the male drink waiters were very helpful and friendly and it was a welcome change.

Foxy's is the "pub" which was only open from 12-5pm on the days we were there. Decent selection and prices of pub meals for lunch. Happy hour saw $3 discount off the $15 cocktails. There is a small shop next to Foxy's that has cold drinks, chips and lollies, ice creams and a small range of toiletries and some grocery items (bread, two minute noodles, tinned goods etc.)

When we arrived it had rained for the past week in Cairns so all Scuba and snorkling tours were cancelled. This is something to watch out for, as apart from laying by the pool, hiring canoes or walking the many walking trails.

The video game room is quite outdated, you need to "hire"bats for the table tennis table and all water sports equipment must be hired from the boat shed or the dive shop - both of which are independent of the resort so no charges can be charged back to your room.

There is no wifi or internet available through the resort and they told us there was no access anywhere on the island. We later found access available through the very helpful man in the dive shop.

There is a large cinema upstairs which played movies 3 times a day for free.

The island was very quiet whilst we were there and staff told us only 23 of the rooms were currently open and operating as the new owners were still making repairs and modifications to the other rooms.

For the price paid the service and facilities is below what I would expect.

No room service available

No spa or massage services on the island

Room Tip: Ask if your room views the water on the walkway

i decided to get a change of scene for a day and go over to fitzroy island on easter monday.
i went with great adventures who were the cheapest .
it was a perfect sunny day and i hadnt been to the island for 20years and it hed just reopened after some renovations to the resort and swiming poolk.
well, was i impressed!! the pool area is absolutely beautiful and the resort itself loked modern, clean and had everything u could want.
the new convenience store is a brilliant idea as it keeps your costs down not having to dine out in the rrestraunt for ebery meal.
i loved the atmosphere of foxys bar but only wished i coludve experienced iut at night when it would be in full swing.
i love walking and enjoyed the secret garden and nudey beach walks so much.
my only regret was that i hadnt planned to stay for a few days..there were some fab deakls on accomodation and i wouldve been extremely happy there for a few days.
it is definately on my number 1 list of things to do,to stay on the island and imerse myself in all it has to offer(lots of lazing by the magnificent pool)next time.
can recommend not just as a day trip destination, make sure u stay a couple of nights.
great adventures were great to travel over and back with.
helpful, friendly crew and it only takes about 50minutes there and back.
congrats to the new owners of this resort for really making it into a first class place to go and to stay.ill be back soon.

Room Tip: didnt stay overnight so i would have to go by other reviews on this one,but from what i sawm, they lo...

We recently spent two nights on Fitzroy Island resort which is apparently now under new management (again) as a short family holiday. Our experience there was a little mixed with good and not so good. Our holiday was a package deal with fast cat ferry to the island included. However, the fast cat departure times had been changed and we had not been advised of this. Through pure luck we had arrived at the terminal early so managed to make a dash to board but had we missed it we would not have been able to get to the island until the next day. On arrival we noted some guests wanting to take the fast cat to the outer reef had indeed missed it due to it's change of time. Staff apologised however it would seem this was an issue that should have been communicated to all guests beforehand.
Our room was very nice with a great view of the bay but sadly a leak under the bathroom sink made for a rather wet and dangerous floor. Unfortunately, there was a definate smell of mould in our suite which seemed to enhance when the aircon was on. This may have been due to the many days of torrential rain the week before we visited however it does need to be addressed for health purposes.Beds were very comfy and had good "black out" curtains for those not wanting to wake too early. Be aware .....the air con cannot be set above 24 degrees which is really not cool enough in the summer months. Our housekeeping staff, Sharon was wonderful bringing us extra towels, toiletries and pillows and ensuring that should we need anything else she was working our floor and to call her anytime. Reception staff were friendly and helpful in advising us of where all the facilities were located. Pool had just undergone a refurbishment and was clean and inviting. There is only one restaraunt on the island and expect to pay "resort" prices for food and wine. However, Foxy's cafe located not far from the resort has a small selection of food and drinks for lunch (and dinner Friday's and Saturdays) which is a cheaper alternative. Of course all the ocean suites have well equiped kitchens for those on a budget.
The dive shop is well equipped with all the gear you need from newbie snorkellers to the professional diver and Aaron the owner will definately look after you. He also runs some great snorkelling and dive trips and is a wealth of information and help.
The bay is a fantastic area for snorkelling especially at low tide and has a diverse range of corals to see. The small wharf is a great place to walk on in the evenings with a diverse range of fish that come out at night - we even saw a huge lion fish feeding on the pilon.
In all we had a great time at Fitzroy Island and reccomend it to couples and families but I would like to see their teething problems sorted out and more communication given to guests with regard to any changes made that will affect them.

Room Tip: The one bedroom ocean suite room no. 224 has a great view.

We were both looking for a bit of relaxation and while we haven't been to Fitzroy Island for many years, we decided to stay in an ocean suite for 3 nights. Travelled on one of the fast ferries (Being just an hour from Cairns), it was a great way to start our break. On arrival at 11am at Fitzroy our room was ready so we just moved our gear straight in. The rooms have all been renovated, and we were extremely pleased with our choice. The room was clean with loads of room. We were on the first floor and we had a nice view of the trees and ocean.

With the beach literally 50metres away and coral at the waters edge, we spent a lot of time just snorkelling and relaxing on the beach (we hired our snorkelling equip from the resort).

There is a restauarnt in the resort where we had our buffet breakfast (included in our package) each day, and we went there for dinner on one night. The food was quite good, and the staff friendly. Just a 50m stroll from the resort there is a nice very casual bar/cafe on the beachfront. We had lunch and a few afternoon drinks there every day, and ate there on two nights. The menu was simple, but the food was quick and tasty. We literally walked out of the water and to the bar, a great spot.

The weather was perfect, service was great, room was great, and everything is at your doorstep. Overall, we had probably the most relaxing holiday we've ever had, and can't wait to get back there.

We spent 3 nights at Fitzroy at the end of February for the purpose of undertaking an underwater photography workshop ran by Xanthe Rivett. Our other option would have been to stay in Cairns and do day boat trips each day. We are so glad Xanthe suggested basing ourselves at Fitzroy Island for this course!

First, I would like to acknowledge what a great job Xanthe did with the underwater photography workshop. We would highly recommend her for any underwater photography needs. Xanthe is professional, friendly and does a great job in teaching underwater photography skills as well as sharing her passion for the underwater world and all that live there.

The only activity we did while at Fitroy was scuba diving. The dive shop is well equipped and operated by a superb team. We had great service and assistance from Renaldo, Dennis and Aaron. The best part of diving at Fitzroy for us was the ability to dive right from the beach. (The dive shop does run boat trips as well and we heard great feedback from divers and snorkelers who went out on the boat). We enjoyed the shore diving as we were able to do 70 minute dives.

Some of the things we saw while shore diving at Fitzroy were: schools of fish near the pier, nudi branchs, parrot fish, angel fish, butterfly fish, a curious pufferfish, coral trout, honeycomb cods, anemone fish, Redcoat Squirrelfish, lionfish, banded shrimp, an awesome juvenile bat fish, various rays, a small reef shark, triggerfish, juvenile trevally and loads of other fish. It was just great! I've uploaded some photos so you can see how good the diving is here!

The resort itself is one of those places that appears as though it was built as someone's dream of a 5 star resort. For some reason, it is not seeking the 5 star market and that was fine with us. The pool area was not huge (like Hayman), but it was pretty and had a swim up bar. The pool was drained on our last day there and a big project was started to remove the old tiles and start over with new ones. We stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment and it was furnished with a high quality fit out. Fancy ceiling fans, leather couch and chairs, there was even leather on the dining room table. The curtains were the best quality I have ever seen at a resort. The tracks are staggered to ensure total blackout of light as well as privacy. Black marble bathroom (yes, the water leaks out from under the shower door due to what must be a bad design of the shower/bathroom floor. We rectified the problem easily by asking for a pool towel from reception and voila... problem fixed until your next shower and by then, the pool towel should be dry enough to dry up the floor again). The kitchen in our apartment was first class. There was even a fancy built in dishwasher drawer that we used. Admittedly, we never tried out the stove or oven and can't attest to whether or not they were functional (some reviewers have said they couldn't use the kitchen facilities). If you are planning on using them, you may want to call prior to lugging alot of non-microwavable food over and double check they are able to be used.

We enjoyed the breakfast buffet at the main restaurant. On our last morning they didn't have the buffet set up; however, they asked us what we would like and made it to order. It was fantastic! We had bacon, eggs, hash browns, mushrooms and tomatoes. It made perfect sense that they didn’t put on a full breakfast buffet on the mornings when they knew there were not many people on the island.

We ate lunch every day at Foxys. The atmosphere there is nice and the food is okay. Great place to kick back with a tropical drink and look out towards the beach. It worked out good for us since we were doing the photography thing and had not brought food over with us to make our own lunches. Next time we go back we will pack some snacks and food for our lunches. On the Sunday that we were there a salsa group from Cairns came over for the day and made use of the large dance floor at Foxys. It would make for a nice day trip.

Dinner every night was at the main restaurant and was actually quite nice. Keeping in mind that you are on an island where everything has to be brought over, the menu isn't too bad. Our first night there we noticed there was nothing on the dessert menu that had chocolate in it. Upon mentioning this to our waitress, she went and asked the chef if they had anything chocolate... Lucky us! They had a chocolate brownie concoction which had been made in preparation for the next night's menu and we were able to have some of that with ice cream. Yummo!

There is a small shop on the island for incidentals (panadol, a few snacks, a few souvenirs), but nothing to make a meal from if that’s what you are looking for. The shop was closed on the Sunday afternoon, but an enquiry at Foxy’s soon got the store opened up for me and another guest to purchase a couple of things.

I hope to make visiting Fitzroy a regular trip for diving excursions. I have great memories of those few days there. It’s so close to Cairns, but feels like it’s a far away exotic island with a bonus for easy access to great diving. Give it a try.

I had volunteered on Fitzroy Island in 1997 undertaking a coral reef and environmental survey with a conservation charity so I knew the island was perfect, beautiful and a wonderful place to spend a holiday.

I had booked a "Ocean suite" which stated that it included views across Welcome Bay. On arrival I was given a room on the ground floor (Room 122). There was a large unused wooden shed a few feet in front of the balcony and I could see a tiny glimpse of the sea lapping on the sea.... most certainly not an ocean view or view across the Bay. I went to reception and after about 45 minutes of waiting around I was given a room on the second floor (Room 211). Room 211 did have a view. The reception staff and cleaners confessed that the ground floor rooms don't have views, hence them being happy to change my room. I think the marketing team need to change their categories... If it was my resort I would introduce or rename the ground floor suites as "economy suites" as they don't really honestly have ocean views!!

If you get what you have paid for - a room with a view - this is a really great place to stay. The Suites are very clean - infact spotless - and very nicely appointed. The oven and hob are disconnected but there is a microwave, toaster, kettle and large fridge.

The dive centre is very well run, has great staff and they take you to great spots to dive and snorkel. The coral is very beautiful.

The resort has been recently renovated and the new swimming pool is fantastic and a great place to 'chill'

The breakfast is very good value and the restaurant is very clean. The staff worked very hard refilling the buffet and clearing tables. I was impressed with how the breakfast room was run.

The kiosk sells toiletries, cold soft drinks, ice creams, pies and snacks like cheese biscuits. Some things were a little pricey... they could do with carrying more stock and a little cheaper.

Optus mobile phone signal and 3G works on the island with the best signal in the reception area and on the Jetty

All in all a really great place to stay

Room Tip: Get a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor
