“I Expected A Lot More - 3 Star Service in a 5 Star Location with 7 Star Prices”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2014

The location was fantastic, well laid out with all the amenities that I would have wanted and expected. It was 'winter' season - end of May - but the weather was fantastic and this helped tremendously. The room was well laid out with an up to date flat screen Samsung TV with HDMI and USB ports so that we could watch our own movies off an external hard drive - everything seemed to close early and there was no entertainment in an evening. Be aware that the resort costs are extremely high for everything, we had luckily taken a lot of food with us and the room had a full size fridge in it with a freezer compartment, which meant we had all our lunches covered – we took a large ice box. The on-site shop closed at 6:30pm which I thought was far too early, wi-fi is extra, soup in the main restaurant is AU$14.00, a Corona beer at the jetty bar/hut is AU$9.50, 4 wheel drive hire on the island was AU$280 per day etc., etc., etc., there was much to possibly whinge about. There were some absolutely fantastic staff, the majority didn't seem to care at all and when you consider the prices and the general style of the complex and the possibilities, this is a great shame. The potential for an incredible experience is there and would only take a few minor changes, I just hope that this happens and I was told that there is new management in place, so fingers crossed for them! If you are prepared to splash the cash for a special occasion, money no object, this is the place, just be prepared for ‘jobs worth’ staff and poor service on many occasions.

Room Tip: Make certain that you request a top floor room with a "true" ocean view.

Dear Clive R
Thank you for taking the time to respond and please accept our apologies that the service you received during your stay did not meet expectations. We invite you to contact us on feedback@kingfisherbay.com (mention this review) as we are interested in learning more about the staff problems you encountered so we call follow up.

I also wanted to clarify that the 4WD company you mention is operated by a third party, not the resort. For guests wishing to hire and bring 4WDs to the island, please check the fraserislandferry website for vehicle transfer costs.

We stayed 2 nights in upstairs interconnecting rooms. Tidy & fairly clean but had a very musty smell which upset a couple of noses. It was very noisy with people walking along the wooden walkway outside our rooms. Unfortunately we were close to the staff smoking area and the waft of smoke was unpleasant. The Maheno restaurant was okay but the price for both food & beverage was over the top for what was served. On the whole the staff were pleasant but the majority were overseas travellers and it was obvious they would be there a short time and as a result not quite as customer focussed as expected.

Thanks for taking the time to post and you candid review. We're not sure if you spoke to the front desk about the smoke issue you mention, but the team would've been happy to assist you and your family where possible.

I had a wonderful 3 night stay at Kingfisher bay resort and the buffet brekkies were great and also there were several restaurants to choose from for dinner although very expensive in most but cheese platter and wine at the jetty at sunset was great and so beautiful

Dear michellemaroochydore
Thanks for the four star review and for taking the time to post. We appreciate your kind comments re the quality of our meals and totally agree - indulging in a cheese platter and a glass of wine whilst the sun sets over the Great Sandy Strait is one of the must-dos during a visit.

We recently stayed in a villa at KFBR and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a cabin towards the bottom of the hill which meant no hills to climb, and the kids could scoot from one cabin to the next visiting their cousins. The pools are an enticing way to spend the day and are most relaxing. We ordered cocktails by the pool and service was great.
On exploring the island, the road out of Kingfisher has changed to bitumen since the last time we were there. That made it a lot easier to get up the hill, not quite as much fun, but for a 4WD novice I was very pleased! It is an easy and beautiful drive to lake mackenzie and we spent the day exploring the island, then back to the resort for a lovely meal and a few more drinks on the deck.
all in all we thoroughly enjoyed the stay. yes, some of the rooms could do with an update, but still very clean and comfortable. a great location to explore the uniqueness of fraser island.

Room Tip: if you don't like climbing hills ask for a villa or room down towards the resort itself.

A recent three night stay at Kingfisher resort was nothing short of fantastic. From the comfortable rooms with spectacular verandahs to the excellent Beauty Spots tour the whole stay was full of superlatives. We will be back- for a longer stay next time so we can explore the island in depth.

Stayed 2 weeks ago in a hotel room. Haven't been to KFBR for 15 years and I can honestly say, nothing has changed since then ! Hotel is clean, we stayed in a downstairs room and the noise from upstairs is insanely loud ! even walking around and opening the sliding door to the deck .. paper thin walls !.... Food in the restaurants is AVERAGE to say the least !! and WAY overpriced . Breakfast mush is sad sorry . I don't think I will go back to Kingfisher for another 15 years unless they get their act together .. sorry for the neg post but that's the truth.

Travel lots, eat out lots the meal that I sent back from the Maheno Restaurant was the worst meal ever.
Complained and asked to see a manager, no one came near me. Unprofessional poor response by the manager in charge. First time I've complained about service. Great that the person working in the Seabelle bar restored my faith in good service.

Dear Melman64
Please accept our sincere apologies that our F&B offerings and service in Maheno did not meet expectations. I invite you to contact us on feedback@kingfisherbay.com with more details, so our F&B Manager, Stewart Burchell, can follow up with the chef/duty manager involved. We are pleased we were able to redeem ourselves via the extra attentive Seabelle Bar person.
