Had a 5 night stay recently. Clean rooms. Food was limited - expensive. Drinks were average pub prices (thanks God for that). Large pool was very old, dirty and wouldn't touch it. Small pool around the bar area was very small. We fought for the hammocks as the new pool chairs spread around the resort are so hard and uncomfortable. Wildlife was awesome. Definitely needs a lot of maintenance and were told the new mattresses would arrive next week, and they are really needed as you kept falling into the middle.

Room Tip: Bring your case with alcohol, drink and nibbles - and some 3 minute noodles is a must as eating in t...

Dear Milliamaddie,

Thank you for your feedback in relation to your recent stay at BreakFree Long Island Resort.

I am glad to learn that you found the rooms to be clean, and you are correct regarding the mattresses – the majority of mattresses in our Beachfront rooms have been replaced with brand new ones.

Given the fact BreakFree Long Island Resort is a small resort of only 140 rooms, we find that Palms Restaurant, offering buffet and a la carte options, and the Pool Bar, offering relaxed a la carte meals, is sufficient. The Resort Store also offers a range of snacks, including fruit, cakes, pies, etc.

In order for our guests to enjoy a more cost effective holiday, we also offer a range of packages that include all or some meals, as well as transfers and accommodation. This can allow for guests to budget adequately and save some money too. These packages are available to everyone.

Over the past two years BreakFree Long Island Resort has undergone a series of front and back of house improvements, including upgrades to the rooms and public areas. These upgrades are ongoing and will continue over the coming months (e.g. we are currently refurbishing the public toilet blocks, and shortly we will be re-tiling the Reception area).

We also remind all our guests that we are not a BYO island with regards to alcohol.

Thank you again for your feedback and if you wish to discuss any of the issue you have raised, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Thank you and kind regards,

My husband & I spend 6 night at the LIR and we came home relax and energised. The rooms were clean and what you see in photos is what you get. The staff were great, friendly, helpful and full of good information. As a guest you can sit back and do nothing and watch the world go by or choose to do activities such as mini golf, swimming, paddle boat, fishing, snorkelling, bush walking etc. A small fee apply to hiring snorkelling gear which you keep till you leave, You will need a comfortable pair of walking shoes as the tracks a little rough. A piece of paradise in the Whitsunday without the price tag. If you're a person who loves peace and tranquillity then this island is the place for you or your family. Thank you for staff and Management for a wonderful time on your island we will return.

Room Tip: South side room 300-400 does have a good view. Love the ground floor for our stay.

I am so pleasantly surprised at this beautiful location!! Just gorgeous. Was sceptical after reading some reviews on here but they were soon proven wrong. Great value meals and drinks at the pool bar, meals were yummy and quick and all the staff were lovely and helpful. Fantastic activities!! So close to giving five stars, only reason I didn't were just tiny finishings that weren't quite there but for the great value you would expect that. Can't wait to come back again!!!

We stayed at this resort for a couple of nights. Now before I begin, let me start by saying that I know this resort is a 3.5 star facility.
Besides the animal encounters and the view from our room, I was quite disappointed with a few things. The room was not cleaned properly, and the resort in general is starting to fall apart. Peeling paint on almost every surface (sink counter tops in public restrooms, walls, etc). Our bedroom had a lot of watermarks on the ceiling and our curtain rod was broken on one end. As someone who has worked in the hotel cleaning industry, I don't think the rooms were up to standard. Cobwebs in the corners and under beds. The curtains could also do with a wash. I understand this is a humid climate, but perhaps they could try and stay on top of their maintenance a bit better. I think a main problem is that the peeling paint makes the place look dirty, when in reality it is clean but just needs maintenance.

Word of advice: don't eat at the lunch buffet! It is NOT worth the $22 they charge you. The food is bland and warm at best. The only reason we ate a full plate is because we were all starving and had already paid. The pool bar food is MUCH better, and around the same price with decent portions.

I felt as if the resort tried to make as much money as they could in any way possible. It costs money to play pool, rent anything except single person kayaks (snorkel gear, paddle
boards etc). What I was REALLY UNIMPRESSED with was when we went to go for a kayak. We were told the tide was too far out and we would have to wait until morning (as if there was an emergency they had to be able to get the rescue boat out to us and this wasn't possible in a low tide- completely understandable). BUT THEN, 30 minutes later- when the tide was even further out, we saw a bigger group go out kayaking. This was incredibly disappointing as it was the one thing I really wanted to do - it is a passion of mine and I wanted to see if I could spot any fish or more
turtles! This is the one thing that really bothered me- the view was great, staff amazing, bar food good- but I am quite upset that we were told it wasn't possible to do an activity only to find another larger group doing it minutes later.

The staff in general were quite awesome IN PERSON - very friendly and happy to answer any questions- not to mention they try and get you involved in many activities!
HOWEVER if you phone them, do not expect to get any help! We tried calling them on our drive to airlie beach to ask about parking facilities and ferry transfers. In response to asking "how much is the parking" and "who do I contact to book a ferry" all I got was "I don't know." I would have appreciated a response along the lines of "I'm not sure. Let me look it up for you/ let me ask someone for you". Very unhelpful

So overall:
Bar food: ****
Lunch buffet: *
Staff: ***1/2
Cleanliness: ** 1/2 (needs general maintenance around resort).
Bird feeding: *****
Wildlife: *****

Dear CarlynC288,

Thank you for providing your feedback in relation to your recent stay at BreakFree Long Island Resort.

BreakFree Long Island Resort has undergone a series of front and back of house refurbishments and upgrades over the past two years and improvements continue to be made in 2014 (for example, we have recently had new beds put into the Beachfront rooms, and we are about to begin works to refurbish our public toilet areas and reception foyer floor). We recognise that there are still a couple of things that need ‘touching up’ though and these will be addressed in the near future.

Thank you for the feedback that you have provided about the staff of BreakFree Long Island Resort. I am pleased to learn that you found them to be friendly, helpful and happy. It is disappointing, however, to learn that this helpfulness did not extend to the telephone conversation you had. Please be assured that I have addressed this issue with my team to ensure customer service expectations are met and exceeded in the future.

I have also followed up with my Housekeeping Manager & Maintenance Manager in relation to the comments you have made about the cleanliness and maintenance issues in your room. We do have a preventative maintenance and cleaning schedule in place for all rooms. Please accept my sincerest apologies that these things were not up to our usual standard.

The group of kayakers that you have mentioned would have been on the Turtle and Reef Safari, an organised guided tour operated by The Watersports Guys. Unlike regular kayak hire, this tour is not a free tour and those participating kayak around the bay in search of turtles and other marine life with a staff member guiding them. Guest safety is absolutely paramount to us and water sport activities, besides guided group tours, are not available to guests on low tide as if something was to happen, getting a rescue boat out to the person would be too difficult. We have designed the water sports schedule to ensure there is always something available between 8.00am and 4.00pm, whether that be kayaks, stand up paddle boards and jet skis during high tide, or guided tours such as the Turtle and Reef Safari or Coral Reef Eco Tour during low tide.

Thank you again for your feedback and if you wish to discuss any of the issues you have raised in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact me direct.

We had 5 nights here. Have enjoyed every moment. The thing you must remember when staying here is its not a 5 star resort. However the service of the staff may as well be. Its a great place to relax. There is also short ferry rides to other areas. We have enjoyed our stay the food is not to expensive. $35 for a 3 course dinner is great value. Would we come back again? Of course.

Stayed here for 3 nights back in November. Very nice welcome - golf kart pick up from jetty and Hawaiian neckwear gift! Room was small, but had everything we needed. We'd paid for sea view, and were right on the sand - well worth paying the little extra. The island itself is very quiet, basic and natural. Sand wasn't kept well, and there were only a few sun loungers, but I liked this - not too touristy! It's expensive on the island - food and drink, etc, but they have no competition I guess! Wifi is free in bar area. There are lots of nice little walks to do, and seeing Wallabies, parrots and turkey's around the place was pretty cool!

Room Tip: Pay for the sea front room and request the quieter end

We stayed at Long Island resort for 5 nights in February. Based on the reviews I was expecting it to be absolutely horrible but we decided it didn't matter we just needed a bed we were ging for the sites and activities not the room and it was one of the cheapest options (that wasn't a backpackers) despite the reviews we thought it was a perfect low matinenece, chilled out vibe around the resort. The water sports staff were super friendly and helpful in getting us out in the water. The reception hospitality staff were nice and helpful. The cocktails were always a favourite and happy hour mixed between crazy lorakeet feeding was always entertaining. We met plenty of other holidayers at the bar and made some great new friends, not only that some of the staff joined in in their time off with us to have a drink and give us a 'unique' holiday experience. Ferry and other day trips was all easily organised from the resort store. After all that the thing that mattered the least being the room was absolutely fine, it was comfortable and clean. Food was reasonably priced for an Island and there was nothing wrong with it. After our stay we were left baffled as to what the other people writing previous reviews were complaining about? The resort is a 3 star resort and that's exactly what it is, infact even better, some people are just too hard to please and forget to experience the beautiful surroundings and activities galore that are on offer and focus on the small negative aspects like 'outdated decor' which ultimately do not effect your holiday experience what so ever !!!!!! Thank you Long Island for a great mink get away we would definitely come back and visit any time :)
