“Nothing to get excited about....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2010

The Intercontinental Hotel Adelaide is situated right in the centre of town next to the main railway station and very close to the river. Not a very inspiring hotel, quite dull when you enter due to the black marble floors, brown walls and gold banisters together with poor lighting. The reception area is open plan in that you can look up from the centre of the lobby and see the floors of the hotel which form a circle above you. The staff are friendly and efficient and make up for the shortfalls else where.

The rooms are clean and bright, good comfortable beds and well appointed, but again like the rest of the hotel uninspiring and nothing to get excited about. Its a tight squeeze between the bathroom and the main room with not a great deal of wardrobe space so if its two of you its cases on the floor for one of you...

The usual applies here, expensive internet, mini bar and room service. You are in the center of town so finding something to eat and good internet is very easy. The tram stops right outside the hotel that will take you to Glenelg which is well worth a visit especially for the sunset.

Breakfast was well stocked and varied. Again the staff were friendly and helpful and left you alone to get on with it.

As a business hotel or a quick stop over its ok but for a holiday I’d probably look around for alternatives. When I was there the pool was out of commission for 9 mouths which in the summer is odd and inconvenient to say the least. Marks out of 10...? 6. Sorry.

Stayed here for 4 nights in an upper floor river view king room. I had previously stayed here when it was the Hyatt 3 years ago and it is now looking a bit tired. It's now 4 1/2 rather than 5 star really. Staffing and service are adequate and routine rather than going that extra mile. The room and its decor itself is looking a bit dated now. Bathroom nice however. Internet at $ 29 a day is outrageous these days considering a lot of US hotels have it for free. Valet parking for A$28 a day. Certainly convenient if you have to go to CBD or convention centre (next door) . Casino adjacent. Rooms a tad noisy due to the atrium construction of the hotel, so a noisy guest in a corridor 8 floors below will be heard by you.

We dined at both the Shiki japanese and Riveride restaurants on site. I reviewed the Shiki separately, and we enjoyed that. The riverside is the standard buffet breakfast and lunch. They do a buffet dinner, but I would recommend the a la carte as a safer bet.

A big gripe was that the seemingly well equiped gym didn't open until 9 am on weekends ! This is crazy these days as most fitness freaks need to be out there sweating at 0530 onwards. Get with the times IC!! Needs a 24 hour access !

Swimming pool still being renovated, but this was correctly advertised by them in advance.

Summary : if you want true 5 star in Adelaide, I think I will try the Hilton next time.

I stayed here as a night away with my partner and we loved it. We were given a lovely room on one of the higher floors (think we were upgraded as we only paid for a basic room) and it was beautiful. We often take a night out and stay in Adelaide and this was the cheapest room we had and was the best. The view was lovely over the river. We had tea in the restuarant downstairs. There was a buffet but we ofted to just order off the menu which the waitress was very helpful with. The food was so good but I did think it was a little over-the-top expensive. I would definately return. Such a good location right next to the casino. It would be nice to see some upgrades in the rooms but regardless of this its still nice. The pool is under renovation and they clearly state this. If they are to upgrade at all it has to be shut at some stage.

It was extremely hot in Adelaide for our two night stay and it was extremely unfortunate that the swimming pool was out of action until March 2010. Other than that and a few other minor niggling things our stay was extremely comfortable. We stayed in a club room which was a bit on the small side but had a great view. It had all the amenities you expect from a five star hotel. It had an interconnecting door with the room next door and at times the next door neighbours could be heard. I only hope they could not hear my husbands snoring. The space for the mini bar and tea and coffee making facilites was a bit cramped. The marble bathroom was spacious and had a fabulous shower head. The king bed was wonderfully comfortable.

Most staff were fabulous with no request being too much bother. After travelling in the outback for two weeks the concierge organised for our car to be cleaned inside and out and when we notifed them we would be needing the car they ensured the car was left running to enable the air con to cool the inside down before we picked it up. Restaurant staff were great and the food was delicious. Front desk staff were very helpful in sorting a concern we had with our account and it was settled to our satisfaction. The Club Lounge staff could have been a little less serious and a bit more personable. Overall the service was excellent.

Locatiion of the hotel is close to shopping, night life, casino, river, parks and either a short drive or tram ride to the beach.

We would definitely consider staying here on our next visit to Adelaide (if only to try the pool!!!!).

Booked hotel anticipating a nice weekend getaway with the wife. First impression-no doorman to greet you. Fairly unimpressive, decor has not changed for over 10 years (it was then called the Hyatt). Room small and reallly not 5 star standard (although was clean and adequate). Unappealing view despite paying extra for "river view and higher floor". Booked at the Japanese restaurant- would not recommend eating there if you are a Japanese food buff who likes sashimi/sushi-very limited selection.(Restaurant seems to specialise in Teppanyaki). Buffet breakfast at Riverside Cafe was good. Finally had a long wait for valet to get my car. It seems they had forgotten we were there. The valet guys seem to be more interested in catching up with each other rather then providing a professional, prompt service. Whilst I was waiting, noticed a little old lady struggling to carry her bags down the hotel steps to her car- no-one offered to help. Hotel reallly needs to lift its game if it wants to be called a 5 star hotel, and compete at a national level.

We have stayed at this hotel from time to time since it opened (as a Hyatt) 20 years ago.It set a new standard for Adelaide with its lovely river views and young enthusiastic staff. Over the years service standards slipped away and having encountered both casualness and (at reception) unforgettable rudeness we chose to stay elsewhere. Last week we decided to try the "new" Intercontinental and we were delighted to find that the original feelings of hospitality and care have been restored. Already, the Intercontinental is well on its way to regaining top spot in Adelaide.

My family and I recently stayed at the Intercon in Adelaide for almost a week (family with young adults and a child) and the service was just excellent. My mum paid extra for valet parking, prepaid buffet breakfast and an upgrade for a river view room and the extras did not disappoint. Upon arrival we were greeted with friendly staff and had no issues checking in. The buffet breakfast each morning was well stocked and replenished straight away during breakfast hours. My mother made a personal request on Christmas Day for Santa's present to be delivered to my sister as a surprise. The hotel staff gladly delivered the present with enthusiasm and this small touch is priceless. The valet staff were also exceptional and friendly, and provided advice on where to go sightseeing around and nearby Adelaide tourist spots, including a complimentary map. Extra touches like a well cleaned room, fresh bedlinen, a gourmet selection of teas and coffee which were replenished daily made our stay enjoyable. The only let down I could find was that internet connection was very expensive. Otherwise, we highly rate this hotel and will definitely come back in the future.
