“Inexperienced staff, poor service, small room”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2009

We had booked a suite when we got there the front desk staff couldn't seem to find our reservation. None of the front desk staff knew what was going on. Eventually they found our reservation. The room was small, no bath robes, small bathroom, no spa bath just a crappy shower. We had organised a late check out for midday, a front desk staff member rang our room just after 11am asking "Are you checking out now"?
The hotel is in a great location, near the casino, transport, museums, etc. Restaurant is nice, good food.

an abysmal hotel - decor in the "standard" rooms are a disgusting battleship grey, the rooms i was given was at the back of the hotel about a mile away from the lift with a bad back i struggled to get my bag to the room, the keycards are impossible to use, and finally, the room i was given backed onto a nightclub. - so dont expect any sleep - and the staff are fully aware of the noise problem and dont let you know beforehand.

in short i would avoid this dreadful, appalling excuse for a hotel. i hated it. adelaide was a beautiful city but this hotel ruined my stay

This is a good hotel with excellent facilities in a great location right on the 'Museum Strip' and just outside the train station and tram stop.

However, be warned that there are two types of rooms - what they call three star and four star. The three star rooms are appalling - I paid for a standard and got a pokey room with a bed you couldn't walk around. The net curtain broke and when I took a shower (in a bizarrely shaped space) the water seeped out of the shower train under the bathroom door and under the bedroom carpet. To be fair their response was immediate and I was given another (similar) room for the night before being moved to an 'upgraded' room which was much better.

This is one of those hotels with a main bit and an annexe - the annexe rates one star with me and is to be avoided unless you want peeling paint etc etc (the first room hadn't even been dusted).

Can't complain about the public facilities here as they were excellent with free papers and a really nice bar with daily happy hour.

Nice Hotel average size room and bathroom. Room was clean. TV small. Staff do not interact with guests. Good for budget travel. Close to Train station. Bus stop out the front. Casino across the road. Lots of restaurants on surrounding streets.

What a shocking stay we experienced.

Not only was the room the worst we had ever seen - in cleanliness amenities and site the size was horrendous. The cleanliness was so bad that we were afraid to even put our toothbrush on the basin until we had cleaned it ourselves thoroughly.

The carpets had a strange smell and a range of varying colour inclusions.
None of which were in the original pattern.

Dont try and have a shower while your partner is trying to apply her makeup!

The worst part however was the incredible noise emanating from an adjacent all night disco. The first night it stopped after 3.30 after a patron was stabbed and killed. The second night is was 6 am - how do they keep going?? Even the glass in the window was losing the vibration battle.

Breakfast was a horror - All we wanted was coffee and toast - not available - smorgasborg or nothing - so nothing it was!

Parking was so cramped that it was dangerous to leave a car in the basement - pieces of the wall were falling off and onto cars in that proximity.

I can nor recommend this place at all - it needs pulling down and starting again - even to the staff - most of whom were difficult to understand as we could not speak their pprimary language.

All in all an absolute disaster.

This rooms in this hotel were a disgrace. Tiny, dingy, TVs the size of a postage stamp, bathrooms the size of an aeroplane bathroom. Broken showerhead. My partner had an (obviously) broken foot and (as I didn’t check in at the same time as him) had to carry his giant suitcase all the way to a dingy room at the back of the hotel, through the fire escape and UP SOME STAIRS by himself! (there is a lift but the levels are split levels so there are still stairs). Cleaning staff nicked some of our stuff (trinkets, nothing valuable nor worth reporting). The carpark, which we used several times a day, stank like vomit in a really bad way. We were there for nine days and nothing was done about the stench in that time. Queues at checkout time filled the lobby, leading to a wait of approx. 20 minutes. Overall the whole place was depressing and horrible – I couldn’t advise people strongly enough NOT to stay there. We would have been better off paying half the price for a double room in a hostel – it would have been far less depressing and we would have gotten value for money.

Only good things were: Accor–style bar, restaurant and lobby. Excellent service in the bar – we didn’t try the restaurant. Reception desk staff were friendly and (apart from the suitcase incident) helpful, they opened and printed some spreadsheets for me voluntarily, and were pretty friendly. Uniforms/bar/restaurant/marble lobby/exterior set up a very false expectation of the service and room quality.

If we hadn't pre-paid we would have left the second day. Luckily we were house-hunting so didn't have to spend much time in the hotel.

I was asked to do a survey at the end of my stay and I told them everything I’ve mentioned above.

We stayed at the Mercure Grosvenor for two separate nights. The first night we were in a room at the very back of the hotel (seems like the hotel behind the building was purchased and added to the existing hotel). I believe we walked a solid block to get to the room from the elevator. The bathroom was absolutely miniscule; it was smaller than a cruise ship bathroom. It was also very outdated and mouldy. Also, the back of the hotel is near a night club that is open until 4 am – and it is loud; we heard the music thumping until 4 am and then heard the drunks filtering out. The room was a far cry from the standard to be expected from a Mercure hotel.

The second time we checked in we asked for a quieter room. We were then “upgraded” to a nicer room. The room and bathroom were much nicer and were what I expect from a Mercure. However, funny part is we paid more for the first night in the terrible room!

The hotel is in a good location for exploring town. The free tram stop is just out the front door, and it wasn’t far to walk to anything anyway.
