Based on a glowing review in a usually reliable guidebook, we phoned Annie's and were delighted to get in. I can't recall having been so disappointed.

Some of the promised positives were there - it's a brief walk from the CBD; there's free parking across the street; the actual staff (as opposed to the inept backpacker help) was friendly and helpful. However that's where the positives end.

The staff were perplexed by the guidebook's refernce to free night tours - not only did the tours not exist, the staff had never heard of them. The 'movie nights' consisted of a pile of DVD's played at deafening volume in the only common area by the most assertive guests - when we were there, two German girls who cranked up the volume on 'Australia,' then shouted over it so that no one could hear a word. With no staff on the premises after 8pm, there was no one to impose any kind of courtesy. While the clearly posted rules prohibited bringing in any alcohol or liquor, the even larger signs above the hostel-run bar advertised a happy hour, with drinks served by the backpacking helpers, not the actual staff who had already gone home.

"Breakfast' consisted of a couple of loafs of bread and buckets of peanut butter and jam, deposited on a counter that seemed to be months deep in grime. Dishes/cutlery were usually rinsed with cold water - there was no soap available - and the towel racks were positioned so that dishtowels ALWAYS hung down into open-mouthed garbage cans.

Our room - a double ensuite - was filthy and the bed uncomfortable. The staff seemed not to know whether the room was already taken, and to be honest, we couldn't tell if the bed had already been slept in or not. The window was nearlky impossible to open - we suspect it was supposed to be bolted shut, but the job had been done poorly enough for us to force it open.

This was by far the worst place we stayed in Australia. - a fact made doubly frustrating by its obvious potential. But perhaps the owner isn't the only one to blame. Doesn't Adelaide have a board of health, or a chamber of commerce? Surely some municipal agency is charged with checking on basic standards of hygiene.

  • Liked — that we stayed only 2 nights

I have been at this hostel for 3 weeks, staying in a 10 bed dorm paying $20 a night. This is the best value hostel i have stayed in, including free breakfast.

Some people are rather confused with the details regarding the features of the hostel, the website needs to be updated which i have stressed to the manager and it will be fixed. The hostel has free wireless internet, which you will need a laptop to use. Price of the hostel is $22 a night, staying over a week you pay only $20.

The hostel is very clean, sheets can be changed as often as you like, one of the cleanliest kitchens i have used with all the equipment provided. plenty to fridge and shelving space, where nothing is stolen, like other hostels! Showers and toilets are clean and there never is a wait.

The manager and cleaner here are very friendly and any questions can be answered. The single and double dorms are decorated in a modern fashion more suitable for backpackers.

I have never had a problem with the noise, music is played throughout the day and it is never loud. A number of movies are played from 7.30pm.The roofed courtyard provides a friendly atmosphere to chat, eat and drink with cheap drinks available from the Bar open from 4pm.

Overall a friendly hostel, only 10 minutes work to the city centre. Often its peoples own attitude that puts a downer on their stay!

Annie's Place picked us up from the airport for a flat fee of $15. Nice telephone manner. We booked in for 2 nights.

Arrived at the dorm, checked in to the room, the guy already in there seemed a bit dodgy but nice enough. The room also stank of weed. A comment was passed by the management, but was generally overlooked. Explored Adelaide, bought tea, cooked tea, and watched The Beach in the courtyard. Got a good vibe from the hostel. Me and my boyfriend went back to the room for a bit of personal time, but the dodgy guy followed us straight back. We then went out for drinks while the rest of our friends went to bed. Got a text an hour later asking us to return immediately due to the dodgy guy rifling through our bags. Got back, discovered a laptop and camera missing. Called the police. In the meantime got the management involved, but he was more interested in the bread being stolen from the kitchen, not a laptop and camera being stolen from our room. He also wanted to brag that this was the first time anything had been stolen in 6 months. In short, the management was rubbish. Police arrived, woke up dodgy guy, found laptop and camera under his pillow, dodgy guy arrested, Just before dodgy arrested he pulled out a meat cleaver from under his bed. Once the guy had been taken away we didn't sleep all night and checked into Adelaide Central YHA (which, by the way is the best hostel we have stayed in so far). We eventually got our 2nd night refunded by Annie's Place.

While the hostel itself isn't bad, the lack of security and intervention by the management is questionable.

One of the best hostels i visited in my 12 years of travelling.I stayed at Annies for more than 2 weeks and me and my friends really enjoyed every minute of it. I cannot understand people writing all this crap. The stuff was very helpful, day and night, and the cleaners working hard to clean the mess, some guys left over to keep this wonderful place nice and clean! There was every evening a movie on in the courtyard, very familiar...
We had also fun to use the full equipped kitchen, cooking nice food all together.
So please don't believe, what this people wrote ...i still cannot believe it.....
Go stay at Annies and make your own point of view !!! bye , ...the world traveller

I stayed in this hostel for 6 days and I had a great time. The staff were really friendly, and its really close to the main streets of Adelaide, and the train station.
I stayed in a 6 bed ensuite female room. The room was huge, and the bathroom was average, but it was clean. There is a curfew in the bar, so it was never too noisy. Also had a TV in the room.
The free internet wasn't working, which was a shame, but I would reccommend this hostel to anyone travelling to Adelaide.

I am struggling to find words to describe the state that this hostel is in. The rooms just generally look grotty and the lack of windows mean that the build up of damp on the walls is unbeliveable. I took 3 showers a day to get the musty stench off me but I was still left feeling dirty. I actually cried myself to sleep on my damp linen the last night! Please stay somewhere else, it's the sort of place your mother would hate. I asked my friend how he felt lying in bed and he described the feeling as being similar to the one you feel when you watch E.T turn white.
