Don't stay at Buxton Manor if you're expecting the same old, same old hotel. Come here if you're expecting a charming retreat with character and personality.
We stayed in The Butler's Apartment, a two-bedroom, one bath (and wow, what a bathroom), a kitchen and a sitting room. The original house has been cut up into separate, self-contained apartments, and this one has the original butler's pantry as the kitchen, and a very cool cellar under the kitchen with a beautiful old table that seats six comfortably. We didn't use it, as it's winter here, but I imagine in summer it would be cool and comfortable to enjoy a meal down there.
It's hard to describe the way the apartment is furnished. Personality is abundant, and it's as if we are staying in someone's home, and that someone is a world traveler who loves to collect various things as mementoes of his travels. You just have to see it.
Oh -- and the bathroom -- it's a huge room, with a claw-foot tub (a shower has been fitted in) and an Edwardian sink, according to the owner the largest he's ever seen. Leaded-glass windows that open out, and loads of hooks and towels and towel racks. The floor is tiled, terra cotta, in a design I've seen around SA so I think it's typical of this area. Very nicely done. The owner also said this is the original bathroom for the house.
The gardens are beautiful, even in winter...and I would love to see them in summer.
The house is in North Adelaide, and the main shopping and dining street is within easy walking distance. If you want to sightsee within Adelaide there are a number of public transportation options that you can use, and if you have a car all the better.
We took a chauffered tour of the Barossa Valley which was very nice, and then rented a car to drive up into the Adelaide Hills to see Kangaroos and Koala, and then went over to Hahndorf. Just had a super day.
I would not hesitate to recommend this experience to a friend, and if we ever get the chance (and I hope we do) to come back, we will try to stay here again.
