“Great place to stay in Adelaide”
Reviewed 28 January 2011

Buxton Manor was a fantastic place to stay in Adelaide, had a very pleasant stay for four days, completely relaxing, and exactly what we were looking for. We stayed in the Garden & Loft and it was very roomy, definately recommended for those who want to chill out and enjoy Adelaides charms. The decor was arts & crafts which we loved, and the backyard and bbq area were great. The only thing I could of wished for was a slightly better bathroom.

We are frequent visitors to Adelaide and were attracted to the notion of staying in a sewlf contained apartment within a Heritage property. The website images and description were enticing, the experience however was a total let down.

The apartment was spacious but the rooms and decor seem to be 'shabby chic' with an abundance of bric a brac which was totally at odds with the refined history of the property. Everything had a musty dusty old feel. The rooms were dark and the state of repair poor (which is sad for such a residence).

The overall value was poor.

Don't stay at Buxton Manor if you're expecting the same old, same old hotel. Come here if you're expecting a charming retreat with character and personality.

We stayed in The Butler's Apartment, a two-bedroom, one bath (and wow, what a bathroom), a kitchen and a sitting room. The original house has been cut up into separate, self-contained apartments, and this one has the original butler's pantry as the kitchen, and a very cool cellar under the kitchen with a beautiful old table that seats six comfortably. We didn't use it, as it's winter here, but I imagine in summer it would be cool and comfortable to enjoy a meal down there.

It's hard to describe the way the apartment is furnished. Personality is abundant, and it's as if we are staying in someone's home, and that someone is a world traveler who loves to collect various things as mementoes of his travels. You just have to see it.

Oh -- and the bathroom -- it's a huge room, with a claw-foot tub (a shower has been fitted in) and an Edwardian sink, according to the owner the largest he's ever seen. Leaded-glass windows that open out, and loads of hooks and towels and towel racks. The floor is tiled, terra cotta, in a design I've seen around SA so I think it's typical of this area. Very nicely done. The owner also said this is the original bathroom for the house.

The gardens are beautiful, even in winter...and I would love to see them in summer.

The house is in North Adelaide, and the main shopping and dining street is within easy walking distance. If you want to sightsee within Adelaide there are a number of public transportation options that you can use, and if you have a car all the better.

We took a chauffered tour of the Barossa Valley which was very nice, and then rented a car to drive up into the Adelaide Hills to see Kangaroos and Koala, and then went over to Hahndorf. Just had a super day.

I would not hesitate to recommend this experience to a friend, and if we ever get the chance (and I hope we do) to come back, we will try to stay here again.

We stayed for 3 nights in August 09 in the Garden and Loft apartment and loved it. Full of Victorian era charm and not mass produced like many of the chain accommodation around these days.

The North Adelaide setting was lovely and the gardens around the Manor look fantastic under the care of caretaker, Paul. The apartment is very spacious and the beds are comfortable and generous. The Loft bedroom is especially worth a mention with its great view and welcoming decor.

Lastly, the service was second to none with phone calls to make sure we had arrived safely and to ensure we were happy with our stay. Very personal and professional touches.

My only suggestions are to install digital television and to change to energy saving light globes :)
