“Wow!”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

After a week of wining and dining in the wine regions of SA, local friends suggested we eat at Kenji's. Our experience of Japanese cuisine in the past had been less than impressive - sushi trains, restaurants where cooks literally throw the food at your bowl etc. How different this was. It would be one of the most memorable meals we have had. Fresh food, so artistically presented, and delivered to each diner by Kenji himself, who quietly explained how each main course was created and what it contained. The venison was excellent; the pork belly was beautifully slow cooked with a sublime sauce . Presentation of desserts equally masterful. We also enjoyed marvelling at what was being served to other tables. The restaurant is small , tastefully decorated in a modest Japanese style, runs efficiently, and the staff are delightful. We would love to return.

“One of the top restaurants in Adelaide”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

Kenji is named after the chef and owner. He came to Adelaide, liked the city and stayed. He and his wife (who runs front of house) have now become an Adelaide Institution. Innovative food which blends the best of traditional Japanese with locally sourced fresh produce to produce flavours unique to this restaurant. Excellent staff who are at all times friendly and knowledgeable. Those of us who have come to love this restaurant over the years hope that Kenji and his wife do not become too famous so that they are then enticed to move from Adelaide. If you are a visitor and staying in the Adelaide CBD it is worth a short taxi fare to Hutt street, on the city fringe to experience Kenji.

“Excellent Food, Outstanding Service, Expensive”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

We decided to try Kenji recently for our wedding anniversary having read the reviews here. Overall, I'd say the reviews are very accurate. The restaurant itself is quite small, but very welcoming and pleasant. The menu had a range of really interesting food that does tend to remind one of the "Iron Chef" tag that was mentioned by someone else; Japanese food with more than a touch of gourmet about it.

We opted for the 5 course degustation with upgrade. This took us on an interesting food journey that was certainly delightful. Some of the dishes were nothing short of exquisite, and the quantities were well balanced and ample. Each dish was greeted with a full explanation of what was on the plate, and some with a suggested method of eating.

There were some excellent Japanese beers available that are certainly uncommon. The wine list was very good and although we didn't indulge, I'm sure the Sake selection would satisfy the most discerning of tastes.

Food excellent. Service absolutely outstanding. Price north of $280 for 2 people with a few glasses of vino is probably stretching the relationship for what it is.

“Japanese Food”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

We had the sushi boat, and there is so much seafood, it is very good value, most was nigri sushi, there were only 5 slices of sushi rolls. The scallop was beautiful as was the salmon and tuna, but there were a few slices of stringy, sinewy sashimi. I ordered the duck for main, the leg was nice and tender, the breast overcooked. The service was very good, and out water glasses were filled often. I did not have time for dessert, but they had many to chose from...next time.

“Excellent as usual”
Reviewed 3 May 2014

We always go to Kenji for special celebrations as the food and service are always excellent. This time they did not disappoint with mains of pork belly and steak prepared in a uniquely Japanese style. The presentation of the food is always a treat.
