“Working class guys”
Reviewed 18 May 2012

We regularly send a team up the Coober Pedy for work and we have found the staff to be courteous and very helpful. The rooms are clean, tidy and nice and cool and nothing is too much trouble for the staff. We highly recommend a stay at Radeka's. It is a lovely underground experience.

barbies with sudcase are crying, if not everything looks like a 5 star hotel for a price of a hamburger. this location is a hundert time better than each military base i had in my life.
and rules are there to be fallowed.
absolut clean, very friendly stuff (philipinos) and free pick up and drop off service from the bus station (to order)! by the owner.
at least paid me back the money in cash which was demanded to much by the travel agency how bookt me in.

Radeka's Underground Motel is clean, well maintained, centrally located (a plus on a hot Coober Pedy summer midday) staffed by helpful and friendly backpackers - and an experience so singular and steeped in Australian Mythos (With Capital Letters) that you'd be silly to miss out.

Room types vary - we stayed in a typical Coober Pedy dugout tunneled into the side of a hill. A door in the hill led into a hotel corridor drilled out of solid rock. The front rooms have windows, deeper rooms are lit strictly by artificial illumination.
Our room - at the end of the hall, deep under the hill, was very dark and very quiet and solidly FUN - and if you needed a getaway after a long project or period of stress, you could quite happily sleep the clock around in there without noticing - you can only tell that it's daylight outside by the small circular smears of light left on the floor from the ventilation shafts in the roof.

The real appeal of Radeka's Downunder is the backpacker accommodations. The backpacker halls are deep underground - A deep stairway drilled out of the rock opens into a vast series of vaulted halls - cool, dark, shadowy and echoing, each gallery seems to open into another deeper one - it's a staggering mind-trip of a place, halfway between a Tolkein-esque Fantasy and something out of an RPG game.

Accommodation in all categories is basic - bunk beds and mattresses in the backpackers vaults, simple beds of all sorts and en-suites in the rooms, but everything was clean, functional and well maintained.

And FAR more fun than a basic motel ought to be!!!!

Room Tip: If you're a backpacker on a budget - stay down in the halls and earn major bragging points. If...

I thought a stay in the underground motel / backpackers would be cool. However, it wasn't really underground, more like a motel dug in to a little hill and a poky room without windows. The old guy seemed friendly enough. It didn't feel particularly unique or special hotel but that doesn't mean it was bad - it was ok! (As for Cooper Pedy, its worth a drive through, but drive through it and don't stop!)

I won't say a lot about this "backpack", just that it was the most terrible experience I had, mainly about the staff manager. An old sticky guy, very very rude with his clients, he nearly insulted us for 5 min late on the checkout. I Will never ever recommended that place for anyone. Even the underground experience is not the best of cooper peddy.

Room Tip: Don't choose any here.

I stayed in an above-ground, en-suite room. It was ideal as a base to explore the town and to access tours without the need of a car. Restaurants were also very close. The room was clean and comfortable. It had all I that needed for a short stay, including aircon and fridge. Staff were friendly and very helpful. Thank you for adding to a very enjoyable holiday!

This place is actually quite a cool place to stay as it's underground, staff really really helpful, spotless clean, off street parking, tv room, big kitchen. Only downside....not very secure as no door on your room, lack of powerpoints in the room.
