We were most impressed with the displays and underground walk-through mine experience with an excellent guide.

We did the tour ($26 for the family) and is gave a good overview of the opal mining. The information boards and fossil display are also good. The tour also takes you into an old opal mine so you can get to experience that. This tour doesn't go into as much detail on the opal mining process as Tom's working mine tour but has a good short film and other displays (ie fossils and history of the area).

Most helpful woman gave us clear information about choosing our opal, explained the differences between solid, doublet and triplet of which we would have had no idea otherwise. We wern't rushed or pressured into buying anything. Our Opal came with a warranty as well. Most impressed!

I think we just managed to catch Umoona in a bit of a lull - the interpretive centre was closed and the film was already in progress when we arrived. But we enjoyed the displays a LOT (The opalised fossils were lovely) and the shop was fun to look through as well. Very nice and informative staff.
