“Very ordinary motel - go for one of the underground options instead.”
Reviewed 2 February 2014 via mobile

The Opal Inn is conveniently placed just opposite the Shell garage as you enter the town, and it's close to the excellent Greek restaurant (Tom and Mary's) which was sadly closed for the summer. But it's really boring. OK price, with a summer offer at $110, but no character, lots of dogs and a few drunks hanging around, boring and pretty expensive menu. During earlier visits we've always stayed in one of the underground hotels, where you don't need air con, and although there was (noisy) air con, it just had too much to do, as presumably the room had not been used for a while and the temperature at 8pm was still above 40°. So although it's easy to find, and makes for a quick getaway the next morning, it ought to be a last resort.

The staff in the hotel where you book and pay are lovely. I did not enter the hotel beyond reception.
The caravan park to the rear of the property is situated on the corners of busy roads, busy not like a city, but instead huge trucks rumble past at night just when you are trying to get to sleep. There was a verbal slanging match out the back of the hotel on the Saturday night that went on for around 2 hours, when we were packing up to leave (at first light having had very little sleep!) I mentioned it to the caravan couple next door, "No dear, but then I don't wear my hearing aids at night..." The majority of the occupants were in caravans, and gray nomads, so as my son kept pointing out "but we've got lovely neighbours mum" it is very hard stony ground, we were in a camper trailer, so off the ground, but very, very close, to your neighbours. Think we will give this park a miss next time, the showers are coin operated, and there are no kitchen facilities.

Stayed here for three nights and found the amenities clean, no water to vans but water was availible for drinking. We use our van tanks for the time we were there. Water is precious in Coober Pedy! The staff were friendly and helpful to book local tours.

On the way to Darwin for our annual fishing trip we encounted car problems near Coober Pedy. After getting towed into town we booked in to the Opal Inn. We got the 120 $ per night rooms. Beds good. Tv only has 5 channels. Not much to do in Coober pedy that doesn't revolve around opals. But then place grows on you.

We needed a decent nights rest after being on the road for 3 days and sleeping rough in our car in some dodgy caravan parks. Opal Inn was just right for us.

Reception was very friendly and mindful of our security, warning us to not leave anything in our car. Like many outback towns, Coober Pedy is suffering some real social problems with the aborigines - a real shame. We didn't explore the town because A. We were exhausted and B. we simply didn't feel safe.

We enjoyed a good nights sleep. Clean room and facilities. The Bistro provides hearty meals that are big portions and good value. Once again, very friendly staff.

We particularly enjoyed the little grassed oasis outside of the budget rooms - chilled out in the evening with a beer.

Will return for sure when we travel in a more 'holiday' frame of mind and have more time. Interesting place.

Room Tip: No swimming pool or fitness centre - I accidentally clicked on them and you can't undo on the Ip...
