Waves and Wildlife Cottages
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 8 April 2014

I recently travelled to KI with a friend and we found Waves and Wildlife cottage to be the perfect place for our 4 night stay. Really enjoyed being able to come back to the cottage in the afternoon and sit out on the balcony with a beautiful and unique view of the ocean and kangaroos grazing right at our door step. The beach at Stokes Bay is beautiful and the little cafe is a handy option for a quick lunch. The owners are lovely and laid back which made the stay even more enjoyable. I would recommend Waves and Wildlife to anyone visiting the Island!

Stayed in Cottage 1 with a friend for four nights - fully self contained, clean and comfortable, fabulous view, beautiful location and very reasonably priced. Paul and Katya made everything so easy - all in all would recommend to anyone! Stokes Bay is a beautiful part of the island - there is a cafe during the day and not much else. Home by dusk to avoid driving at night on the island with so many animals around, but with a BBQ, balcony and fully contained kitchen this was perfect!

Room Tip: We only had two people in Cottage One, but it had two double rooms and a single room so could have f...

My family loved Waves and Wildlife four years ago so much that we had to return to this magical spot again. I am longing to return even now.
The cottages are fairly basic but are clean, bright and well equipped with everything you need. The real magic is all in the fields surrounding each cottage. On the large deck you can sit all day and watch the kangaroos hopping happily along their way, eating, boxing, courting and looking after their roos. Behind the roos the ocean unfolds, making the viewing devine. It is simply the best kanga watching spot I found in all of the places we have gone in Oz. Peaceful and beautiful.

When the dusk rolls in and the kangas retire for the night the wallabies bounce over the hill to have their feed in front of the cottages. If you are quiet you can hear their soft thumps and as your eyes adjust to the night you can spot the little guys hippitty hopping here and there. They are very shy but have sadly become more accustomed to humans because some visitors feed them.
*The information at the site ask that you do not do this and it is too bad that some people jeopardize the health and welfare of the animals just to get a personal close-up. Please refrain from feeding them! (If you want to feed some kangas go to Paul's Place - another magical experience!)

Paul and Katja are the perfect hosts, so casual we didn't even see them the first time we stayed. We had the pleasure of meeting them this visit only because we booked a tour at their wonderful animal rescue sanctuary 'Pauls Place'. I am not an advocate of zoos, petting or otherwise, and had a slight sense of hesitation before we went but it was immediately dispelled when we arrived for the tour. This is no zoo or animal exploitation; it is a true rescue sanctuary that is run with much love and (I imagine) gruelling hard work. Paul guides the tours himself and his boisterous, hilarious style draws everyone into the group. The animals are handled carefully and the impression I got was that we were visiting their space, they certainly did not exist for us! I highly reccommend the sanctuary and if Lou the Koala is willing, pay the 3 dollars to hold her - what an experience!

I can't thank Paul and Katja enough for allowing us to stay at their wonderful property and visit their magical sanctuary. I honestly think they should charge much more for both the privileges considering the cost of most things in Australia it seems ridiculously low. But maybe that's just part of the character of this amazing couple.

Room Tip: The cottages are all the similar except the number of bedrooms and share an equally brilliant view o...

As soon as I got inside this place I just have a big sigh, heaven!
The chalet is very clean, extremely well equipped, very comfortable indeed. My only gripe was the very uncomfortable and creaky bed.
The location, views and general wow factor are second to none.
Do yourself a favour, stock up on treats and a few bottles of wine to enjoy on the deck and sit out until you tire of the view - never.

Room Tip: Shopping is very limited on KI, plan ahead

Hi alisonka,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review.

We love the property and the Cottages and are so happy every time someone else does too and try very hard to provide something special for an affordable price.

We wish you had contacted us during your stay about sleep quality and the terrible bed. While internet reviews are great, they should not, in our opinion, replace communication between guests and any service provider. I believe I speak for all accommodation owners here. It is very important to most that guests have a great experience and it would have been very appreciated if you had contacted us about this during your stay and given us the opportunity to try and rectify this. We may have been able to do something, mattress cover, fix the bed or shift you to another Cottage.

Not only for your stay but as we cannot work out who you are, we now have no idea which bed is “so uncomfortable”, unless we sleep ourselves in one of the 16 beds at Waves & Wildlife.

All bed frames and other furniture are made by Barkuma, a company in Adelaide who employs only people with disabilities and produces quality furniture. All mattresses are good quality and we and friends/family have spent many nights there sleeping well so would love to know which Cottage you were in so we can address any problem for future guests.

If you could contact us direct it would be greatly appreciated and we are sad there was a negative aspect to your stay.

Warm regards,

Paul and Katja

I enjoyed this accommodation very much. They have an amazing view over Stokes bay, which I personally found one of the best places in Kangaroo island. The cottage was cozy and clean. I really liked the peaceful atmosphere, having dinner or breakfast with kangaroos in the garden and in front of an amazing view of the ocean. Whenever I go back to Kangaroo Island I'll consider this accommodation again.

Really nice place to spend some days even though we hapenned to be there when temperatures above 40 degrees.
Way to the beach secret and special and the beach great even for kids with its natural pool.
House cleans and nice and very well equipped.
We really enjoyed our 3 nights stay and the trips we made around this fantastic island.
