“Demole river retreat (Gaia )”

We particularly chose to stay at Gaia because of its remote situation, Eco credentials and access to wildlife. It was such a veritable Garden of Eden (without the snakes!) that I am now writing my first ever review on Tripadvisor! We stayed for 3 nights and booked from the UK - the owner, Graham, was helpful and friendly at all times without being 'in your face'!

The kangaroos visited us on a regular basis and were a delight; we awakened one morning to find a sleepy koala outside our window, and there was a wealth of birds and wildlife with a myriad different colours. The starry sky was sublime, the quiet absolute....what more can I say?

The house was well laid out, comfortable and had an excellent log fire which was great in the evenings.

Just make sure you bring all you need as there is nothing modern nearby!

De Mole River Retreat (or Gaia) is worth the drive in because you are rewarded with peace & quiet, visits from the local kangaroo mob (the photos on the website are accurate!) as well as breathtaking stars at night. We didn't spend much time in the day here, but used it as a base for exploring the north coast including Snellings Beach, Stokes Bay and a couple of other places the owner gave us directions to see. The accommodation is spacious and spotless. You do have to bring everything with you, not linen/towels, but all food. If you want to see wildlife on Kangaroo Island you should stay here, but absolutely stay off the roads at night, or ideally from dusk, because the wildlife is abundant.

We stayed three nights at Demole River Retreat - and this was truly an unique experience that will stay with us for a long time. I don`t think you will be able to find a place anything like it as when it comes to wildlife and nature.
It is a pretty long drive on unsealed roads to get there, so do as recommended: stack up on groceries before checking in! It is remote, in the middle of the woods and even though the house is big and in ok standard, it is not a luxury accomodation. The water from the tap looks yellowbrownish, a funny adverse of the red gum trees in the woods close by. Still, it is clean and no problem for brushing teeth in or having a shower in.
As we arrived we carried in our suitcases and started to explore the surroundings of the retreat. In just a few minutes we were surrounded by kangaroos and wallabies.
During our stay we also got close up to possums, huge lizards, we even encountered a tiny scorpion!
At daytime we went to the beaches. Kangaroo Beach is a beautiful beach with almost no waves. Perfect for swimming. We also went to Snake Lagoon - you have to go for a hike to get there. It is definetly worth the hike, and the beach is beautiful. But -the sea here is wilder and ruffer - not recommended for swimming because of the strong currents.
In the evenings we enjoyed local food & wine and spent time on the terrace, just gazing at the stars.
If you are adventurous and travel to experience wildlife, "the real deal" and a night sky unlike no other, this is the place for you. As for me, it was one of the highlights of the entire trip to Australia.

Our stay at Demole was nothing less than perfect. We couldn't have picked a more idyllic place to go for that true getting back to nature experience. The longer we spent at 'Gaia', the more we fell in love with it. Graham the owner was a very hospitable and nothing was too much trouble. We'll be back.

We stayed three nights at Graham’s De Mole river retreat – and it truly is a very special place. The cabin is not a luxury accommodation with AC and Bose sound system – but it has something few other places have. A true wildlife and nature experience unlike any theme park, zoo or other manmade wildlife encounters around. You have seen the other reviews, so you get the picture. The cabin is a considerable drive on unsealed roads through farm- and bush land. You really get a feeling of being away from other people. The peace and quiet was mind-blowing, and at night we just laid out on the deck gazing up on the brightest night skies we have ever seen. It has a nearby beach which is stunning, and best of all almost completely private due to the remoteness of the place. Graham is a warm and welcoming host; his knowledge of the place will help you plan a perfect getaway. Stock up on great local produce (freshwater marron, fish, honey and wine) and head out to De Mole river and enjoy a true Aussie nature experience.

This stay was over a few nights, after having camped at the eastern end of the Island for a few. With my wife and another couple, this proved to be the perfect way to finish our stay at this end of KI. Gaia is a delight, situated away from any of our 'normal' distractions. The remoteness was amazing and everything we needed was catered for. Host Graham is engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about his environment, which tends to rub off! The family of kangaroos living in the immediate area are the real locals here, providing an up close and personal experience with nature which leaves a lasting impression. We all came away smiling inwardly, calm and satisfied with our stay. This was a better than expected treat for us and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking modest, isolated serenity in reall Aussie bush location.

We went to Gaia for a pre-christmas break to get away from the hussle and bussle. Looking forward to the family of freindly roos headed by Bella (saved by Graeme who built the beautiful place). We were greeted by her & her brood every day, which was a much welcomed end to our travels around the area. They were sooo tame & cute to watch, and especially enjoyed Bella's kisses, so tender & sweet. We felt so special. A perfect back drop to sit & sip a glass or two. The star filled sky at night blasted our senses until we fell asleep, only to wake in the morning by the patter of roos eagerly coming to say good morning & peer through the tall picture windows at us. A delightful retreat we will never forget. Thanks to Graeme for sharing such a wonderful place, an experience we would Never ever have had without his foresight & generosity. We would recommend it to anyone who wants to be adventurous enough to venture off the beaten track...and who are looking for a bit of freedom, love & that extra special wildlife touch. A place to rekindle the spirit.
