“Great value stay for business”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2011

I have stayed in Hobart on numerous occasions but whilst I use Tripadvisor for overseas this is the first time I used it for Australia. How narrow minded. Stayed at Hotel Collins after reading about it on Tripadvisor. It was good advice. Clean, friendly and good location. Behind the hospital, one small block from the city centre and two from the water. Salamanca Place is a nice 15-20 minute walk. Free broadband, in-house movies and free use of printer next to reception. No cable TV but to me that’s OK. Hotel is not flash but compares well to all those in Hobart. I received a great price on their website. Parking is in the Market Place parking station behind. Park close to the lift (there is no designated parking). On the ground floor (designated as Level 1) there is a covered passageway next to the lift. The passageway takes you to straight to the hotel. If it is raining you can nip in via the hotel restaurant on the corner. I will stay here again. By the way, best pancake breakfast is next to (part of) Customs House hotel – corner of Murray & Davey Streets. If you want to stay at the water Henry Jones Art Hotel is good. Seafood restaurant on the water are only so-so. Shops and restaurants at Salamanca Place are all quite good. Parking station at Salamanca Place ($3.60 for 3hrs is undercover and you walk straight into Salamanca Square.)

Room Tip: Best prices on hotel website.

The location was very good, about 10 minute walk to Salimanco, which is the super fun area to hang out at night. A great foodie street with restaurants of similar quality to what you would find in Melbourne. A really great treat.

As far as the hotel was concerned, it is very high quality. From the outside, I was a bit worried and thought it looked a bit '80s. Fortunately, the rooms are very nicely furnished and it is quite beautiful. The service is super friendly, there is wonderful coffee in the lobby, the beds were great.

What was really subpar was the fact that we were paying good money for a suite only to be in a 2nd floor room which overlooked the parking garage. It was one of the worst views I have ever had from a hotel - we could see all of the valves and pipes from the A/C system. There was no sunlight and the only consolation was that we were there mostly only at night. It might have been room 202 if I can recall. That said, the furnishings were very nice and there was a kitchen. The other thing that I hated was that the bathroom had nasty bright florescent bulbs that found blemishes I had never seen, and the shower doesn't drain fast enough, so the floor is wildly flooded after every shower.

BUT...it is like a mini-W Hotel in Hobart, of all places. They have tried very hard, and I felt well looked after. I would give them another chance for a higher floor room and if the showers don't flood up there, and I would check out if I ever got the same room again. Just get rid of those damn light bulbs in the bathroom!!

A lovely nice woman works in the reception and made us feel right at home.

Room Tip: AVOID 2nd floor at ALL costs

Stayed here as a couple recently and found the value excellent! Free in-room movies (4 channels showing 2 movies per channel on a rotation), free in-room internet with a supplied cable, and free wifi and printing downstairs in the business lounge.

The bed was very very comfortable, the aircon easy to work, and the views from the very large windows were great too. Shower was hot and powerful, and the bathroom was tastefully appointed and decorated. Some thought has gone into the layout of the rooms as well, just by the way they are laid out.

The Hotels restaurant was ok value, but had very limited options for breakfast if you don't like eggs. (I don't, if you do, then congrats, you'll love it!) Great location too, its about a 5 minute walk to salamanca square and the same to the centre of the city for shopping. Can't fault the hotel, probably the best I've stayed at for the value.

Oh, could hear a fair amount of road noise from the street, but even on friday night I could get some rest without a problem.

got into hobart at sunset - arrived by taxi at the hotel collins. great location - walking distance to the port, salamanca square, and the shops on collins. newer hotel, with a minimalistic room - but the people at the desk were just great! very nice breakfast - people were coming in as regulars from off the street. they had two free computers in their lounge - which helped us a great deal. nicely recommeded!

This is a great modern stylish hotel. Check in was smooth wiith every request honoured. The rooms are well designed. The superfast internet is free, the Business centre works well and the staff could not be more friendly and helpful. I would never stay anywhere else in Hobart.

This hotel is fantastic... Amazingly clean and modern with friendly, very efficient staff. It's close to town and only 7-10 min walk to salamanca area. Wifi would've been nice but the Internet connection was fine and the car parking situation is a but of a pain initially but no problems at all once you get the hang of it.

Clean, comfortable, intimate and tastefully modern. It's a new hotel so everything looks nice and shiny- and the bed is very comfortable! The direct view of Mt Wellington from our 7th floor room is superb. Small-ish rooms but adequate if you're in Hobart for business or sightseeing. Parking costs extra at $15 capped/24 hours. We drove straight into the marketplace carpark and it was pretty straightforward to find the hotel from there. Great value overall, especially compared to Salamanca Inn and the Hotel Grand Chancellor where I was going to originally book. Thanks to the positive reviews here at TripAdvisor I could change my mind at the last minute and I saved about $100 over the four nights. The restaurant is okay but I think a little too expensive for the quality of the food. NCafe down the road, a little malaysian restaurant, was absolutely delicious and good value though!
