We had a performance by 2 actors which was excellent.
Visitors are involved in the performance at all times and it brings home to us a greater understanding of the lives the female convicts lived. If you go to this site you must make time to see this performance.

We debated about just looking around the site and going on the tour, after reading the reviews we decided to do the Heritage Tour and boy, are we happy we did! If we did not have the excellent and informative guide, I would have been lost and probably a bit disappointed. There is not much for signage (and to be honest, I get a bit bored reading things on my own) as this is still a developing site with little funding. We learned quite a bit about Australian convict history and what they went through while staying at the female factory, quite shocking! Very interesting and informative. Recommended!

Do not make the mistake of visiting this location and not doing the tour. There is very little remaining to look at, but the 15$ 45min tour we took was awesome. Very personal, lots of details about individuals, a totally different experience to Port Arthur.

Hearing the personal story of one woman from this prison was a unique experience and really brought it to life for us. It was moving, informative and sometimes funny. The actors do a fantastic job.

We weren't able to go on a tour so did the self guided walk. There is not much left unfortunately of the original buildings - two of the five yards have gone completely. However the site has been preserved as well as it could be and there is plenty of information about the site available.
