We had initially booked a room in one of the more well known waterfront hotels in Hobart. After reading trip advisor reviews and checking out the price of this hotel, we took a chance and stayed at the Fountainside instead. We are glad we did. It suited our lifestyle and most importantly, our budget. The money we saved on a 7 night stay in comparison to the other well known hotel paid for our car hire and fuel for the week.

The hotel itself is only a couple of blocks from the waterfront, and shopping area of the CBD, an easy 10 minute stroll. The staff were courteous, efficient and helpful without being gushingly false. We liked that.

There is free on site parking and free wifi. They also stock the mini bar with a range of drinks and treats which are very reasonably priced, similar to what you would pay in a convenience store. Its worth considering this when you are calculating the overall cost of your stay elsewhere.

The in house restaurant serves quality, well priced, hearty meals from a limited but adequate menu. I can vouch for the quality and portion sizes which left me feeling very content! Likewise, there is a very affordable hearty buffet breakfast. I think it was approx $11.00 per head.

Any negatives? Only thing that comes to mind is that the traffic noise is audible and depending on where your room is the lift can be a bit noisy. Nothing excessive but worthy of mention.

I would sincerely recommend this hotel if you, like us, are of the opinion that so long as it is clean and comfortable, why not save the money you would otherwise spend on some of the "Grander" hotels nearby and put it to better use on other aspects of your holiday.

Room Tip: If you are noise sensitive, The higher floors may have reduced traffic noise. Likewise request a roo...

I stayed for 2 nights in a room on the 7th floor.

Friendly efficient service by staff.

Spacious room and bathroom with reasonably priced mini bar items.

Located approximately 5 minutes walk from Elizabeth Street mall and 10 - 15 minutes form the docks area.

Excellent value fully cooked breakfast in dining room also available.

Would be happy to stay here again.

We stayed here for a couple of nights while touring Tasmania. The hotel is very satisfactory and we had a good stay. The prices for breakfast and meals are a bargain as are the prices in the mini bar. A very refreshing attitude in this day and age! Recommended.

This is a budget type hotel but someone with a brain has designed the rooms. Very comfortable king beds, good quality linen, spotless and up to date shower room, huge TV, plenty of space, iron and board, etc etc. Reading lights you can read by, aircon that works, the list of good things other hotels don't seem to be able to manage goes on and on! Even a guest laundry where you can coin-op your laundry quickly and efficiently. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Downsides? The breakfast buffet was plentiful but unless you time your arrival well the eggs might be a bit overdone, but the choice of cereals and so on was adequate. Decor of the dining room more cafe than fine dining but the evening meal provision was welcome after a long day doing things. Good choice of local wines and beers, and all very sensibly priced (ditto the room's minibar). Free wifi in your room although getting logged on required a bit of help to start with.

Within a level walk of the harbour and shops, and has its own car park if you have a car. Pretty conveniently placed for most things.

Altogether the sort of hotel we like as a base where everything you actually need is there and works and you don't feel you are paying for stuff you don't want.

Would definitely recommend. We had a standard room but we believe there are fancier ones on the top floor!

The Fountainside is conveniently located only a 10 minute walk from the centre of town, the harbour and waterfront. The rooms are clean, modern and our king size bed was very comfortable. Despite overlooking a busy roundabout, we were not disturbed by traffic noise. The mini bar prices were some of the most reasonable we have come across! The nearest Woolworths was only 2 streets away inside a shopping mall with a variety of shops and restaurants. The staff were helpful and friendly. The buffet style hot and cold breakfast choices were tasty - especially the locally sourced sausages! The free car parking was very useful and when the car park was full, the staff would move their cars to create space. The hotel's location was very convient for exploring the surrounding area.

The Fountainside is a semi-renovated mid-rise hotel on the edge of Downtown Hobart. It is within walking distance of the waterfront, Salamanca, and the harbor seafront restaurants.

Location advantages: it is convenient for day trips out of Hobart and within walking distance of the wharves/restaurants in Hobart.

Location disadvantage: it is located on a "roundabout" and noisy...even on the top
renovated floors. If you are a light sleeper, this is not the place for you. If you are a heavy sleeper, "have at it!". It is a good value for the money.

Breakfast is about AUD$11.80 and is sufficient to get your day started. The evening meals are adequate if you are too tired to go out, after a full day of exploration. The soup and salad bar are good; the main courses are nice and all in the low AU$20 range.

Parking can be a problem if you come back after 6 pm, but management will always find a parking place for your car.

Room Tip: Top floor renovated room is about the best you are going to get.

whilst a little dated, this is a terrific budget hotel with modern, refurbished clean rooms for a Hobart visit. Close to the dockside restaurants and CBD, free parking, inexpensive restaurant, free parking and good friendly service. highly recommend for 'mature' travellers seeking a relaxing visit.
