“Great Stay”
Reviewed 6 October 2013

We stayed in a two bedroom suite, the beds were comfortable and loved the furniture, the heaters were great and had no problem heating the whole suite, yes the bathrooms and kitchen do need updating but the staff where great, the breakfast was wonderful the food great.

Room Tip: we stayed in room 49 had views to the oval and Hobart city which was fine from upstairs, and over th...

We had a great stay for a week in a superior room with kitchenette and sitting room. The guest laundry is a bonus. It would be an added bonus if the wifi was free! I joined the priority guest scheme for Rydges Hotels which enabled a cheaper room rate together with other options.

I was quite put off by the reviews for this property and would not have stayed there by choice. A shortage of Hobart accomodation dictated otherwise.

I stayed in Room 53 which is at the back of the property overlooking North Hobart Oval and the city of Hobart. It was tricky to get to and required winding my way through the front part of the Hotel, out the back down a walkway and further down to another wing and my room. A bit tricky, particularly as it was raining.

My initial impression of the room was of a depressing badly maintained dark wood panelled space. On pulling the curtains across the window, part of the curtain pulled away from the track as the material was rotten. Seats were threadbare and very old fashioned.

Once I got over the shock of this, the upside dawned on me that the Unit consisted of 4 rooms including a generous size sitting room with heater, TV, small table and three chairs and of all things a cleverly disguised pull down bed. The Unit also contained a generous size Kitchenette and a biggish bathroom and toilet and a separate bedroom. In all a sizeable unit. Windows in the Kitchenette, and Sitting Room provided a charming view of the Hobart City lights.

Unfortunately there was no heater in the bedroom which I would have thought essential in Hobart. The Unit is not airconditioned.

The next morning however revealed a picturesque view of Hobart and the Derwent river. Breakfast is taken in the old historic house. The dining room and conference rooms are all solid, period and well maintained and the breakfast was excellent. The breakfast buffet was quite varied with some nice different touches. I enjoyed a super Eggs Benedict. The dining room has a very pleasant aspect out over the city and the Derwent and is altogether a lovely room.

Service at this establishment was pleasant and helpful. The price was right at $129.00 per night. These factors coupled with the excellent breakfast caused me to raise my rating from 2 stars to 3 stars.

The sad fact is that this could be an elegant and high class establishment if it had a decent makeover. The room was clean, but just dreadfully tired and run down. It would be good for a family.

Take note however that it is a 5 or 6 minute cab ride out of the CBD, so if you want to be in the centre of the city don't stay here unless you are prepared to take a cab or spend the time walking. The Hotel is set in an old and elegant part of the city and I got the impression that a walk around the neighbourhood would reveal some interesting old houses.

The photos on the website of this hotel are completely misleading. I was dumped in a room way out the back with a grotty kitchenette and bathroom, lounge room with two very old and uncomfortable chairs and a bedroom with 2 king single beds. The heating couldn't heat the whole unit, the bedroom was freezing. The place is grotty and outdated, and the staff very unhelpful. This is not an option for business travellers. Stay elsewhere.

So you're looking to book accommodation for yourself and a few colleagues and you notice a Rydges property, so you're thinking, "Rydges....they're always clean, good quality". Then you look at the website photos and you're thinking, "Yep, nice. Typical nice Rydges property".....and then you think, "Well it's Rydges, you can't go wrong" and so you book.
And then you arrive and the first thing you're met with is rudeness from reception, for no apparent reason apart from the old, "coz I can" reason. Okaaaay then.

Then you meet up with a colleague as you're walking to your room (which is NOT part of the "historic" building" and you learn that they were also greeted with the "coz I can" rudeness from reception.
And then you open your room door and you walk in...................
...........and you drop your bags and look around...........and then you start to laugh, coz this is a joke, right? Where are the hidden cameras?
Then you realise.........this is NOT a joke. The joke is.....you paid Rydges prices for a 2 star 1980's style budget roadside motel.
The whole room was grimy...the stove, the fridge, the carpet.....the WHOLE place was just downright grotty. The curtain rail was broken, hooks broken, 1980s drapes hanging by good luck alone. A build up of dust and worse around the toilet. Very old and dirty 1980s pine chairs...something that even the Salvos would reject......and you've paid RYDGES prices........
the bathroom.....1980s tiles, lifting tiles, mouldy grout, black fleks on the mirror....juxtaposed with the Rydges bathroom toiletries...it just looked absurd.
Add to that...this property is some distance from the CBD.
I can not believe that Rydges would put their name and reputation to this old (NOT retro...OLD and grotty) propery that is below even the current day budget property standards......and yet it's a Rydges!
Look at the photos from Tripadvisor reviewers, NOT the ones from the property, because they are NOT a true reflection of my room and that of the colleagues I was travelling with.
Oh....2 stars because the bed was super comfy and the linen was clean.

Very dated rooms, very much overdue for a overhaul. Very easy to get lost around the complex. Plenty of parking. Heating needs improving especially for the colder months. Restaurant was great for both breakfast and dinner.

Nice location, close to some good cafes in Elisabeth St. The rooms are a bit dated but functional.
Excellent breakfast and excellent service. Right next to North Hobart footy oval for those interested in some Aussie rules.
