“3 day holiday stay”
Reviewed 20 March 2014

Stayed in the old main building in a Suite, no lift so needed to carry bags up stairs at 77 a bit of an effort. Found out later help was available. Room very comfortable, bed wonderful. Decoration very dated but in keeping with age of building. Bathroom spacious and clean. Staff very friendly and helpful. We stayed in Rm 29 with a wonderful view over Hobart and the Derwent. Room was quiet although the man next door (28) had problems with exhaust fan noise from kitchen. Used room service food not exceptional. However a lovely environment and we would stay again.

Room Tip: Rm 29 was quiet and with a view. Rm 28 noisy from kitchen

A character hotel with rooms within and in separate blocks. Room was clean and staff welcoming and very helpfull. Arrived before room was ready and the staff apologised and kept our bags. Hotel location is just on the edge of Hobart and a 30 min walk down the hill into the centre and local attractions.

We stayed in the Presidential Suite as it was the only room available. It was very comfortable and grand. The food in the dining room was delicious. The hotel is located very close to the centre of the city.

We flew into Hobart with a booking already made for Rydges Hotel. That was a big mistake. I suppose if you were driving a car the local would have been o.k. but on foot it was a nightmare. To begin the bathroom had no soap at all and I had to call reception and the girl brought us a few cakes but after that (and we were there a week) - no more soap deliveries or anything else for that matter. The bathroom was a disgrace and needed a full bottle of bleach to even begin to get rid of all the mould in shower, taps, walls. Yuk it made me sick - literally!

I wore sox when I walked around in the room because the carpets were so dirty the soles of my socks would turn black EVERY DAY by the time it was time for bed.

We really expected a Rydges hotel to be of top standard but it falls short of a backpackers!

The food was good but far too expensive to eat there more than 2 - 3 times.

We booked a deluxe room with 2 beds but it only had 1 so we complained and behold on one wall they pulled down another bed - NOT what I paid for and I told them so but it all falls on deaf ears.

We came back from a bus trip to Port Arthur and wanted to stop at the bar for a drink before returning to our room only to be told the bar didn't open till 5.00 pm. There were glasses and bottles all over the bar tables so obviously someone had been drinking.

Also When we would order room service we would put our trays outside when we were finished and they would stay there a good 12 hours before being collected.

The outside stairwell to our room was so completely covered with bird poop and heaven knows what else just to get to your room it made you feel ill.

In all my worldly travels I have never stayed at a more disgusting place and if anyone tells you different - you have to question their quality of life because I wanted to leave Tasmania the day I arrived after a taste of Rydges!

Room Tip: stay somewhere else!

We were booked into a room with 2 single beds -NOT what we booked online ! Got moved to another identical room with a Murphy Bed (pull down from the wall style) that looks like it's from the 1920's. The floor was filthy throughout the whole room, an we had to get housekeeping to re-mop the vinyl floor which left it worse than before she started. The carpet hasn't been vacuumed for I don't know how long and we can only imagine why there is a strong smell of bleach when you first open the door - what else are they trying to hide?
Over priced an outdated - if your going for the Old Heritage look doesn't mean it HAS TO BE OLD an sub standard. Oh an if your wanting a swim in the pool you better wear a scuba tank an a rope just incase you can't find your way out if the green muck - eeew!
The beds an rooms shown on their web site don't reflect what you are allocated. VERY disappointed with this accommodation an we do Not recommend this place to any travellers.
