“Neat Hotel, Great location”
Reviewed 29 January 2009

The customs House hotel is a very nice local place. The room was spacious and the beds were comfortable. The hotel is in a great location as it is very close to where the Salmanca markets would be, it's near the marina, and near to lots of resturants and cafe's. The attached resturant was good and the staff were very friendly. It's a great location for day trips, and for parking the car at night and walking to dinner.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind...
- there are about 3 floors and no elevator. The stairs are narrow, and there is a door at the top of the stairs that opens toward the stairs - we almost went tumbling the first time with our luggage.
- The bar is a Tab bar (a Tab is a bar for gambling/betting and is usually a bit more rowdy than an average bar/cafe). However, this does bring in some unique characters that are great for people watching!
- Weekday parking is across the street and it is an extra fee.

We have stayed at Customs House on our annual Tassie holiday each of the last four years. We always stay during December and January, and wouldn't stay anywhere else in Hobart.

Rooms are always clean.
Staff always friendly.
Yes, it can be a bit noisy especially on a weekend.

Breakfasts have always been a great way to start the day.
Restaurant is one of Tasmania's best.

The stairs can be a bit of a bother. Very narrow and steep, but you only take your bags up and down once.

Perfect location.

We stayed for 4 nights in a standard room. Arrived at about 11am, and were told that the room would be ready by 12:30, so we dropped our luggage off and wandered into the CBD to the Elizabeth St mall for some birthday shopping - a quick 5 minute walk away.

Upon check-in we were greeted with the largest standard room we had ever seen - room 6. It had a sitting room with (non operational) fireplace, TV, 2 tub chairs, a dining table, and a desk attached to the wall with bar fridge underneath, TV & tea & coffee provisions. The bathroom (no bath) was off this sitting room, and was fairly basic, but very clean/ new and a reasonable size. An added bonus was the heat lamps on the ceiling, which were more than welcome after I left my coat on the plane.

The bedroom was huge, and had a dual control electric blanket to keep us nice and toasty at night. There were wall heaters in both rooms, but only the bedroom one worked (although this didn't bother us). There was also a pedestal fan for summer.

There was a little clothes hanging rack, a small cupboard, bedside tables (no drawers) and another (non operational) fireplace, which provided a handy mantle to put our wallets etc.

Breakfast is included in the room rate - 1 choice from the menu, limited for vegetarians, as extras cost $2.50 each. So, when I ordered poached eggs with tomatoes that cost $2.50, although if you had poached eggs with bacon that was included as it was on the menu. The breakfasts were lovely, although a bit small.

Breakfast includes serve yourself filter coffee and a selection of tea bags and a hot water urn. There is also an espresso machine, but this costs extra.

We dined at the resturant on the first night - the fettucinni marinara is to die for!! The organic pinot noir was also superb.

On the last night we had vegeburgers in the pub - this was a bit of a dissapointment as the chips looked like they had gone a few rounds in the fat fryer, and they were cold, as was the deep fried vege patty.

All in all it was an excellent experience, and I would recommend the Customs House Hotel to anyone looking for a reasonable priced option in what we thought was the best location in Hobart.

We spent 3 nights at Customs House (Fri-Mon) and could not have been better looked after. We arrived at 11.00 am and the staff were happy for us to leave our luggage in the office until the room was ready. The same for our departure day because we flew out at 7.00pm so they had our luggage until the shuttle came in the evening. I am so pleased that we stayed here. We did have slight reservations due to the previous reviews ( re noise ) however I mentioned this when we booked and we were placed on the top floor ( Rm 24 ) with fabulous views of the water docks and park. The room was lovely. Clean & comfortable. Food in the restaurant is FABULOUS as is the staff. The breakfast was any selection from the a la carte menu. It is not surprising that they have won Restaurant of the year. We also dined here one night but should have the whole time because the restaurants we chose weren't as good.
I certainly would go back. It was an absolute BARGAIN at $140.00 including the great breakfast. Try to get that value anywhere else...I don't think so.

Location, Location, Location!

We had a room with a view of the harbour on the top floor. It was a great room and the service was very friendly.

We stayed on a Saturday night and it was a bit noisy but it didnt bother us at all. It might be a consideration though for travellers who want a quiet experience.

The pub downstairs is also great and its a stones throw from the Salamanca Markets.

This is a quirky old hotel near Salamanca Place. The restaurant and bar are quite good, and the rooms are comfortable though unexceptional. The good points are the location -- it's near everything -- and the outstanding staff. They're extremely friendly and each of them went out of their way to help me. The drawback to this place is, as others have noted, the noise: there's live music downstairs in the very popular bar from Wed. to Sat., there's a casino downstairs as well, the rooms which front the street are exposed to morning traffic (including beer deliveries for the bar), and finally, the building is old which means you hear every footstep and voice in the hallways. In fairness though, this is disclosed on the Customs House website, so anyone staying here really shouldn't be surprised. All in all, this was a good place to stay. Hobart's charming and worth a visit.

We stayed one night at the Customs House and found it to be OK and no more. A big disadvantage was the location on a busy corner. There was a lot of general noise outside through to about 2.00am, then in the morning from about 6.00am heavy traffic plus rubbish collection started. All happening right under our window.
I mentioned this to David when we were checking out and he said the late night noise is even worse at the weekend!
