Owner description: Located in North Hobart, the State is a local independent cinema that has entertained generations of Tasmanians for over 100 years. In addition to eight cinema screens, we also have a boutique bookstore, cafe bar and rooftop cinema. Our cinema is licensed, so you can enjoy a glass of wine while enjoying a movie!

Great place if you are after somewhere a little different to watch a movie. Have brunch or afternoon tea before the movie and then grab a wine and take to your seat. Love the roof top movies, bring your own blanket.

I saw a film with a friend of mine at the State. The whole experience went seamlessly. Had a nice drink while watching on a good quality screen and we're provided with good service. Funky little area of Hobart to visit. The hardest part was choosing which film to watch from those on offer.

The State is a gem, an icon. We are fortunate to have it at a short walk from our house. The blend of quirky theatres, the cafe and bar (take a drink into the movie if you like) and the original and added architecture make the State something to cherish.

This small inviting cinema is in vibrant north Hobart and is always busy. Its had a modern extension which works well with the original theatre. Theres even a rooftop cinema for the good summer weather. The added bonus of a great coffee shop allows great catch up either before or after the show. Great movie experience

As a fan of evocative, thought provoking movies I generally check out independent cinemas on my travels. For atmosphere, decor, the snack & drinks menu this is at the top. The numerous cinema screens accommodate a surprising variety of films at any given time. I've yet to enjoy the rooftop experience but will do so when it re-opens later in the year. Hobart is indeed fortunate to have this place (wish we had one in Launceston).
