“Attentive staff and excellent location!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2014

Montgomery sits at a strategic location of Hobart. It's 2 minutes from Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery ( or TMAG) and bus mall, 4 minutes from visitor information centre and woolworth supermarket, 5 minutes from foreshore and the oldest bar in town, Hope & Anchor Tavern, and 10 minutes from the local bar Shamrock and Salamanca Market. You can take advantage of its prime location and walk about the town without wasting much time on transport.

The staff are very hospitable and attentive. Once we inquired information about southern light or aurora and the receptionist was very happy to provide a list of information and updates about aurora in Tasimania. She even printed out 12 pages of information on aurora for us to read. Although we didn't see any aurora in Hobart ( this is purely luck), we were still happy because our wild ideas gained full support from these attentive staff. Without them this journey would be less exciting.

The kitchen is small but it satisfies all the needs. This small kitchen turns out to be a function room when it's time for dinner. In fact the kitchen is the place where we met a lot of guests from other cultural background. And we showed them our cooking skills and chatted over our own travel plans.

There is a TV lounge on the 1st floor but it is rarely utilized by the guests. Maybe because it is very far from the reception and located at a corner. In terms of the bathrooms, you don't have to worry about they are always occupied in the morning or evening because there are plenty of bathrooms on each floor. They are clean, tidy and spacious. A hot water shower can wash away your tiredness and coldness. In each room there is a heater, so the dorm is very warm even in the night.

The only thing that needs improvement is that the quilt is a bit wet. And you may need to wear a pair of ear plugs before sleep just in case the next door is having a party in the mid-night. :( Other than that, this YHA is a great place to stay in Hobart and make friends with same-minded people!

Unessessarly strict on check out time 10am ( room swipe card is electronically canceled. )
Don't rush for the shower at last minute and expect to re enter your dorm room.
left in an embarrassing situation 3 levels up from reception.
No apology & I expect no change to this guest lockout system.

Definitely a good backpackers to stay in Hobart. Close to the city and staff are friendly. If you were staying for a number of days and intended to cook at the hostel, beware that the kitchen is really small.

Room Tip: Take a double power adapter as there aren't enough power-plugs in the rooms for every bed.

Montgomery's is located in a perfect place in Hobart. Close to the sea, close to supermarket and in the centre; perfect to go everywhere and catch the bus or shuttle!
At the first sight it might not be the most beautiful infrastructure, but you quickly realise that is a super clean place and very easy to stay. The rooms have 6 beds and in every isle there is plenty of bathrooms; you will never have to wait for one! Every bathroom has a nice shower with super hot water, toilet and sink. I don't know how many times they clean it but every time I used it was very clean! Also, the rooms have heater as Hobart can get cold.
The kitchen is also very clean, plenty of stuff to use and it feels like if it was the kitchen of my house. I would just suggest a bigger and more powerful extractor hood.
The staff is incredibly nice, helpful and friendly! I spent a few times talking and laughing with them and they helped me with some troubles that I had; very kind!!
If I came back to Hobart I wouldn't doubt and I would come back there for sure! It felt like my home the whole week I spent there, thank you!

I stayed 3 nights, 2 booked by myself, one included in a tour. The first night was very good, comfortable room, cleaned showers, friendly staff. But the kitchen is very small and for a hostel which regularly receives groups over 15 people it is a nightmare. Then, for the last night they made a mistake with my booking and I did not get a 6 female dorm but a 8 mixed dorm and it was very noisy due to a very poor sound insulation.
However, it is very well located, very close to the waterfront, supermarket and city.

I stead in the hostel as part of a tour and staff on for a few extra days to discover Hobart. Beds were comfortable and the location is brilliant. However at 30 dollars a night it is not good value. WiFi is extra and the kitchen is ridiculously small. I stead there 5 days and I never once managed to sit down for breakfast.
The showers were filthy and there never seemed to be it water. Tassie back packers is by far better.
