“Clean and in a good location”
Reviewed 14 February 2011

My wife and I stayed in a double ensuite bedroom using the YHA option. We were pleased to find the room clean and comfortable. The room was kinda small, but we weren't complaining given the price we paid. One major drawback was the lack of an elevator - we had to carry our luggage up a couple of floors, as well as climb those stairs each time we needed to get out. It's not an issue if you are fit (which we were), but I can see it as being a hindrance if mobility is an issue.

Styayed here for a week recently in a family room and the whole place is very clean. External bathrooms with individual toilet/shower and vanity were a great idea for privacy, always avaliable and cleaned daily. Staff were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The only drawback are the creaky floorboards. People walking around in the adjacent rooms to yours will sound like they are in your own room, the walls are paper thin. Cost us about $45 a night so pretty good value.

Initially booking a room for myself with shared bathroom facilities, I was very pleased to have the gentleman (pictured) upgrade my room to an en suite with TV and coffee/tea making facilities at no extra cost.

Very helpful with local knowledge and also, I wasn't charged to have my bag stored (after check out), as I roamed the city for a day.

Highly recommended as an option for those seeking single room elsewhere.

Fantastic location - short walk to the docks/Salamanca. There are two 'parts' to the hostel. One is above the pub and has rooms with shared bathroom facilities. The other is next to the pub with private bathroom facilities. We stayed in both. Rooms and bathrooms were very clean in both instances. If we came back to Hobart, we would definitiely stay there again, however if it was a Friday or Saturday night, we would request a room that is not above the pub as they have karaoke until around midnight which was quite loud. When we booked however, the staff did let us know this and so we were appreciative that we knew what we were in for. Staff were helpful and friendly. The pub-grub downstairs wasn't bad and was a nice little place to watch the cricket in the arvo.

I returned yesterday from a four night stay at this hostel.
As a first time solo vistor to Hobart I found it a great location to be in for exploring the city, by foot or by public transport.

Admittedly it's on a busy street but I found my double room on the first floor looking out to Argyle St was quieter than I expected. For $60 per night ( winter rate) I got a double bed (even better value if shared between 2 people obviously) and basic room with open hanging rack and shelves, heater, chair, sidetable and clock radio. A heater in winter is a must, as it was 2 degrees celsius outside at 7am. Access to brand new bathroom was across the hallway. Best bathrooms I've seen in a hostel. Obviously still very new.

Pluses: clean, great location, very near to art gallery, museum, post office, Salamanca Market, harbour, restaurants, cafes, heritage locations, transport and shopping.Staff very helpful for booking tours and general info. Ability to self cater.

Minuses: above a pub/bar that has somewhat raucous patrons on Friday and Saturday night, tiny communal kitchen with only one set of hotplates and a dingy TV lounge. Access only by stairs, so no good if you can't lug suitcases or backpacks.

  • Liked — Central to everything
  • Disliked — noisy ion some nights

This place advertised itself as superior backpacker accomodation and this is exactly what it is. It does have six private rooms with private ensuite (for those who do not want the dorm experience) located within the hostel itself. I booked myself into one of these over two nights since everywhere else in Hobart was booked out solid due to some car rally from Apr 20 - 23.

The private room may be very good by backpacker standards, but I don't think it makes 3 stars by tourist or business traveller standards. Even though the queen bed was very comfortable and everything was very clean and worked (including old fashion wall heating and wall mounted TV), the room itself was quite compact and did not have any tables or chairs for when you wanted to have people over.

In addition, there were only drop down blinds, not curtains, which failed to block out any street lighting nor retain any heating within the room. While the ensuite was a decent size, the shower stall was very compact and may not fit a..ahem..big person comfortably. Only small packaged soap is provided and ironing facilities available from communal laundry.

Hostel itself is only 3 stories high and located along busy Macquarie St. You do get some street noise coming through all day and night in addition to the sounds of young people coming and going. To be fair, I'd think you experience this at any other establishment in the Hobart CBD attractive to young people and where the rates are cheap.

Reception is NOT 24 hours, but the level of service is good for the kind of establishment it is.

Would I stay again ? Probably not because there is better value to be had elsewhere. I paid a rate of $91 for the two nights and for just $20 or so a night more, you can book a web deal or special with a 4 star tourist/business standard hotel. Just remember to book early and avoid high season if possible.

  • Liked — location in CBD
  • Disliked — no cafe or eating places close by - pub restaurant (Monty's) next to hostel very poor with service
