Owner description: In the heart of Hobart's colourful dock precinct, you will embark on an exclusively Tasmanian wine experience at the Gasworks Cellar Door. With 16 Tasmanian wines always on tasting, a knowledgeable wine expert to guide you through the ever-changing labels, a stylish interior design, and fascinating information about the island's wines and history- this is no ordinary tasting experience. With its sandstone facade and tall brick chimney, it's clear that the Gasworks complex has an industrial past. The cylindrical gasometer tank that once stored coal-gas is gone, but this is the place where coal was burned to generate the gas that lit the streets of Hobart. The Cellar Door itself is located in the original Gasworks head office, where high ceilings, polished Tasmanian oak floors and a sweeping timber staircase reflect the importance of the enterprise from the late 1850s. How it works:- Your guide will introduce each wine in detail, talking about the region, the climate and the winemaking techniques that create each one's special character. To taste your way around the Gasworks Cellar Door, you purchase a tasting card for $10. There are three cards •12 wines (20ml each) •6 wines (40ml each) or, •3 wines (80ml each) The 12-wine card gives you the widest options; while the 3-wines card lets you savour a trio of your choice.

“An informative afternoon”

A lovely place. A fantastic selection of Tasmanian wines. Perhaps they are all here? A informative learning experience and tasting given by the 'au courant' wine expert James Horden. A great way to spend an afternoon. Surprises included the Gurvitztraminer, It matched the finest Alsace variety. Thank you

A wonderful place to sample a broad range of Tasmanian wines. The small building is split into wine regions, and tastings, to be purchased, are available from twelve wineries, at any one time. During my visit, which was conveniently located across the road from my accommodation, I discussed wines with the very knowledgeable James. He provided a potted history of many of the wineries and was more than familiar with Australian wines in general. Wine tasting are bought individually in 25, 50, or 100ml volumes. The 50mls at least gives you a few sips. This is an experience to linger over. Don't rush. Wines can be bought online at reduced prices. The "Cellar" also ships across Australia do you don't have to worry about travel damage.

“A Tasmanian Cellar Door Experince”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2013

What to do on a wet and windy day in Hobart (or any other day really)
A wonderful way to get an introduction to Tasmanian Wine without travelling the Island. Knowledgeable and very helpful staff make this not just a tasting experienc but also a great introduction to the wine regions of Tassie. Great way to plan an Island Visit is to start here and follow the recommendations.

Great place to visit, we had a fantastic knowledgeable assistant James who guided us through the wine regions and varieties. Generous samples, worth the $10 tasting fee and they ship your purchases home. Thank you James, we had a great time!
