“Central location however an awkward layout”
Reviewed 10 January 2014

We spend NYE and the lead up to it at the hotel. Our first impressions it is really tricky to find. When you do find it you may also be disappointed that there are not enough car spots. However on the second night there were got one. The staff were kind enough to advise we can park on the street overnight and we should be able to get one the next day.

We didn't eat at the hotel just slept. Have to say the layout of the hotel is awkward. It is obvious that the checkin is not purpose built. The choice of furniture in the lobby is awful and clashes with everything. The building has been designed poorly and having walked through the charming Hadleys into the apartments it is obvious it lacks the same atmosphere.

The rooms are large and clean. However there are some annoying features which have not been fully thought out. The sensor lights in the bathrooms made a loud noise and the light only stays on for 10 or so seconds. Also the bathrooms are really dark unless you use the heat function in the light mix. So I couldn't see to do my hair or make up. The bed which I assume is king size is actually two beds joined together. Not comfy to feel the ridge during the night.
I would also get rid of those bid wooden doors covering the windows they are not pleasant to look at, although understand they might block out the morning sun. The interior design and fittings have not been carefully chose and appear to be a poor quality.

On the plus side its centrally located right opposite Country road on Collins street, short walk to the piers and Woolworths. Staff are friendly, although you don't really see many of them around. It will be interesting to see what the RACV/RACT do to this place in the future to improve the ambience.

Room Tip: we had room facing collins street it was rather windy of a night

If you can get it cheap through a Wotif or similar booking it is very much worth staying here. There is little better in central Hobart. Large rooms. Washer and dryer in room is great after a few days touring Tas. No views as it is within a block, built onto the back of Hadley's Hotel. It is surprisingly difficult to find! Note that the car park entrance is up a track leading from Victoria Street. The Collins Street entrance is up an alleyway adjacent the restaurant 'Charcoal' (aka 'The Shockingly Small Pizza). Personnel and housekeeping people were delightful. Note - warm (not hot) shower available...

Room Tip: Finding the place is surprisingly difficult. Don't miss the narrow track entrance for car/ motor...

We stayed at this property for four nights and selected it for its great location in the centre of Hobart and also our wish to self-cater during our stay. The apartment was very nice, with spacious bedroom, modern and luxurious bathroom, and large kitchen, dining, lounge area. Unfortunately whilst this is by name a self catering apartment, the facilities for cooking etc are limited. The only fridge is a small bar fridge which is chock a block with mini bar stuff leaving no room for your own food. There are no hotplates or stove top, but there is an electric skillet and one electric convection hotplate, which, not being familiar with this type of hotplate, I found difficult to operate and there were no instructions provided in the portfolio within the room. There is no draining board or dish rack which was a nuisance given we had problems with our dishwasher and could not use it after the first day. In fairness to the hotel, we were offered another apartment and discounted car parking to compensate, which was greatly appreciated. Undercover secure parking is at a cost of $15 per day. All the staff were very helpful and friendly, and the apartment was serviced every day. The rooms are quiet with little noise disruption.

This hotel which I stayed in with my mother and my young daughter is very good but not for the price.
The following are all listed under first world problems and probably with an overindulged reviewer! My caveat.
As we did a wotif booking we had the bonus of a 12 o'clock check out and included buffet breakfast.
Luckily , otherwise at $350 we wouldn't have contemplated staying here.
What clinched it was the central location and as I'd had free parking on my initial visit last year would not need or have to pay for the car parking.
The parking is now charged, $15 per night.
The room which had a separate bedroom area, without a door was really spacious. It's situated deep on an internal block so only the highest floors would enjoy a view.
There is a kitchenette with a dishwasher and a dining table for 4 or 6 chairs to sit at, but only 2 wine glasses. Not very handy if you're having friends meet for a drink prior to going out.
This room, like the last has terrible bathroom lighting and a vanity light that comes on each time you enter. At night the most annoying thing was the FLASHING fire alarm in the bedroom. TV in bedroom, the second so a good feature also had a pilot light which couldn't be turned off.
Bath was great but water barely hot enough to make it worth it.
Furniture modern, well styled but the couches small and so uncomfortably hard.
Despite this if given a room rate less than $200, I'd probably stay as it is convenient if you've a little one with short legs.

This a good hotel in a very central location in the CBD and only 5/10 mins walk to Salamanca/harbour area. We had a king room on the 7th floor, with a balcony. It was a good size, with separate chair, desk, tea/coffee making facilities, mini bar and even a full length mirror. The bathroom was small but fine. Breakfast was next door in a restaurant called charcoal and was good for a buffet breakfast. Gym in hotel is small with only a couple of treadmills and couple of other pieces. Hotel has obviously changed hands recently and did have a slightly strange layout in entrance/reception and they were confused whether we had breakfast included or not, which we clearly did. Overall very good though but perhaps a bit too expensive compared to other similar hotels in Hobart.

We made a fairly late booking and were grateful to get any room for a 6 day stay in Hobart over the New Year period. We were pleasantly surprised with our apartment and the hotel location being a five minute walk to Salamanca and at the edge of the CBD shopping area. However less clunky furniture would make the living room/kitchenette more usable. Our worst gripe was that the bathroom lighting was poor (I put on my make-up by feel!) and the shower was not good despite gaining two heads. The overhead one did not have a good flow & the handheld head was fixed in position, so could only be used if you crouched under it. However, the positives outweighed this negative and all the staff were extremely helpful. Our meal in 'Charcoal' from their new menu was delicious.

Great feedback thank you, we are so pleased that we were able to accommodate your New Year break. Jen we totally agree with you in regards to the soft lighting in the bathroom and are excited to inform that we are about to commence a bathroom upgrade including additional lighting. Hope to welcome you back to Hobart on your next getaway.

Do yourself & your wallet a favour & avoid this place.
Gouging: $1 to be given your room key card! I've never been charged for this, anywhere else in the world. Even worse: $45 for a local phone call to an address 1 mile away! There is no warning at all that local calls are timed, either on the actual room phone or in the room compendium. Do you think the reception clerk would admit this? Not on your life! I got nothing but stone walling (See later).
Rip off: for a very small, supposed twin room with 14cm between the beds, the full rate was $310. With member discount, it was still very expensive. I paid less in London in September for a more spacious room, in the heart of Westminster.
Rudeness & inefficiency: There isn't a parking space for every room, in a hotel owned by a car club! Worse; my 82 y old mother, who was travelling with me, has a disability parking permit. On New Year's Eve we got back to find that some selfish patron had taken the disabled spot. He was not displaying a permit, therefore he was breaking state law. I pointed this out to the male hotel employee who was trying to find spots in the already full car park. He refused to phone the room of the offender, even though the check-in form requires all patrons to provide registration (& mobile) numbers. So, it would have taken no effort to find what room he/she was in. 'I don't want to cause trouble' is what he said to me. So, by his logic, the wrong doer is in the right & the trouble created for a disabled old lady is irrelevant. I wasn't accepting this, so he called a female manager (I suppose) who, when I told her that the disabled spot had been illegally taken, said to me: 'They do that'. If that is the RACT/V's idea of how to speak to patrons, I suggest they get themselves into the real world, or give up any pretence of being in the hotel game.
At check out the next day, I was told we had consumed a chocolate bar & a bottle of spirits from the mini bar. No, we hadn't. I note that another reviewer complains about the same thing, so someone is incompetent in recording mini bar use. I wasn't charged, & so I shouldn't have been. BUT, when I pointed out TWICE that it just might be good 'PR' for the hotel to waive the gobsmacking phone bill, given that they did nothing whatsoever to deal with the parking offender the night before, I was confronted with an incredible farce. The clerk went on & on irrelevantly about call rates, pretended to look for a call chart, went in & out of doors, the works. Again, no idea of what good management & PR mean. In the end, he refused to do anything (which is the default for this place) so I told him that I would never stay 'in this dump again'.
