Owner description: This true replica of the historic huts in Cape Denison - Antarctica - constructed in 1911 by the men of the Australian Antarctic Expedition, led by Dr Douglas Mawson. Constructed by heritage architects and builders, the replica was only made possible by a federal government grant and the generosity of many Tasmanian businesses and individuals who donated time, goods and goodwill. As a part of the Mawson's Huts Foundation, all profits are toward the conservation of the historic huts. Run by staff and volunteer,it is great for individuals and small groups including schools.
Useful Information: Wheelchair access, Activities for older children

A brand-new sight in Hobart (only opened in December 2013). The first part of the museum profiles each member of the expedition. Their stories are unbelievable. The second part is an immaculate reconstruction of the original hut,so you get a feel of what it was really like. A lovely volunteer couple provided lots of additional information. They have travelled to Antarctica on a number of occasions themselves!

This is an exact replica made with the same timber Mawsons original hut was made from. Please take the time to walk around and read all about these men who accompanied Mawson. They accomplished so much and some died in their late 20s in the WW1. There are also actual video footage shown inside the hut and the wind sound effects make it all the more authentic.

This recreation of Mawson's Hut was a good choice on a brisk Hobart winter's day. The staff were happy to share their obvious passion and knowledge of Mawson and the history of the hut with our little group. Out younger members (12 and 14) found enough to keep them interested for about 45 mins while the parents were entranced by the stories of the brave young men who lived and worked in the hut. The dedication to every detail was a highlight.

We went in early June when the southern winds already make Hobart feel like you are surrounded by ice. The museum is right by the water and there is no heating inside on purpose as well as there is the constant soundtrack of arctic winds blowing to add to the atmosphere.
The narratives were excellent, there is a man in the centre room of the hut who can answer any questions you may have left by the time you make it to the room. Although a lot of the information of the expedition is available in the museums being in this hut will give you a true feeling of the size of the area these people shared during their time on the ice.
The visit has definitely gave me a new founded respect for these men!

Mawson's Hut is a very very cozy, replica of Mawson's Hut in Antarctica. But...it's probably not all that interesting to overseas tourists, and a lot of general information about Mawson and Antarctica can be found in the Tasmanian Museum and Gallery. The replica hut though, has detailed info about each of the men and the role on the Mawson station, and gives a real sense of how crowded and cold it must have been for the 18 men living in it. The gallery isn't really practical for wheelchairs - the hallways are narrow, and the amount of reading, while at a reasonable height for wheelchair users, basically just holds everyone else up that's behind - because they can't get past. I enjoyed the experience enough, but for the price ($12), found it a little disappointing.
